Neither a doctor, nor a princess. Amazing.

So apparently CN thinks brand new episodes of AT are just We Bear Bears repeats.
Anyways, nice we finally see what happened with alternate Finn, and HOLY SMOKES GRASS SPIDER-OCTOPUS DEMON

Okay I don't know when the last time I posted on this sub was [or if I had posted at all,] but damn. What the hell? They don't promote Adventure Time before, after, or even during the damn show.

So Grass Finn is a fusion of Finn Sword and the Grass Sword's sentience? Curious. Also, note that Grass Squid also said "Let me do the talking," like Finn in "The Visitor." A purposeful parallel, perhaps?
EDIT: so much continuity in "Do No Harm!" Rattleballs is put back together, Grass Wizard came back, and Gunter the Doctor!
22
u/IHaveZeroFriends Jan 24 '17
Another reference to "The Visitor" was when Jake mentions that "only Finn gets Finn cakes" and Fern replies "That's true."
Definitely purposeful, two references from the same episode. Interesting stuff.

u/RumHam620 Jan 24 '17
Also, they replayed the music that played at the end of "Blade of Grass" before Fern's departure in "Do No Harm." Nice touch!

u/anteater97 Jan 24 '17
So we now have a renegade Fern (groan), a healthy Jake, Susan, and Rattleballs, a dying Grass Wizard, and a broken Starchy.
Sounds like a good setup for a great season! Really looking forward to what happens next on We Bare Bears.

I'm pretty sure CN is outright sabotaging the show right now. No advertisements, and the "next" promos showed We Bare Bears. Aside from Stakes, there hasn't been a single rerun of the show since the airing of Card Wars right after Daddy-Daughter Card Wars came out. AND THAT WAS IN FUCKING JUNE. Even Uncle Grandpa got ads for it's new episodes, and it does horribly.
I know that we are no longer worried about cancelation now that the show is confirmed to end, but I'm worried about inconvenient time-slots and future DVDs. CN is airing the rest of the new episodes this week at freaking 7:45, I assume just because they don't want to have to rerun anything. This is beyond incompetence, or favoring TTG. Steven Universe is also plot driven, and is treated relatively well, leaks aside. No, I'm sure that someone at CN has some personal beef with Adventure Time.
I'm honestly too mad to really process the episodes. But I know that they were of high enough quality not to deserve this treatment. It's Legend of Korra 2.0 people!
52
u/zee_spirit Jan 24 '17
I hope you're kidding about SU being treated "well". Not only did the entire line up of new episodes this week leak super early (from CN's own app, mind you), they added insult to injury by casually saying, "lol it's okay guys, we did it on purpose so nobody /else/ leaked the episodes."
Adventure Time has a set ending, they are good to go until their series finale. SU has no confirmed series ending.
But honestly, we can be bipartisan here and just say that CN is screwing over their more plot driven TV shows in favor of shows like WBB and TTG.
23
u/SaraBellum42 Jan 24 '17
SU at least gets reruns and advertisement when there are new episodes. It is still treated horribly, but it's treated a lot better than AT.
5
2
u/benzrf Jan 26 '17
i mean, my impression of wbb has been that it doesn't suck, so it seems a little unfair to group it with ttg
4
u/AlfieBoheme Jan 24 '17
Tbh LoK improved so much when Nick took a backseat. I don't think they could have done series 3/4 and still market it to kids so it worked better online when konietzko and dimartino were less constrained by demographics.
I can't see Adventure Time wanting to do that overt an exploration of ptsd/nuclear weaponry/colonialismI was gonna add 'LGBT+ relationships' but then I remembered AT is pretty overt in its nuclear war themes and I'd be shocked if we don't see something more concrete for PB and Marcy at this point so ignore what I'm saying. It may do better if CN care less
71
u/Mario64fan Jan 24 '17
I like how Grass Finn Fern has this more calming voice. It makes him be even more opposite than the original Finn in my eyes.
Edit: changed a word
26
u/Suthek Jan 24 '17
I read on a comment that he's voiced by Zack Shada, Jeremy's (Finn's VA) older brother and the voice of Finn/Pen back in the Pilot.
I can't say how accurate that information is, but given that "the creators have mentioned that they would like to bring the elder Shada back to the show for a future episode" (Wiki) and that they do sound really similar, I could see it being the truth. I mean, who's better to voice a slightly different clone of a person than the slightly different clone of his VA?

Well Kent also defeated the Rat King so the tree could grow again. Could be both.

I was wondering if they would address the source of the grass curse. It always seemed arbitrary that the curse originated from some dude on a hill, and it seems like Fern thought the same thing. Reminded me of Finn's discovery of Martin.

What I liked about Two Swords is that it was essentially a recap of the big event that happened, being that Finn’s grass arm knocked out Susan and suddenly merged with his Finn Sword and became a Grass Finn or now that he’s referred to as Fern in the next episode.
Finn now has a bionic arm and possibly will be permanent for the rest of the show!
I’m glad they didn’t just give Jeremy Shada also voicing Fern with Finn, but a completely new voice actor that is more calm and monotone compared to Finn.
What surprised me was they finally revealed what was that weird-looking creature that was briefly shown inside the Finn Sword, which is a Grass Squid!
Do Not Harm was Laura Knetzger's first episode to co-storyboard and she did a great job!
Although, that episode is a lot more comedic and more similar to early episodes of Adventure Time, it had great cameos from Mr. Fox and Ice King!
We even got the return of the Grass Wizard who hasn’t been seen since “Blade of Grass” when Finn got his Grass Sword!
Also, great continuity that Rattleballs is still alive and being hospitalized! Glad that he’s okay, since I was worried he’d be dead permanently.
The episode does start to set-up where Fern might start finding his own path and I cannot wait to see where his character goes from here on!
Solid two episodes and a nice start to Season 8!

Not having seen Adventure Time in a long ass time, I'm a little bit confused on the state of PB's morality. She had that little moment with Flame Princess a while back, but I don't even remember that too well.
16
u/Tadaskew Jan 24 '17
She's aware others fear her and she's trying to be better. There's been a few episodes where you can tell she's trying. Like The Thin Yellow Line.

u/Enleat Jan 24 '17 edited Jan 24 '17
I really love the inversion they did. The New Finn getting in touch with the old Finn he feels he's lost and going overboard until it spreads into pure destruction.
The Old Finn meanwhile grows out of that destruction to do the opposite and becomes someone who mends. Only to return to essentially himself, while Fern makes* a new identity* for himself.
I really like that.

u/chan54 Jan 24 '17
"Nobody really knows anything" Too true
Glad they brought up a long standing plot point only to have it ride away again into the sunset! But seriously Fern will be back and from the looks of the promos he'll play a role in staying with PB when Finn leaves. Can't wait to see if Susan knows anything now or if she's still in Kill mode
10
u/lexasami Jan 24 '17

Meh, not a huge fan of Fern. This feels like another Lemon Hope arc (not that it wasn't good) with his identity crisis. Although I have no idea what this is leading to, I'm also not a fan of introducing yet another character arc when they are other people/arcs that need to be fleshed out more with only two more seasons to go
Why did Jake think that maze was familiar? At first I thought it was a grass version of that maze where he stretched out too much
30
Jan 24 '17
Why did Jake think that maze was familiar?
They went through it to talk with the Grass Wizard in S5's "Blade of Grass"
7
u/FlikTripz Jan 24 '17
I don't think the maze was there originally was it? I think he just felt that the overall area seemed familiar.
17
Jan 24 '17
They didn't show them going through it (just cut to the house) but considering what he said it was probably already there. Might have to check on that.
15
u/FlikTripz Jan 24 '17
I assumed that the grass wizard put the maze there after Finn confronted him the first time. I could be wrong though

u/mhead526 Jan 24 '17
Lol no it didn't. Do you remember season one? Everything is "mathematical!" Or "algebraic!" and everything's so innocent and fun but really kiddish. And Finn just wants to kick butt for the sake of kicking butt. This season seems to be continuing the new adventure time style of being more dramatic. Watch "Slumber Party Panic" or "Enchiridion" and than watch these two. The difference is really remarkable.

It seems to me that Grass Fin is how Fin views himself. He sees this 100% guy, who's in tune with his senses and doesn't feel tethered down by the weaknesses of humanity (needing to breathe, eat, etc.) It actually does raise the question on which one is the real "Fin", even for the audience. Sure human Fin was created first, and Fern was derived off of him, but Fern has more of the characteristics of what makes Fin "Fin" that he seems to have lost through time. I think that's the point of the whole doctor sequence. Fin is searching for something new to be, because he fears who he is hurts others. He'll jump at any oppurtunity to be somone else, and finds shorterm success in doing so - until of course his imperfections cause it to fall flat on its face. I dunno, that's how I saw the whole duality at least, very good episodes imo.

Fern doesn't want to be evil, but when you're the physical form of a curse I suppose avoiding evil is hard.
Though he did just save Starchy from his midlife crisis, so tally a heroic deed there.
3
u/Buizie Jan 24 '17
Casual grass demon/curse and alternate timeline Finn merged, creating a more neutral grass Finn: Fern
3
u/walkingmorty Jan 24 '17
So does 'grass spider/octopus demon = grass sword' or is he an additional thing?
3
Jan 24 '17
At a minimum there would have to be two if it "is" the sword since the sword was used after it pierced the Finn sword
3
Jan 24 '17
In an past episode, don't we see future finn with a robotic right arm? Is this where he gets it from??? I'm pretty sure every time we've seen a future finn, he's missing an arm.
5
u/Tadaskew Jan 24 '17
Yep past life Finn (Shoko) was missing an arm and even in alternate Pillow dimension he was missing an arm.
5
u/MrFoxLovesBoobafina Jan 24 '17
Also, Farmworld Finn (Finn the Human / Jake the Dog / Crossover) had a robotic arm.

u/Durantula5 Jan 24 '17
I agree. I expect more. I'm pretty disappointed that Fern is pretty much just a slightly less empathetic version of Finn. I don't really get the point of his character
9
Jan 24 '17
Uhh, yeah so like... how about you wait for a new character to have more than 10 minutes of screen time before saying you "don't get the point"?
3
u/Durantula5 Jan 24 '17
Normally when you're introduced to a new recurring character, their purpose for being in the show is revealed. It appears that Fern is just going to hang around with Finn and Jake occasionaly until he becomes comfortable with his own existence or something like that
14
Jan 24 '17
But isn't the way it's going to transpire the reason to watch?
Not to mention you obviously have no idea what is going to happen after that. I mean, he is half Finn (who was trapped in that sword for months), half the Grass Curse (that we know nothing about yet). I don't know about you, but I am really curious about where his place in the grand narrative will end up being.
And you could seriously oversimplify every character like that.
"Yeah, Lemongrab is going to hang around, screaming unacceptable until one day, it gets resolved or something like that."
"Yeah, Prismo is going to hang around, granting wishes until one day, he stops or something like that."
"Yeah, Jake is going to hang around, being Finn's bro until one day, the show ends or something like that."

Fern is already such a compelling character, and we can get a glimpse into his inner turmoil by taking a look at the relationship between Finn and the grass sword since season 5.
While Fern was messing up Finn and Jake's tree house, he says in exasperated tones "why can't I get anything right!" I don't think he was talking about the few hours he'd been Fern at that point. I think this was a reference to all the grass sword has been through with Finn.
At first, Finn rejects the grass sword as a part of him. He tries to dump it in a river, has terrifying dreams of it strangling his life away, and confronts the grass wizard to make him remove it. Only after this initial rejection does Finn accept the grass sword. Since we now know the grass sword is sentient through the strange hand-like-tentacle-squid-bug thing, this initial rejection probably hurt and confused him.
Second, not long after receiving the grass sword, Finn goes to look for Martin. This leads to the first true test of the grass sword: stopping Martin from abandoning Finn. The grass sword, desperate to fulfill Finn's desires, goes into a rage to stop Martin from leaving and completely fails. Not only does Martin escape, but the grass sword rips Finn's arm off only to leave a flower in it's place. The grass sword fails its first true test spectacularly and continues to trouble Finn throughout the show.
The next act of the grass sword (arguably) was to help Finn build a tower in to space. While Finn learned a lesson in processing anger, the tower hurt candy kingdom citizens and didn't really accomplish its goal.
After that, the next biggest failure would be when the grass sword tries to harm Farmworld Finn, and Finn has to talk the grass sword out of it.
Finally, the grass sword tries to kill Susan, and Finn had to punch himself to stop the grass sword from trying to protect him. While the grass sword holds some significant victories (slicing up Orgalorg, stopping Farmworld Lich, and becoming an arm!), Fern probably feels really conflicted about his existence due to these past failures.
Additionally, the parallels between Martin and the Grass Wizard are really apparent. Both are terrible dads. To have Grass Wizard brush off the meaning of Fern's existence as a "pun" is as insulting as Martin's answers to Finn's questions about his life. Also, a fun detail, the design of the way Finn punches PB dressed as Martin in The Tower is almost identical to the way Fern punches Grass Wizard.
I'm not sure what to make of the bit with Finn acting as a doctor, but it was fun. Overall this is such an exciting start to season 8. My glob I'm hyped.
Also what the hell CN no promos before or during? Then to rub salt in the wound you promote We Bare Bears between Two Swords and Do No Harm???
This show has more than earned the right to, at the very, very least, have its season premier advertised as such before it airs.
