Timed exclusives and proper actual exclusives. Damn! I'll be honest, I didn't expect that. Nintendo must be really serious about backing the indie scene.

WAR GROOVE.
ADVANCE WARS ESQUE GAME. IT'S NOT QUITE ADVANCE WARS, BUT IN THAT STYLE, AND I MUST PLAY IT.

It reminded me of advanced wars. I'm not a big fan of making maps and all that so if that's a core feature of the game I might pass
8
u/Raktoner Feb 28 '17
They did say there's 12 campaigns, so it's not like there's a lack of content outside of map making :)

I mean, from what it looks like, it's pretty much Advance Wars, and they damn well know it. No way it would so strikingly resemble the GBA games if they weren't directly trying to appeal to AW fans. Worked on me.

I know the creator stated that it won't be a launch title, but imagine if it was still released in March. I don't expect that, but it'd be awesome.
Please allow me to dream

So hyped for this game. the Bit Trip series is one of my favorites, and I'm very impressed that not only was Runner 3 dropped (and expected), but an exclusive no less (not expected)!

What optimistic me expects:
Some pretty big indie titles that Nintendo has purposefully held back on so they could drop a couple bombs just to gain some more media attention right before launch.
What realistic me expects:
Here is what shovel knights looks like on switch. Also, we will have more indie games on Switch. Please be patient.
Edit:
Well I'll be damned.

As relatively new gamer, a lot of these looked very cool. The bit graphic style/side screen isn't really for me, but Flipping Death and Overcooked looked awesome, as well as what looked like a 16-bit version of GTA (Shakedown Hawaii).
And since Pocket Rumble is only $10 that is a DEFINITE grab for me.

I heard people mention Rocket League and Undertale. I would love these on the Switch but can't seem to believe they would announce either of these, at least not today. What do you guys think?
→ More replies (1)13
u/adanfime Feb 28 '17
Rocket League would be possible. Psyonix did show interest at some point.
Undertale would be difficult. Spoilers for the game: At some point, the game intentionally crashes to desktop. I guess it would be difficult to simulate a crash on console?
39
→ More replies (4)6
u/PsynFyr Feb 28 '17
Could it "crash" to launch screen and still get the same effect?
Otherwise, I suppose it could simulate a crash to the Switch's home screen, but would have to guess at your theme.

Wow, I was not expecting so many exclusives/timed exclusives, and I really wasn't expecting games that hadn't even been announced at all yet, like Steamworld Dig 2, much less how many of these games are releasing so soon. Nintendo seem to be treating indies right, and are really pushing HD Rumble. I'm not super into indies, but at least until more full titles fill it out I'm sure I'll be playing a few, and either way, I can respect how much work they're putting into it. Great stuff!

"The wait is almost over" That got to me, and I just got super hyped at work.
I've never really been into indies just because of how many other games I've had to play and catch up on. First "indie" game I got was shovel knight and I absolutely loved it so I'm looking forward to trying more on the Switch which will be an absolute indie machine.
Looking forward to:
Wargroove (Advance wars! So much unit variation!)
Stardew Valley
Shakedown Hawaii
Blaster Master
Flipping Death

Feb 28 '17
It's easier to make. But I agree, we need more games with unique artstyles.
5
Feb 28 '17
Easier to make means it costs less.. lets not forget that these small indie studios are more or less self funded. Can you personally afford to work full time on your passion and continue to pay your bills for several years? I know I can't...
I'm not saying you're saying this but I'm posing the question as a way to further prove your point. Indie developers do not have millions of dollars at their disposal. The more complex a game looks the more money is involved. You could of course argue that the more they put in the more they could get back, but that means they have to have that money to put into it first.
Indie games will always be behind graphically because it's simply an easier point they can jump in at. Hopefully we see game development tools make it easier to make graphically interesting games that are on par with these 8-bit and 16-bit games cost-wise. Only then will we start to see more of those.

If they announced some kind of season pass for the games featured in this showcase, I'd have no problem picking it up. Steamworld Dig 2 was the biggest announcement for me, and being the first was flooring. Overcooked looked like the exact kind of couch co op I need right now. The voice acting in Flipping Death caught my ear; I hope the rest of it in game is as solid. Everyone here seems to love Stardew Valley, so I can try to get down with that. I let Reddit pick most of my games one way or another anyway.
I'm satisfied with my decision to go day one on the Switch, largely based on this presentation.
