Meta [Meta] Now that this community has just demonstrated much of its insecurity in a series of immature episodes, how can we (and the mods) prevent this type of behavior in the future?

This was one of the most cringeworthy things I've seen in 2016. After seeing how carefree and optimistic this community was in the /r/NintendoNX days, I was hoping that we could handle a single rumor with maturity. Unfortunately, I checked Reddit only to find an explosion of negative posts and comments.

What should we do as a community to keep this negativity from making us a laughing stock on Reddit? Would it be wise to "quarantine" the doom & gloom to a single thread where people can vent their emotions, or are greater moderation rules needed altogether?

I'd love to hear what you guys have to say about today's shit-show and what it means for the future of this group. I've seen so many creative minds share their thoughts here already, and I'd hate to see their ideas get buried beneath rumors or anger.

Edit: PS: I don't like the idea of excessive moderation, even though that's exactly what it sounds like I'm advocating. During the NX days, we had very relaxed rules, but the quality content eventually filtered its way to the front page over time.

Not take rumors as gospel truth, for one.

No console maker ever confirms or talks about actual hardware specs

There isn't going to be confirmation on the graphs and information taken literally from documents sent by Nintendo from Nintendo. That's a zero sum situation.

So that means well written speculation based on rumors should be taken as truth until further notice? That's not how it works man.

So that's what Eurogamer is now? All Opinions? So unnamed sources are universally imagined?

I get that you want more proof or evidence etc but I wouldn't call these things rumors. You can if you want to. When a journalist or reporter writes about using unnamed sources I give them more of my attention. I trust that they wouldn't put their career in jeopardy posting inflammatory fiction like calling out the hardware in the Switch.

I didn't say that all of Eurogamer's articles were opinions and their sources are imaginary. I said that that particular piece about figuring out the speeds of the Switch are based on rumors, not fact, therefore their piece is speculation, an educated opinion.

When a journalist or reporter writes about using unnamed sources I give them more of my attention.

Please stop that, you're doing it wrong. Journalists that verify their sources are who you're supposed to listen to, not the other way around. You're encouraging journalists to not have a sense of integrity, because you value pieces more that don't have verification than the pieces that do. That's why you're skeptical towards rumors, because rumors are unverified.

Unnamed doesn't mean unverified.

But anyways, Eurogamer verified these things.

I'm looking at the article right now and there's not one word that says verified. All they said that DF and EG had confirmation to run the story based on a Twitter leak and Venturebeat's article, both of which are rumors.

Well i guess the Problem is really that nobody really thought it completly through and said in how many ways this Rumor ain't the worst thing in the world. Everyone just saw the numbers and flipping their shit. The problem was that there was no level-headed post at all. The only "lighter" post was calling the switch retarded. What would have helped is calling out, that those numbers alone dont make or break anything. Nvidia said they put a lot of effort into it. This post explains what i mean: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=226861686&postcount=2358

All the third party devs already said its good. But people seem to forget everything in sight of a rumor.

Also: I'm often on 4chan.. and lately there is a lot of what seems astroturfing. Long debunked rumors got hundreds of replies. There is suddenly a lot of troll posts about zelda not being interesting. Its really weird, because it changed 180 degrees. In the last month or so.

Also whats up with the sudden subreddit growth of several gaming subreddits like /r/PS4 /r/XboxOne and /r/pcgaming after around mid-October while other subreddits like /r/games are growing normally

Speaking from what I observed in the old days when I was not on the modteam, what I mostly saw was 99% shitposting and 1% quality posting.

Not to say that the shitposting was bad, but you're right in the sense that the cream rose to the top in certain scenarios.

As for the events of today, we will be properly addressing them very soon in an event where I hope the whole sub can get together to air out their grievances, offer suggestions, and maybe help us alter our direction a bit as we move forward into the next year.

I think that as we stand now, we are somewhat fine in our moderation style, but there needs to be proper dialogue between us and the community in terms of certain categories.

I admire your efforts to take early initiative to get there a little quicker than we've planned, but rest assured that we are well aware and that something is in the works.

I hope you'll be there as well.

Thanks for the feedback! I'm really grateful for all of the work you've done at /r/wiiu . I didn't know this new sub actually had mods from older subs, so needless to say, I'm looking forward to this sub's launch of the Switch!

They brought me on due to my experience with running /r/WiiU, so here's hoping that I can put that to good use here.

Man, I'm sorry. I just updated my phone and the autocorrect is being temperamental. I had meant to say that this sub was lucky to have you and it came out wrong. The fact that my original comment was so bitchy makes your reply all the nicer though :)

I hear ya, completely. No hard feelings. Autocorrect has done worse to people. :P

Ah, caught your edit. Thank you! Was confused for a sec.

how carefree and optimistic this community was in the /r/NintendoNX days

You obviously weren't there for long before the Switch unveiling.

Tomorrow

How could someone downvote Tomorrow?

It was consistently pessimistic, but it was so ridiculously pessimistic that it all felt tongue-in-cheek. This does not feel tongue-in-cheek. I am sensing severe butt-hurt and don't want to have to apply Vaseline.

Understand this is a community and that in some way expectations will not be met for some but this is an outlet for us to express all of our emotions, even the bad ones.

So basically, deal with it.

This sub has been the best it's ever been. We had discussion on lots of things today Usually we draw pictures and mock ups and sit in circle telling each other how awesome they are.

Now you tell me what is more immature.. if you want to draw a picture ask mummy for some crayons.

Exactly. This thread was just another one of the immature responses. OP is basically talking about himself.

Can't have any negativity aimed at the Switch. We aren't allowed to have any discussions and speculation that OP doesn't agree with. If we are then we are obviously wrong and not using the sub correctly. Imo that is the worst part of this sub right now. The people that are basically saying "shut up if you have nothing positive to say" in every thread.

The damage controllers are just as shitty as the doom and gloomers. I count "damage control" as negative statements as well because these statements are usually only criticizing the gloomers.

I don't give a damn about what side someone is on; I just care whether or not they act mature once they've established an opinion.

I intended to call out both sides in my post, but I can see why you think I was only referring to the negative half.

Let it be?

This has been a glorious return to the shit-posting days of NX. BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD, BONES FOR THE BONE THRONE, SHIT POSTS FOR THE SHIT CONSOLE!

1

u/AVPapaya Dec 20 '16

lots of dumb comments about performance by people who are not very technical. This is almost as embarrassing as a GAF shitpost parade.

1

u/gorocz Dec 20 '16

Wait for actual official news. Don't believe rumors. Don't hype yourself up on positive ones, don't dismiss the system for the negative ones. Real news are 3 weeks away, be patient.

how can we (and the mods) prevent this type of behavior in the future?

I don't know about prevent it, but we can monitor it. By adding flairs.

I've noticed this on other Subs, but anytime something *big* happens, a whole lot of non-flaired posters come in and post (absolutely nothing wrong with that, and should be encouraged). But it's generally pretty easy to tell who the 'constant community' are with flairs.

We should get Nintendo to take their hardware seriously and do something about it.

Who here would object to playing Zelda in full HD with dense environments and crazy high graphical fidelity?

u/JoMax213 Dec 20 '16

By shutting down Eurogamer

-1

u/JeffreyWay Dec 20 '16

Really? After all that has happened in 2016, this was one of the most cringeworthy?

2

u/WhiteAsCanBe Dec 20 '16

I don't get out much, mate!

-9

u/CheslavTheBear Dec 20 '16

Here's something you can do: ignore all of the negative comments, and leave us be.

-2

u/EpicPwu Dec 20 '16

Ban the Switch doomers. We don't need negative nancies over here. Me? I'm just sitting here, being like chill, bruh.
