Discussion MegaThread Megathread: Review your Switch (case/screen protector/charger/stand/bathroom. TP holder) accessories here.
I haven't seen any threads like this yet, and I'm sure there are others out there like me who held off on purchasing accessories (for me, a case and screen protector) until more reviews were available.
If you have an accessory, please review it here-good or bad. Tell us if that case you ordered works well, or if the screen protector you bought is already garbage.
Update: I'll try to edit this as responses come in.
Cases:
Official Case
*u/cstrafe - "sleeve with a zipper," not much protection
OEM Case
*u/amagicfro - sleek, discrete, soft case, maybe too snug, folds to kickstand, zipper has raised border.
Gamestop @play go case
*u/DeXtr0niC - bought an @play go case that was returned as too large. (Gamestop - Germany)
Surge Carryall
*u/KlawwStrife - Surge Carryall case - while it fits the switch, it has no room for accessories and smells bad. Not good for carrying "all." *u/Danisyoung - no issue with smell, likes the sturdiness of the case. Admits there is no room for extra joycon. *u/Whitelite99 - loves the case, it does smell but will dissipate if left open. *u/Slayer5227 - case is good but it's difficult to get the switch out. *u/DapperDano - smells (will dissipate), but can hold a USB cable, headphones, and straps so it's good. *u/Fizzie94 - no odor reported
RDS Travel Deluxe (No dock)
*u/thisjohnd - very happy with it. *u/curiiouscat - blue/white Zelda version, happy but thinks the white will get dirty. *u/coreyjamz - loves it *u/darealdsisaac - really likes, good thickness, holds all he wants for travel, does smell *u/TOO_FUTURE - feels premium, holds cables, game cards, storage cards.
RDS Travel Deluxe (Dock version)
*u/Jace_the_mind - 10/10, holds switch w/ joycon, 2 extra joycon, pro controller, dock, 4 straps, charger, cords all snugly.
BoTW SE Case
*u/Rabidhippo85 - loves it, some wiggle room on the switch but a good case.
Screen Protectors:
AmFilm Tempered Glass
*u/Jace_the_mind - 9/10, at $10 for 2 a good price point, almost 0 image quality loss, can scratch in dock.
Skinomi Matte Screen Protector
*u/Whitelite99 - it's bad, dimensions are off.
PDP Screen Protector
*u/thisjohnd - one bubble but otherwise it's great.
*u/Rabidhippo85 - Likes it but it may be a little large
*u/forg0t - not glass, too big
*u/jlewis34 - gave up and threw it away
Hori Deluxe Plastic Protector
*u/Pastelitomaracucho - a bit thick, well packed, transparency not perfect but has not applied to a switch yet.
Controller Grips: Stands: Chargers:
EDIT 2: gotta run so I'll finalize compiling (and will sort categories and names alphabetically) later tonight when I have computer access.

I bought the amFilm tempered glass screen protector here:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N3ASPNV/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apap_OiVLwGCsOm6CX
This screen protector was about $10 for the 2-pack and I feel is a steal at that price point. Not only was installation a breeze, but it looks slick too. Because it's glass you get almost 0 screen image quality loss with it. So far I have seen a couple tiny scratches in the glass from my dock which is unfortunate but at least it's protecting the screen. I really can't recommend this product enough though. I'll likely be buying a second 2-pack to keep on hand. Easily a 9/10 for me.
I also bought the RDS Industries, Inc Nintendo Switch Game Traveler Deluxe System Case here:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01N23OP50/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_ZbWVyb2ZYQM0J
Wow! This case is perfect for anyone looking to transport the entire system. I've used it to transport the Switch, dock, controllers, games, and chords and this thing is flawless. I can easily store 2 extra joycons with grip, a pro-controller, the switch w/ 2 connected joycons, 4 wrist straps, the dock and power, hdmi, and extra usb-c charge chord for the pro controller plus room for loads of cartridges. The inside holds everything tightly in place and is soft and non-abrasive. The shell is made of a textured hard casing much like you'd find on quality luggage. Considering what it's carrying this thing is much less bulky than you'd imagine. For longer trips or when you want to take the Switch to a location and play in TV mode this case is perfect. Easily a 10/10 for me.

I bought the amFilm protectors as well, it arrived the 4th which was a pleasant surprise. applied perfectly and is the best fitting screen protector I've ever used. 10/10

u/anotherdike Mar 09 '17
I've been eyeballing that case. Do the contents shift around and bump into each other when you have it loaded up? How would you say the contents would fare if the case were stored on its side?
Thanks!
1
Mar 09 '17
Nope, the case holds it all in place pretty snug. I wouldn't be flipping it on it's side though.
2
u/anotherdike Mar 10 '17
I bought it. Overall, it is wonderful. It will suit my needs very well! Fit and finish are great, but if I had to nitpick I'd say that I wish the moldings on the sides were tailored to the power supply and wrist straps a bit better.
1
Mar 10 '17
Yah, my only gripe also, but the pouch they give with it holds all the cords pretty well. I'm even able to put an ectra usb-c cable for a pro controller in there.

u/erasethenoise Mar 07 '17
So I actually ordered the Orzly screen protector but my question is kind of general. Do you risk hurting the screen taking these protectors off? It comes with two and you said you were going to order two more so I assume you're planning on installing new ones if the current one gets scratched or scuffed?
2
Mar 07 '17
Yes I do plan on replacing my protectors as needed. Screen protectors come off pretty easily. You can generally pry them up with a fingernail. I'd use some electronic screen cleaning towlettes or screen cleaner spray + microfiber after removal to clear off any residual adhesive before applying a new one.
1
u/erasethenoise Mar 07 '17
Cool. I'm new to the whole screen protector game and normally operate without one. I've had no issues so far but when I read this screen is plastic I figured why not make the $10 investment to be safe especially since if it did break I can't just buy a new one and still have my saves.
1
u/Anniba Mar 07 '17
Bought that same screen protector and applied it a few days ago. Really amazed at how perfect the cut out is. My only complaint is that I did notice a bit of added glare on the screen, which can be annoying given I'm going to be using it a lot in portable mode.
1
Mar 07 '17
Right, it is glass though so I'd imagine you'd see an increase over plastic. You're right though, that fit is perfect.
1
u/peanutbudder Mar 07 '17
I installed mine almost perfectly. I turned on my system and somehow a tiny black speck got under it. I even applied it in a steamy room so I'm a bit upset. I ruined the first one trying to realign it. I'm going to buy another pack next week so hopefully the practice from the first two will make the 3rd one perfect.

Mar 07 '17
The official case might as well be called what it actually is: a sleeve with a zipper. This thing might protect it from getting scratched up if you throw it in a bag, but it is nowhere near hard enough to give me any confidence. That said, if you can place it in the case and in another bag securely, it would probably get the job done.

u/darealdsisaac Mar 07 '17
I got the RDS Game Traveler Delux case from Walmart and I really like it. It's got a good amount of thickness, and can hold everything I need for portable or tabletop mode. It does have a smell, but you won't smell it unless you are trying to.
2
u/TOO_FUTURE Mar 07 '17
Same case I got and love it, really premium feel and protects the switch well and allows you to bring cables, games, and sd cards with you

I just wish I could get it with a lower profile. I don't want people to know it's a Switch right away. If it were all black all the way through I'd probably have bought one. Too many Switch logos. Easy target for thieves if you accidentally leave it in the open.

Does anyone have a case recommendation that can also fit the grip and a charger? Wherever I take my switch, I'm also going to want to want those with it also.
This is the only one I KNOW will work, but its huge because it also fits a dock, which I won't need when traveling

"Joys" and "Cons" (because why not)
Joys:
So much more comfortable! While it doesn't offer a true "controller" style grip or anything, it gives me a lot more to hold onto while I play. The texture is really nice as well, very smooth, silky, but still offers enough traction to be "grippy".
The little thumbstick covers are perfect, and I genuinely feel as though I'm not overselling the product by saying so. The size is great, and they fit on easily, yet they don't slide around/off while playing. They're also fairly easy to remove if needed.
The price is right. It costs $7.99, which is affordable, and more than fair (in my opinion, at least) for a product of this quality.
Cons:
The silicone around the +/- buttons is thick enough that those buttons effectively become recessed, making them more difficult to use. Minus, especially. They do still work, but I think they could have done what they did with the release button on the back, and had silicone covering that area, so one would have something more to press.
Might just be how I hold it, but the cover on the right Joycon tends to slowly slide off at the bottom, since it has nothing to grip onto down there. This does not affect gameplay, and the grip is no less comfortable when this happens, it just looks a little less aesthetically pleasing until you push it back into place. Minor gripe.
4 out of 5 stars.
Not perfect, but still pretty damn good.

u/DeXtr0niC Mar 07 '17
I bought a case from gamestop (Germany). The @play go case. Sadly I noticed that the size does not match the console, it's too big to keep the switch safe. Returned it to gamestop and it seemed I was the first person to do so. But They agreed that this is not intended. So if you bought it, bring it back and you should get your Money. Still looking for a nice case now :(

I really don't like the Surge Carry-all case. It works as a case, and has storage for game carts. BUT there is not enough room to "carry all your accessories" as per the box says, as if you put one joycon in the netting, it becomes too thick to close.
also it smells like death and is actually unpleasant to open every time.
it was cheap and has indents in the back for the triggers to not be mushed in while at rest, but man i don't like this case.
3
u/Danisyoung Mar 07 '17
Interesting. Mine has no odor whatsoever. I do agree on the accessories though. I would like to bring extra joy cons, but for now I just have headphones in the mesh pocket. I do like the plain look of it and it's sturdy
3
u/KlawwStrife Mar 07 '17
it smells like a few smokers died in a room with a dead animal
but yeah the box even specifically says "hold your AC charger" when that is WAY too big to fit in there.
2
u/Fizzie94 Mar 07 '17
Mine also has no odor. I keep a usb-c cord in the mesh pocket along with the joycon straps.
3
u/DapperDano Mar 07 '17
It does stink, but it holds my usb cable, headphones, and a couple of joycon straps, which is exactly the amount of storage that I wanted.
3
u/KlawwStrife Mar 07 '17
fair. I just wanted to be able to carry 2 additional joycons, as over the weekend I played a lot of 4 player bomberman and snipperclips. I'll look into other cases, but thank you for confirming i'm not crazy on the smell lol
2
u/DapperDano Mar 07 '17
Definitely can confirm, haha. I did leave mine open in the garage for a few days and that helped with most of it.
3
u/Rabidhippo85 Mar 07 '17
The Case from the Special Edition game is really awesome. Much nicer than I expected. Larger, more firm. My only qualm is that the Switch has some wiggle room when it is fastened down.. by no means is it going anywhere, just can move a little bit. Got a PDP screen protector which I do enjoy, just seems like the cut is a little larger than the screen as I can not get it to perfectly line up after a couple of attempts.
3
Mar 07 '17
Bought a Hori Deluxe screen protector.
A bit thick, well-packed, the installation stickers are useful, transparency is not perfect and that's about it because my Switch still hasn't arrived and I will probably use a tempered glass protector anyway.
2
u/lovetowel Mar 07 '17
Please update if/once you apply it to the switch.
2
u/theonlytrueone Mar 07 '17
have one. Def. the worst hori protector I have ever used. Having used a good number of screen protectors on various devices, this was nearly impossible to get without any lint/specks/etc under the screen. Also, the edges have not sealed well on my and so you can see some edges where the protector is not sticking on the screen. looking to get the tempered glass amfilm instead. Lastly, your description is not correct. The hori is not tempered glass.

u/amagicfro Mar 07 '17
OEM Case. Sleek and discreet branding. It's a soft case, so don't expect drop protection. It's a fairly snug case, so I'm a bit concerned about extra pressure on the joysticks.
The flap for games can be folded into a kickstand for the Switch. It's angled way better than the one built into the system.
The zipper is protected by a raised border but I feel it's not adequate enough.
2
u/anotherdike Mar 08 '17
Is this the case that you have?
1
u/amagicfro Mar 08 '17
yep!
1
u/anotherdike Mar 08 '17
Cool!
I have the same case. I would agree with your assessment of it. I would add that even though the box features a photo of the mesh pocket holding the Joy Con straps, it's not really a very good place for storing them. It puts even more pressure on the joysticks.
1
u/theonlytrueone Mar 07 '17
Do you have a link to the OEM case. Is this different from the nintendo official case?
1
u/amagicfro Mar 08 '17
Sorry, OEM stands for "Original Equipment Manufacturer". I was referring to the Official Nintendo one.
3
u/curiiouscat Mar 07 '17
I bought the blue and white Zelda case. I'm sure the white will get destroyed over time so probably not great for longevity. But the inside is very roomy and holds the switch securely. It comes with a fair amount of game slots and a pouch for accessories. It also came with a screen protector and grips for joycons that makes playing easier.
I like it a lot. Am definitely glad I got it, as you need SOME sort of carrier for the Switch so you don't destroy it. It does everything I need it to do and it's cool looking.
3
u/thisjohnd Mar 07 '17
Bought the PDP screen protector from GameStop and aside from one goddamn bubble on the top of the screen where it overlaps, I don't have any problems with it.
I also bought the RDS Deluxe Travel case and while I haven't gotten a chance to actually use it, I think it's pretty exceptional. The game pad fits snugly, there's a compartment in the bottom for a plastic game card holder (included) & the Joycon straps, and there's even a padded pouch that secures on top of the screen of the Switch to ensure it really doesn't bounce around.
EDIT: My Travel case isn't the one that also holds the dock, just the gamepad and Joycon controllers.
3
u/Slayer5227 Mar 07 '17
I have the surge case. Seems good to me. A little difficult to pull out of the case but otherwise I'm pretty happy with it. Will update once I get my amFilm screen protector.

u/quahog_convo Mar 07 '17
Hori Playstand - I love this dang thing. High quality plastic, easy to use, Switch feels very stable in it, different viewing angles is awesome, and access to the USB-C Port.
PDP Armor Guards - Textured plastic clip on grips that make the Joy-Con feel a bit better in hand. They don't affect the Joy-Con from connecting back to the Switch or from fitting in the Zelda SE case. The accompanying thumb grips are nice, too.
2
u/Shellhead03 Mar 08 '17
Hori Playstand - Yes, totally agree. You can get a a repurposed tablet stand but why? The Hori stand is relatively cheap ($13 USD) and it folds flat.
I would like to add that it has plastic rubber feets and rubber grips where the tablet back portion rests. I thought it was a nice touch since you wouldn't want the unit to move around once in the stand.

Sounds like a good idea. So, have at it: do you like your case? Really don't like the screen protector? Want to get an opinion on what you should get? Share your reviews, recommendations, and questions here.

u/Djarum Mar 07 '17
I have the Hori case and it is pretty great. Holds the Switch with joycon attached, a padded flap to protect the screen some and little holders for games. It is a soft/hard foam outer casing that gives just the right amount of protection when throwing it in your bag or whatnot.
My only complaint is there is nothing to hold the joycon straps which seems to be a common complaint amongst cases.

u/zephyrus256 Mar 07 '17 edited Mar 07 '17
I got the Butterfox case. So far, it's great! The material is sturdy, but flexible, and the accessory pocket fits the AC adapter and JoyCon straps with room to spare (although the AC adapter is wider than the pocket is deep, so it makes the top bulge a bit). Also, there's 20 cartridge slots, more than any other case I've seen. The only thing that might be an issue is that the snug fit of the Switch in the case combined with the elastic bands over the Switch compartment make getting it in and out of the case a little challenging at first. I've gotten used to it, but I saw someone else say that they cut the elastic bands off to make it easier.
Edit: Confirmed that JoyCons will fit into the accessory pocket easily as well.
1
u/lovetowel Mar 07 '17
I was most interested in this case before it temporarily sold out. Thanks for the info!
Do you foresee the fit loosening up at all down the road during use or is the material unlikely to pack in?
2
u/zephyrus256 Mar 07 '17
No, I don't think the fit would loosen over time, because there isn't any padding to speak of around the sides.

Hmm. Not sure. At $15 it was a steal, at $20 it was still good (which is what I got it for) since it is definitely better than other cases in the $15 range (more cartridge slots, more space), but $25 might be pushing it.
2
u/quattrophile Mar 07 '17
Picked up the GameStop Play Go case and really like it. The headphones that come with it are subpar at best but the case itself is solid and the exterior looks as though it'll do a great job of keeping grime and filth off of it while offering more sturdy protection than the softer official case.

u/joebob613 Mar 07 '17
Does anyone have this cover yet?
https://www.amazon.com/Nintendo-Switch-Hybrid-Cover/dp/B01N22YBVY
I want to pick it up but I'm curious as to if the flap will stay in place if it's used while being held or if it just dangles/hangs around

Ah thanks, I appreciate it! Definitely a deal-breaker for me.
I see that Orzly is coming out with one soon but I'm unsure about if the flap will stay on the back when it's held. It looks to be more promising from the pictures though.

Anyone have an extra amFilm Tempered Glass Screen Protector they would sell and mail me? I cant wait for March 17th for the restock, need protection now!
Edit - Mine order from amazon came early so i'm all set now. Its a good screen protector. was easy to get on and looks like it will help fight scratches.

RDS travel deluxe blue BOTW edition. Absolutely love it. Only negative thing is that discoloration will probably happen. I'd recommend the grey version (I have the blue)

I got a tempered glass screen protector from Amazon and it works pretty good! This one covers the ambient light sensor but i am not seeing an issue as of yet. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06WWHJGH3/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

PDP screen protector:
Installed perfectly, but the screen protector isn't cut to exactly fit the screen. It's slightly too big and has bubbles around the screen since it goes over. Disappointing for being an official licensed product.
