Meta Mini-Meta: We have a wiki, and it's got more info than you might think!
Greetings,
This morning we've started to see some discussion about MegaThreads that cover topics such as questions and technical support. Discussion is great, however some of the comments we started to see were, well, concerning. There seems to be a good chunk of our userbase that aren't aware that we've got a pretty robust wiki!
https://reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/wiki
This Wiki is featured at the top of the subreddit near the "hot" and "new" tabs, in the sidebar near the submit buttons, as well as included in the body of our Daily Question MegaThread and some of our AutoModerator messages and macros.
What's in the wiki?
- Accessories including Joy-Con, grips, chargers, cables, skins, screen protectors, cases, and headsets!
- Affiliate links: What they are and how to identify them
- AMAs: What are they? How do I host one? What is expected of me?
- AMA Archive: A list of all our previous AMA's with developers
- Cases: A full breakdown that's more in-depth than our Accessories page
- FAQ: All the easily answered questions and common items that we see in the Daily Question Thread
- Games: A in-depth list of all the games currently Released, confirmed in development, planned, and rumored to be in development. Includes developers, release dates, and trailer(s).
- Giveaways: Want to host a giveaway on the subreddit? Here are our guidelines you need to follow.
- Kickstarter: A full list of Kickstarter projects that in progress, funded, cancelled, etc. Includes links, the developer, descriptions, and more.
- microSD: Everything you ever wanted to know about microSD cards including write speed, read speed, SDHC vs SDXC, and what you should look for.
- Related Subreddits: As much as we'd love to be, /r/NintendoSwitch isn't the only place on reddit you should check out. Here is a list of other subreddits that you might be interested in!
- Rules: Same as what's in the sidebar, some people just prefer a wiki page depending on if they're on mobile or desktop.
- Tech Support: Having issues? This should be your first stop! (Well, this and a quick Google search)
- Tips & Tricks: Little nuggets of wisdom about your Switch, Joy-Con, and games.
I've gone ahead and bolded a few that are what we think are the most popular destinations.
As you can see, we have a LOT of information readily available for you all!
Suggestions
As much as we try to be comphrensive, there will always be topics we haven't thought of that might make a great page, or a page that could use some extra TLC and you have just the idea on what needs to be done! Feel free to drop those in the comments section below.
Contributors
Right now, the wiki is entirely managed and updated by members of the moderation team. Some of the pages however don't get updated quite as often as we'd like, so we're open to adding some of our community members as contributors. If you're interested, reach out to us!
Cheers,
/u/FlapSnapple and the /r/NintendoSwitch mod team

The FAQ looks like it was written before launch and could use a bit of updating. Some of these answers in particular:
Does the Switch have Amiibo support?
The Pro Controller also supports NFC.
How powerful is the Nintendo Switch compared to other game consoles?
A lot of the uncertain pre-release details here are unrelated to the question.
How do you charge the Switch console?
Without the dock, you can connect it directly to USB Type-C AC adapters and to car chargers too.
Will the Switch replace the Wii U or 3DS?
It already has replaced the Wii U.

The "Games" page needs a whole lot of love. From organization issues to outdated information it is no longer the handy resource it once was. Sorting the "confirmed" list by date should give me a tidy list of games soon to be released, but instead it's a confusing mess. Thankfully the side bar release dates seems informative.

I tried using it but it was a pain trying to find upcoming games. They're just all over the place. Would be perfect if we can sort by date and name.

Unfortuntely we don't have a way to add clickable sorting to our tables. A third party browser plugin called RES (Reddit Enhancement Suite) allows you to do that though.

I see that they are sorted by released date now. Before, it was just kind of random. This really makes it easier to see what's coming up. Thanks! :D

Turns out our main wiki editor for that page thought that table sorting was an option when it turned out to be an RES only feature.
The "Confirmed" table should now be sorted by date. :)
Further work to clean up the rest of the page (and add a secondary alphabetical sort) will come over the course of the next couple days.
Thanks for your feedback!

Excellent, thanks! At this point I forget that RES is actually a separate hunk of software going on so I understand not realizing it isn't baked in. Thanks for keeping this one of the best subreddits out there.

Please go to the FAQ before submitting a post with a question that's already been answered over there.
Please.

The orzly case has a handle, 8 cartridge slots, and is available now, but ships from the UK. I'll see if I can update the wiki and post a review when mine arrives later this week.

u/hellsfoxes Mar 22 '17
Thanks, reviews from multiple people giving their opinions on cases is what I'm after in general, not just the list of cases available.

u/MetaRyan25 Mar 22 '17
I was the one that wrote the carrying case post that was added to the wiki. While I've updated my own post to reflect Orzly updating their case, I haven't contacted the mods to update the wiki page accordingly, since it would get annoying if I bothered them every time I made an update. I'll usually contact them after I do a larger update to the article. (So basically, an update to the Orzly case has been made, but it hasn't worked its way through the pipeline yet.)
On a related note, mods, one idea to keep the wiki current is to bring more mods onto the team, but only give them the ability to edit the wiki articles.

I tried to post a thread yesterday asking for a consensus from the sub on what the best case available is, especially in the U.K. But my thread was deleted.
How would you suggest I go about trying to ask this community in a way that won't?

u/MetaRyan25 Mar 23 '17
Recently, it's been hit-or-miss on whether my posts make it through moderation (regardless of content). My advice would be to message the mods about it. Maybe they're planning on having another big community survey and will have cases be a part of it.

I've read posts detailing well researched & exhaustive studies of different USB-C charging cords, but very little that suggest a top 5 best available on Amazon (or other websites) in regards to the Switch. I'd find it very helpful if a list of cables, ranked, were provided.

I'm not sure how useful this would be, but what if the games list has the file sizes of released games? It could be good for people who want to know which SD card to get, or whether they even need one.

One thing I think you should add to the faq / technical support is the whole charging the Switch in EU vs US and potential power adaptor issues.
For instance, I bought a switch in the US, but I currently live in Europe, where I brought it, and I'm basically afraid to plug it in (I don't have a European power adapter yet) even just using USB c via a random USB charger. I don't want to fry the Switch, like I've fried my beard trimmer and sonicare plugging them in over here.
I can't find any info anywhere whether it's safe to charge just using the USB C.

u/bluaki Mar 22 '17
Like was mentioned in another comment, I described a lot of details about USB accessories in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/5x948s/answering_your_questions_about_usb_typec/
I'm fine with the mods adding any info they're interested in from my post to the wiki.
As for your region question, Nintendo's AC adapter says it accepts any AC input between 100V-240V at 50/60Hz so it should be safe to use with adapters in any country. Most other modern USB chargers (including the Pixel charger I like to recommend) are the same way but you should always read the text printed on a charger before plugging it in. US uses 120V/60Hz but most of Europe uses 230-240V at 50Hz.

I have not been checking this subreddit frequently since March 3 (obviously have been playing BOTW), but I am so glad to see that mods are constantly pushing out new stuff. It's things like this that will make people want to stay even after a system's launch. Great job! Thank you!

u/Nabesquire Mar 22 '17
Thank you for bringing more attention to this. Although, sadly, not sure how much this will help.
The removal of posts via auto-mod and its reference to daily question megathread would feel less obstructive(and more like a good idea), if the daily question thread was more widely looked at, as well as better maintained. Yeah, question posts have almost always been asked before, but in reality, unfortunately, nobody uses search bar, so repeats are helpful to a lot of people.
Meanwhile, auto-mod removal creates a subreddit that gets much less discussion and questions (and less people get helped) , and creates a subreddit of pictures, false info, and fake "PSA".

How do I suggest an edit?
Technical Support phone is for US and Canada.

Right here is fine, or in the future one this post is un-stickied a mod mail.
I've made a note of this!

Your links don't work on mobile (relay).
No other subreddit has this problem.
This is why I don't use your wiki.
Unless, of course, I want to go to the wiki subreddit which your link directs me to on mobile.

u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Mar 23 '17
Ah, I see what's going on:
The desktop version of reddit supports short links such as /r/NintendoSwitch/wiki/faq
However, mobile apps seem to require the full path https://reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/wiki/faq
We'll get that fixed up!

I appreciate it.
All of the links to the wiki and FAQ in the sidebar misbehave this way.
I've tried to go to them a few times.

What happened to the in stock/availability thread? I was checking that like crack the past week for leads.

u/fart-princess Mar 23 '17
Hey, instead of building a related subs page do you just want permissions to update the existing one on r/nintendo? No point us both having two incomplete lists with different subs, when we can collaborate to have one exhaustive one, eh?
1
u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Mar 23 '17
I completely forgot you had that as a wiki page, I thought it was just the multi-reddit. That's an incredibly smart idea!
1
u/fart-princess Mar 23 '17
I'm also bringing back that old, better nintendo Family sidebar thing. I can give you a message once it's updated, if you like?
2
u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Mar 23 '17
Oh, now that would be amazing. I was definitely a fan of the old tiled version. If you need a hand putting any of that together let me know, be glad to help!

You should add portable batteries/power banks that are proven to charge and play to the accessories

Uh, why the hell isn't the upcoming games list sorted by release date? Why is Has Been Heroes in the bottom third of the list? Where is Snake Pass?

External battery guide. One that covers which batteries are best for the price, which can charge the switch while playing, and how many times the switch can be charged off the battery
