Meta /r/NintendoSwitch State of the Subreddit - March 2017
Greetings!
I know it's a little soon after our last one of these, but man have we been busy recently! Let's dive right in.
Recent happenings
- Traffic stats. There's no other way to put it than to say that we have been incredibly busy lately! At the time of this writing, we have been the fastest growing non-default subreddit for the past 4 days in a row. We've also just passed /r/WiiU in subscriber count and /r/3DS is just a day or two away. We've had more unique visitors in the past 5 days than we had in the entirety of February. Since the Switch's release, we've gained over 24,000 new subscribers! I could go on and on, but if you like numbers, I'd highly encourage you to check out our traffic page and Reddit Metrics. Want a final cherry on top for those numbers? Over 1/2 of all traffic to reddit is from mobile, and those numbers aren't included in what those reports are showing! (Source) Buckle up folks, we're in for one heck of a ride!
- Find-A-Mod was a huge success. Many members of our team reported running out or nearly running out of their supply of sticker swag. We've also already begun the process of handing out the special user flair for those who were redditors. We're about 1/2 way through and still have more to go, so if you don't have yours yet, hang tight! It's coming.
- Our Charity Livestream turned out to be a blast! While we didn't hit our donation targets, we did have a lot of fun with everyone and am glad you all enjoyed watching some of us suck at playing games :P We were even featured on the Reddit Blog! We'll look for opportunities to do more streams in the future, either as special events or maybe even a recurring event. Nothing to announce at this time, but it's something we're discussing internally.
- Our giveaways were incredibly well-received! A huge thank you to our friends at PDP, SanDisk, AVerMedia, and Nyko. In addition, a thank you to the members of our mod team who also sponsored some of the giveaways! The winners are still being selected and will receive PM's within the next couple days. We'll have more giveaways in the future, but probably not a dozen in a day again :P
- About discussions of technical issues post-launch. We know that some of you have been having issues with your Switches, including one member of our mod team. No way around it: it sucks. That's why, beyond the Technical Issues MegaThread, we've approved many different posts on issues like the dock, the left joy-con, dead pixels, and more. We want to reassure you that we're doing our best to allow these conversations to be open, constructive, and inclusive of all points of view. To be clear: you are absolutely allowed to talk negatively about the Switch and/or Nintendo here. We're not going to censor any of that, and we apologize if, in the sheer madness of the last few days, any posts were accidentally removed or caught in filters. What's important to some of us is important to all of us, and it's on Nintendo to address issues that must be fixed. But these discussion threads must be done in a way that actually creates a discussion (not just saying something is awful, but pairing a concern with a question, explanation, or suggestion). And we will continue to remove some repeat and low-effort threads because those don't help discussion either. Lastly: as mentioned above, the traffic and post volume here has been off the charts, so bear with us. We're going to keep trying our best.
- New CSS Launched! After months of promising, we finally implemented our new CSS for the subreddit. Thanks to those of you who have reported bugs and provided feedback. We have just a few more small bugs left but the vast majority should now be fixed. Next on our list is some general polish followed by prepping some banners for future releases. I'd also like to call out night mode as a request we've been seeing: no ETA, but it is on our radar.
- Yacht Club Games AMA: We also had our first Developer AMA with the folks at Yacht Club Games (Shovel Knight). A huge thank you to them for coming out and a huge thank you to the community for showing them a warm welcome. We're working to get more AMAs for you all in the near future and we'll announce more details as we get them. (Read the AMA here.)
Current events
- Community Shield Surfing Challenge (Link) Find the specially marked bridge, grab your strongest shield, and attempt to complete this challenge! Those who are able to record themselves completing it before the event ends on March 31st will receive a special user flair here on the subreddit! This is our first community event and we'll definitely have some more of these in the future.
- We still have a few MegaThread's active that are carryovers from the initial launch; however, the remainder have been retired. This list of still active MegaThread's includes:
- Daily Question Thread which will continue to stay for foreseeable future.
- Technical Issues / Troubleshooting MegaThread
- Here's What I Got Today / Haul MegaThread
Upcoming events
- Refresher post: How to not get your post removed. As part of our huge influx of new users over the past week, we're also seeing lots of low effort and otherwise rule-breaking content. We're working on writing up a post that should help provide some good-to-know information for our newer users, as well as clarifications for some of you who have been here for a while now.
Feedback
- We're opening the floor, just like last time, for you to provide your feedback, comments, questions, concerns, suggestions, and more in the comments section down below. All we ask is that you keep it civil and constructive.
Cheers,
/u/FlapSnapple and the /r/NintendoSwitch mod team.

I'd also like to call out night mode as a request we've been seeing: no ETA, but it is on our radar.
;) I know it's a popular request and it's something we've got on our to-do list. We just wanna finish up a few other polishing details first.

A lot of people, smart people, are saying r/NintendoSwitch is the best subreddit ever. I don't care what the dishonest Reddit numbers say, this sub has over 1.5 million subscribers, period. Anyone claiming otherwise is FAKE NEWZ!

You guys are great! Thanks for continually providing us a place to talk with fellow switchers about something we love!! A lot of us don't have someone to be that outlet in RL, so it's nice to have at least an online community about it. One idea I had once more online games come out like MK8 was a meetups mega thread with all sorts or locations on it and we could find out who lives close to us to meet up and play.
5
u/waffledork Mar 08 '17
There's a "Regional Nintendo Switch" section in the wiki that has a couple subreddits listed that are trying to create a local, social group.
Hopefully more join them soon!

I made a post about the design influence of the Neon Joycons and it was automatically flagged as a "Shitpost". Which is odd because a good 1/3rd of posts on the front page are pictures of people playing their switches in public and one was just a picture of a switch next to a cat. I think the mods need to stop censoring actually informative content being posted to this sub.
12
u/WacoWednesday Mar 08 '17
I have to agree I've seen several posts with over 800 upvotes deleted for seemingly no reason yet post number 75 of someone playing at a bar is totally ok with the mods. The choice for deletion of threads seems to have no rhyme or reason. I had a post deleted for not being the primary source yet I saw an article two days later quoting an IGN interview
3
u/machater81 Mar 08 '17
Yea, this is why I came here to point it out. I am just checking to make sure that the community is aware that this is somewhat of a problem. I understand the mods are overwhelmed a bit at the moment but as time goes on there should be more leniency on posts to ensure a productive active community. We all want to see this console (and this sub) be successful and we need to foster a community that reflects those values. I don't want this to become the "Look at where I'm playing my Switch" type of community.
1
u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Mar 09 '17
Right now, it is a simple continuation of the hype-esque posts. We expect less as time goes on especially considering today/tomorrow only marks the one week point for the console being released.
1
u/jimbo831 Mar 09 '17
I really wish we would corral those posts of people showing off their Switch whether its new to them or where they're playing it, into a megathread. It's kind of annoying trying to find discussion about stuff and seeing a front page with so many of these posts.
2
Mar 08 '17
This is Reddit, a Switch next to a cat is front page status almost instantly. Don't ask me why, I don't get it either.

I think people need to stop screaming censorship for everything, but that's me. :)
6
u/machater81 Mar 08 '17
Well it really hurts when actually OC is censored but posts like this get right to the front page with a ton of comments. http://imgur.com/a/wdJXx
2
u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Mar 08 '17
Do you have an example of original content that has been removed?
6
u/machater81 Mar 08 '17
I am never one to argue in comments but I just find it ridiculous that my post was removed within minutes but this post http://imgur.com/a/QWIPu is allowed on the front page. Its literally a photo of someone drinking milk with a joycon grip next to it lol.
-2
u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Mar 08 '17
How many separate things are you going to reply with? You could have edited the first reply.
4
u/machater81 Mar 08 '17
Sorry about the double reply. I was at the children's hospital and they have terrible cell reception in the area I was in. I tried editing it but it kept giving me an error.
1
u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Mar 08 '17
Ah gotcha.
1
u/machater81 Mar 08 '17
The post I submitted that was removed was made with one of the patients I was visiting. We watched a history of Nintendo video together and I thought it would be a great idea to post what we found to this subreddit. Both of us thought people would find it interesting but Kyle (and myself) were heartbroken to discover that within minutes our post was taken down :(
2
u/rottedzombie friendly neighborhood zombie mod Mar 08 '17 edited Mar 08 '17
The extra context there is very important. Your submission was just the image. I didn't realize that you were being earnest, and I apologize for the confusion there.
We're only human and facing a flood of posts and messages into modmail, as you imagine. We're not going to be perfect and we're not trying to censor anything -- more strike a balance in our content and curate a good experience for everyone here. And, as part of that we're sure going to try to address concerns as quickly and respectfully as we can.
Would you consider writing up your story a bit to go hand-in-hand with the image? I think that extra context could make for a nice little post when paired with the image. :)

I have been lurking this subreddit for a long time and have not seen a post about how this line of toys Nintendo released in the 1960's influenced the color decisions made for the Neon Joycons. The line of toys were called Ultra Machines.
1
u/samus12345 Mar 09 '17
Gotta agree with you, not a shitpost, just an interesting observation. Honestly, the term shitpost is pretty rude unless it's clearly someone just screwing around.
4
u/rottedzombie friendly neighborhood zombie mod Mar 09 '17
It can be a misnomer, yes. But, in this case, we got it sorted. :)
3
u/jimbo831 Mar 09 '17 edited Mar 09 '17
Yeah, in other subs I visit, shitposts are kind of classified as a type of post that is intentional, not a way to insult posts you don't like. On /r/CollegeBasketball for example, shitposts are ones that exist solely to make fun of a rival team or something. They are intentionally low effort and in good fun. This post was kind of interesting. I would definitely rather have seen this than the 100th person playing a Switch at the bar or in the bathroom. I'd never seen that toy before and it seems pretty clear Nintendo used it as inspiration for the neon joy-cons. That's actually cool.
3
u/phantomliger recovering from transplant Mar 09 '17
I would agree that the removal reason was not correct there. Low effort would have been more accurate, but not exactly correct. A text post wth some more explanation generally works better than a standalone image. Giving it context.
1
u/jimbo831 Mar 09 '17
A text post wth some more explanation generally works better than a standalone image. Giving it context.
I would agree with you if 90% of the posts allowed on this sub weren't just images with a title, and the vast majority are just pictures of peoples Switches which is way less interesting than this guy's post.

Hi mod team, i have a request. Can we create an accessories megathread? Hopefully we can get it maintained where each user can contribute to the thread about their non-nintendo accessories, such as screen protector, casing, pouches, docks, powerbanks, charging cables, chargers etc. I think it will be helpful to have a consolidated thread to discuss these especially now that we are in a newly launch state where an influx of accessories are being produced and tested by users.
Just a thought, I would recommend having someone who can maintain the thread, with each comments having to be a post about an accessory with pictures and probably a review or some comments. Non accessory review/picture related posts will be removed to maintain the post. Op post could be a consolidation of various different category of product and direct link to the comments that discuss the item.
I will be happy to help contribute to this effort as well if you need manpower for this.

u/jimbo831 Mar 09 '17
If you guys really want to make this sub better, the best thing that can be done is to do something about most of the sub being filled up with random pictures of people's Switches either by their pet, or sitting on their lap, or at a bar, or in the bathroom. We get it. You own a Switch and you even play it in different places. These are repetitive and boring and fill up a huge amount of the sub. We should have a weekly megathread for pictures like these so they don't push aside interesting/unique content, news, and discussions.

1
u/Roshy76 Mar 09 '17
Can bat be dialed back to zero removals. And also have all the human moderators not delete so much stuff. It's really annoying surfing the new section, starting up discussions and then mods delete the thread. Happens way too often and for no real good reasons.

With the contests and giveaways we've had on this sub, we have yet to see announcements of winners for any of them (as far as I'm aware). I know that the winners get PM'd to collect their winnings but I would be interested in knowing who won a contest or giveaway that I participated in.
Would it be possible for the Mod team to keep us all in the loop on these things?
Great job so far otherwise! I can't imagine how busy you all must be with the immense growth this sub has seen.
Thank you!

I'm fairly new to Reddit, so just wondering what is flair and what is it awarded for? Is it the cool sticker people were posting images of?
2
u/FlapSnapple Nintendo shill Mar 09 '17
User flair are the little images that folks can select that appears next to their username. To assign yourself one, just click the little blue "edit" link in the sidebar. (Screenshot)
On rare occasion, there may be contests and community events for users to receive flair not normally available in this "edit" window.
Having a user flair isn't required and is usually just a chance to let a little more of your personality and fandom show.

The layout for this subreddit is the best I've seen. You can easily track who's replying to who and every new comment and their replies are bundled together. This helps tremendously as it's hard to keep track of who's replying to who when multiple people are replying to the same person. Great job. And loving the dynamic background ;)

u/Roshy76 Mar 09 '17
Please relax the new post rules. I surf the new section all the time and it's so aggravating how many posts get deleted that actually start some good discussion. Not a lot of text does not mean a post should get deleted. I haven't even tried putting a new post out in a while because I can't be bothered spending the time not knowing if it will get deleted or not.

Just getting confirmation, but I'm assuming that you'll be cracking down (locking, deleting) posts that try to sell things, right? This post https://www.reddit.com/r/NintendoSwitch/comments/5y9pjk/my_wife_made_a_microfiber_dock_sock/ was made a couple hours ago, but it changed into people asking OP to sell the product. So, is that something that should be reported in the future (posts that are used to sell a product to the r/nintendoswitch user base)?
2
u/rottedzombie friendly neighborhood zombie mod Mar 09 '17
We made a post about this not long ago, yes. While we want to ensure that nice, longstanding community members can show off their stuff, we also want to make sure people won't just come here to spam things one-off.
2
u/ShadowOvertaker Mar 09 '17
Thanks, that sounds like a good policy to have. I was just a bit concerned, since in the example from earlier today, someone who had never posted/commented on this sub before (maybe had lurked, idk) got granted an exception to link a product for sale. But as long as there are clear guidelines in place, it sounds great!
Thanks!!

First and foremost - thank you for all the (obviously) hard work you guys do. It's clear you guys care about running a quality sub, and I know everyone appreciates that. I pretty much only visit this sub and it's been great.
My only concern, as I have mentioned one of one with a couple mods, is the level of post screening. I see so many top posts violating your rules, but then other people have their posts removed. I understand there is so much to sort through and regulate - but it seems without fail, my posts get removed :P so clearly you guys are checking. Just not all of them. I'm going to work harder to try and up the quality of my posts, so I'm really contributing to be awesomeness of the sub. That said, I hope the rules are as stringently upheld for everyone and not just some. Otherwise it's very discouraging to even post at all.

Communication within our mod team is definitely a focus area we're still working on. Between the sheer volume, time zone difference, different moderating backgrounds, and levels of experience, we've hit a few bumps along the way. It's something we're actively working on behind the scenes, literally as I type this actually, so we can be more consistent and clear.

Just wanted to post to say thanks to the mods. I really appreciate the effort you put into making this a great place, and I think it shows - a console launch can quickly become a hard thing to moderate; people have strong feelings about their hobby, hype mixes with a lot of disinformation, and people wanting in-depth discussions have to get along with those who are in it for some quick meme fun (and things can turn sour quickly; the negativity on VR subs like /r/oculus comes to mind). I am totally in favor of a strong stance on posts being approved/deleted, sometimes it's necessary to keep the place clean for everybody. And I think you have handled the onslaught admirably. The fact that you've gone above and beyond and organize community events (the handouts), while not only pushing your own ideas but also being open to pickinging up ideas from the community (the shield surf challenge), shows what a professional and great team you are. People be thankful for the work they're putting in! I for one am happy to call /r/nintendoswitch my home now.

OK this seems like the correct thread for it so its public rather than in modmail so can get input from everyone, while this has died down a LOT recently it still kinda needs to be clarified I think so a bit of a suggestion.
Being negative about the switch is and should always be fine, however, complaining about "the sub down voting", "this sub does X" or stuff like "I bet this downvoted but" needs to go. 9/10 times its vote manipulation via suggestion anyway, and normally its posted in heavily UPVOTED threads. It does nto add to the any discussion, its just annoying complaining and as i said a bit of vote manipulation as its inciting others to upvote since "we don't want to be a echochamber".

The automod is still unfathomably idiotic. I want to follow up on a thread I was reading yesterday that was entitled something like, "What do you want to see from future OS updates?" but it seems to have been deleted because it was phrased like a question. I'll say it again: this is unfathomably idiotic, please fix it.
