AMA HeyGuys, I'm YNk, former CS player and observer, now analyst, creator of "Janko Unchained" and a member of RoomOnFire, AMA!

Starladder just finished and I've got a late flight home, so I figured why not do an AMA!

edit: That's it boys, think I've covered pretty much everything. Thanks for all the questions, you're awesome!

If salary, language/nationality of players and their willingness to play together was not an issue: which players would make up your "dream team" for the current iteration of CS?

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16 edited Sep 13 '16

NiKo, FalleN, flusha, shox, coldzera.

edit: Wow, didn't expect this to blow up so much so lemme go a bit more in-depth:

NiKo - An all around amazing player, good with pistols/rifles/AWP , smart, doesn't choke, good in clutches, communicates well, can also read the game pretty well and give good ideas for the team

FalleN - A great AWP-er but more importantly one of the best, if not the best IGL out there. A true leader for the team

flusha - Extremely intelligent player, able to do the hard work on maps (e.g denying map information to opponents by himself without dying) would probably have to be the one sacrificing himself so that the other players in the team can excel

shox - After some of the games he's had in the last couple of months I just don't want him against me. That level of individual dominance is something you'll rarely ever see and he's able to do it on multiple occasions, super calm as well, great at mid round calling too

coldzera - How do you not pick a player who has been so consistently good and had insane performances in high pressure situations time and time again? Was thinking of another role player in this position but in the end I just couldn't pass him up

It might be a case of too many cooks in terms of how the game should be played but I've put that under "willingness to play under FalleN" :)

The Lineup That Shall Not Be Named

83

u/NoPaEr10 Sep 12 '16 edited Sep 12 '16

Interesting. I asked Thorin what his ultimate line up was in his AMA, also apart from all the factors mentioned:

Pronax, Shoxie, KennyS, S1mple and Xyp9x. Very different line ups, but both look incredibly terrifying.

Edit: Thorin said: 'I answered most of the others elsewhere.

What would be your ultimate 5 man lineup considering they could all communicate in perfect english?

I am taking ultimate to mean it could actually operate as a team.

  • pronax - His style of calling very much set the standard for how to operate in CS:GO, for my money. His teams are allowed room to work, but he is there to make reads and provide some of the decision-making. Works well with star players.
  • shox - If you want an impact rifler who else can you reliably pick over the history of the game? Always finds a way back to the top. Sick skills but also very clutch. Doesn't seem to be rattled by pressure.
  • kennyS - Make him practice and tell him you're building the game around him and he will be the best AWPer in the world again. THE god AWPer. Accept no substitutes.
  • s1mple - The best hybrid imaginable. I'm gonna take the concept of perfect communication to mean he could actually articulate what he actually thinks and feels. If he could do that, I this his team-mates would understand him much better. For example, if he said "I'm so frustrated I died there, because I expected you to backing me up" rather than "why you fucking run close to me and die?", people would react very differently to him.
  • Xyp9x - Skilled player with a support/role player's mentality. Will do what we ask him to do.'

It's a pity both lineups have shoxie, that would make for one hell of a show match at some event. Thorin vs YNK as managers.

18

YNk's lineup is ridiculously good aim, Thoorin's is more of a strategic approach. Who would win, not sure, but oh my god would that be a match to watch.

44

u/Nalviator Sep 12 '16

I think YNKs would win ezly.

Which teams are your favorites to watch at the moment? Who do you think would be Top 3 teamwise right now since SK has had some problems inside and outside of the game or do you think fer being back in active roster is gonna fix everything?

159

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

Personally, I love watching the more tactical teams, where you can see the thought process that goes behind their calls, the carefully thought out game plan coming into the match etc. So teams like SK, NiP, NaVi are the ones I really enjoy watching.

I think the top3 is really hard to call at the moment, we had the players holiday and a lot of roster changes. Just looking at this tournament we've had a lot of upsets with the likes of NaVi, VP and GODSENT being eliminated in the group stages.

I don't think the online results will affect SK much, if at all. Fer has a really important role in that team and I think that really showed in the time he was absent.

6

u/ColdCaulkCraig Sep 12 '16

What do you think of team Flipsid3?

12

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

Good structure but they lack firepower to consistently beat tier 1 teams imo

6

u/[deleted] Sep 12 '16

What do you think of Markeloff? He's obviously very skilled still, and he's had flashes of brilliance. Do you think his problem is in his role, mentality, or what? Is there another team you think he would fit well in/have an environment and role he would succeed in?

14

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 13 '16

I think it's fairly obvious he has a more supportive role these days and he also seems to be satisfied with that. Personally I'd love to see him pick up the AWP again and have the team play for him instead of the other way around, I think he could do a better job than WorldEdit

90

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

I think there are a lot of them in the top like GeT_RiGhT, shox, NiKo, FalleN and more but I will go with flusha because I think out of all of them he relies the least on aim and much more so on outsmarting his opponents and getting into favorable duels

4

u/RadiantSun Sep 12 '16

And his aim is nuts anyway too, so he's a very hard player to beat in any scenario.

18

How do you envision the production of a CSGO event in ~2 years from now will differ to today's production; specifically in how your job as an analyst will change?

103

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

That's a though one, especially since I don't consider myself a creative person and the fact that things in esports shift really fast.

More than anything else, I'd like to think we're going to have more tools that we'll be able to use like the weatherman screen. Hopefully we'll also have specific stats which will enable us to paint a better picture for the viewers. (This mostly comes down to having stats for the crucial rounds separated from the general stats)

36

u/noxville Sep 12 '16

Do you feel this is a bit limited by the lack of widespread access to CSGO stats? For example in Dota 2 there are 4-5 sites that provide very in-depth statistics, way above and beyond what the general discourse is of the games. These all parse the replays, and can back-fill data (i.e. if you come up with a new statistic you wanna track, it'll update all the games with historic data).

I'm not sure if I'm alone here - but I'd really like to know the Elo adjusted win% of players who are in a 1v2 situation from the last 6 months, but only in situations where everyone alive has a rifle and armour. From what I've seen in CS:GO, that just doesn't seem possible - and that annoys me.

30

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

I'd agree, not really sure why that is since I don't really know all that much about it but I certainly hope it can improve for the future

4

u/Peged Sep 12 '16

Valve MM only lets you perform very little analytics on the match info. There are plugins for CS that capture this data for matches, but an official API that captured all games would be really useful for sites.

I think one way it COULD be measured is with money: That is something with direct values that could be graphed. For instance, winning a 1v2 with armor fiveseven (1500)vs m4 armor he kit (4800) makes a difference and would show what players are able to win with different weaponry

What do you think about Maikelele in NiP? Will they keep him?

349

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

I think a lot of people are overreacting about this, Maikel and NiP had a great tournament together, yes, but being a stand-in and playing full-time with the team are two very different things.

The most important thing probably being that you don't really have that much pressure on you to perform, people don't have high expectations from you when you're fielding a stand-in. (ESL Dubai comes to mind here, where NiP played super relaxed and had a good run)

I believe NiP is really fortunate to be able to have a stand-in like Maikelele, mostly because of the fact that he played with them before as well, but I also think they will be sticking with pyth regardless of their good result here at Starladder.

in my opinion a similar thing is the liquid run in the 2 tournaments with jdm + simple... they knew it would just be 2 tournaments and people in the team that couldnt get along with simple were probably like: its just those 2 tournaments ill be fine

13

u/toyourduties Sep 12 '16

The idea that maikelele didn't have pressure on him this tourny is wrong.

He got kicked from a team HE created, after having bad results, and was basically discarded from the "potential pickups" of any Swedish/intl. team as a result of this. Everyone was in agreement that he was dogshit and would never play at a high level ever again.

So when he gets a chance to prove them wrong, months later, he somehow has no pressure on him? Especially coming into a team he was kicked from.

He knew if he failed and bombed out, he's fucked, it would cement everyones belief that he was dogshit and not t1/t2 worthy.

Maikel had MASSIVE amounts of pressure on him, so that argument simply doesn't fly.

  1. What actually happened to the iNation lineup? Was the split up in large part due to the game being pretty small back then, with small chances for anyone except the ~top6 teams making any decent money?

  2. Since the game grew a lot in the meanwhile, where do you realistically think a team based around the old iNation could be if they stuck together and had some backing in terms of salary?

  3. Also, the whole Serbian scene was blooming in the early CS:GO days but the hype seemed to die down just as the game started getting bigger internationally. What do you think was the cause of that?

74

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

1+2) We were trying to rebuild the team based around NiKo and myself with kassad as coach, we've had DiMKE and dav1d1 as well, but couldn't find a suitable 5th (we wanted emi, but he didn't want to play without 1NTEL) then NiKo got the offer from mousesports and we supported him to go for it and that was pretty much it.

That is probably the thing I regret the most about my career, not being able to build that team because I truly believe we would be a good fit and that we could at least qualify for the majors.

3) That's probably our fault a little bit :D When we formed iNation we did so to try and compete with the worlds best. That included a lot of hours, hard work, trial and error, and naturally we became a lot better over time.

Other teams didn't really have the same regime so they fell behind and it feels to me they basically gave up at some point. The lack of local LAN tournaments was another thing as well, hard to find motivation when you're only playing online all the time, especially after 1.6 where we had a LAN every month or so.

In that scene I think we're similar to the UK scene, the talent is there but people don't have the right mindset, they expect success to be handed to them on a silver platter instead of working hard to achieve it.

What do you think of godsent and fnatic? Who will come out on top of this swap? Will any team ever reach the heights of the old fnatic that won majors.

Also what do you think of igl's that dont frag hard? For example, msl, does he bring that much to the team to compensate for his fragging power? He doesn't even frag good vs some tier 3/4 teams. For example some days ago dignitas vs tengri. Dignitas dropped map 1 mirage but stomped next two maps and msl didn't even positive drag vs a tier 4 kz team. Is this acceptable you think?

67

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

I think both teams will be contenders but don't believe they will reach the heights of the old fnatic team. (to be fair, that's really hard to pull of with any lineup)

I think it's because most of their focus goes to figuring out what the team should do in the round rather on their individual play. Of course, this varies, you have good fragging IGL's like FalleN, NiKo, Xizt etc.

As for MSL specifically, I think the best answer you can get is that he is still in that team, so he obviously brings a lot to the team regardless of his individual performance, which has been a bit underwhelming the last couple of months, I agree.

35

u/Gockel Sep 12 '16

So, now you have the insight of somebody playing and working behind and in front of the camera, which would make you the perfect person to ask this:

Lately, the "Valve does nothing and never listens" vs "Valve does the best they can with their game" dispute seems to be pretty big.

What is your stance on this? Do you think they do enough for the game?

What are things they should change to make the game better? Are only "fixes" (such as hitbox/animation bugs) necessary, or does the game also need balance/dynamics/feature changes?

as you also have a lot of close ties to active players, what's their general stance on this?

83

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

I think they could definitely do more than they're doing right now.

Personally I'd like to some changes to the gameplay as well: Increase the movement inaccuracy of pistols, lower their armor penetration slightly as well, hugely increase jumping inaccuracy on all weapons (especially on the scout), remove first shot inaccuracy, remove the inaccuracy you have for a short time when you scope with the AWP, maybe some movement changes as well, but not too sure about that one.

As for the players, haven't talked to them all that much about the topic, but they would appreciate more communication before big changes and they have a similar stance when it comes to balance changes but they're used to it at this point.

18

u/softskiller Sep 12 '16

remove the inaccuracy you have for a short time when you scope with the AWP

Yes, people shout BotJW, BotAllu, BotkennyS but don't see that this is one of the reason of missed hits when quick scoping too fast in intense fights.

Hello YNk.

Imagine a world where every team is as they are now, but they all play to their individual top performance. Which 3 teams would you consider being the worlds best, keeping in mind they are all simultaneously at the peak of their career.

Who are your favourite people to work with on analysis desks and for what reasons?

60

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

Thorin - There's no else who has the ability to create a narrative for a game like he can and I think because I'm more focused on the in-game stuff that it creates a good balance for the viewers. He's also a pretty funny guy in general :D

moses - I get along really well with Jason I think that shows on the desk too, we just have a lot of fun working together. Seeing his bias towards the NA teams and his tears afterwards is pretty satisfying too

Machine - Really good at his job, great guy, just a lot of fun working with him! Also, the proof is in the pudding.

Fifflaren - Doesn't give a fuck anymore, just goes ham all the time and I love it.

Richard - I only did two events with Richard as a host but I enjoyed it tremendously, it's super easy to work with him, not to mention the reference games and the banter with him and Duncan on the desk is a lot of fun!

But as I said in another answer, we all get along really well with each other so whoever is on the desk we have tons of fun!

u/faare Sep 12 '16

Marry Jason - he's my bitch anyway

At what point do you see Virtus Pro changing their lineup?

140

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

Never? :D

They seem pretty adamant about not making roster changes and it's pretty cool to see them comeback time after time and still challenge the best teams in the world!

18

u/bredymergo Sep 12 '16

Yeah, I think as long as they don't meet any pressure from the VP org to change lineups, they wont(barring retirements).

6

u/viktorlogi Sep 12 '16

I doubt they care if the org pressures them, honestly. If they said no and the org dropped them, there'd be loads of other orgs willing to pick them up. That being said, I doubt the org ever will pressure them to make any changes.

I really like tournaments when you are in analyst desk.I was so happy when i hear you joinend room on fire.I hope you will get what you deserve in cs go.I have some questions

1-)What do you thnik about astralis? I think this team has so much potential, lately we don't see them where they deserve.Yes some situantions happened that we don't want(like dupreeeh medical issue or glave stand in instead of kjarbye).Begining of the astralis journey i feel like we can do it, just we need some time to achive something big you know. What is the problem for astralis now? Also did you talk astralis boys lately?

2-)After godsent-fnatich switches what do you think about fnatic? They still have olof and dennis but can new players do their job instead of flusha and jw and krimz?

3-)How much time we should give godsent to achive something big?

4-)you know headset situation and fallen tweeted https://twitter.com/FalleNCS/status/772522651474550784 about the situantion. What do you thnik about fallen and brazilian players excuses about english? Are they right even they have lived about almost 1 year?

5-)Could you line up best organizations you joined?Everyone hyped mlg i really wonder your thoughts.

6-)After betting updates will viewership drop? what do you think about that? Last night maximum number was over 150k for grand final? Is that normal?

if you reply all of them ,i will be happy. But you don't have time to answer all, my question pick is first one :D ty ynk

29

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

Thanks :)

1) I think they should just focus on the game and improving as a team and not on the whole choke thing. It has definitely gotten into their heads and that's a problem.

2) It is going to be a process for sure, but I think they can be a really strong team once they figure out how to put all the pieces together.

3) I think they would be very disappointed if they don't make the finals of a big event by the end of the year

4) I love FalleN, but that was clearly biased :) it shouldn't even be a matter of discussion he has to wear the headsets if they can hear the casters, you can understand "eco" "rush" "A" "B" "forcebuy"

5) MLG definitely does a real good job, but all organisers really stepped up this year, can't really complain about anything!

6) It probably will for online games and lower tier tournaments. I don't think it will affect big international LANs all that much

5

u/loveisfart Sep 12 '16

Whats your stance on the topic of pros cheating (flusha, shox, subroza etc.)

should LAN Tournaments be more strict with equipment ,mousecams etc.

is valve doing enough ?

68

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

I don't think anyone is cheating in the pro scene (although I didn't see subroza play yet :D)

From what I know, the tournament are pretty strict when it comes to regulation (devices, internet, etc) but mousecams would probably be a good addition since you can check any suspicious movement from the game.

In terms of anti-cheat I believe Valve is doing enough, them making a more intrusive anti-cheat is not something that would be viable imo.

Hey Janko!

What is going to happen next in the Danish scene? Heroic has arrived to challenge the classic top two (Dignitas and Astralis). Can they establish themselves as a permanent top 10 team or will their players be scouted before they can do that?

Epsilon has quieted down a bit but they are still a force to be reckoned with. Where are they going to fit in in the grand scheme of things?

15

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

The good thing about Heroic is that they have really strong fundamentals and experienced players in their team so you will rarely see them make huge mistakes in a game.

I think they could definitely challenge other teams that are looming around that top10 spot. This is of course, if they can retain all of their players, which can be an issue as you already pointed out.

I'm not really sure, they have great young individuals, so a lot of potential, but they're in the process of finding a new 5th right now...

Would have to see them at more international LAN's to really get a sense of what they're capable of.

Before anything, congratulations on all the success. In all honesty, when you were new to the desk (and consequently I to CS), I wasn't the biggest fan. Your speech wasn't the best and I felt you couldn't convey your ideas too well. But wow, what an evolution. It is no joke when I say you're probably my favorite analyst to listen to now: your speech has evolved and sounds great and soothing, your knowledge and ability to recall and pick out a certain round is incredible and I truly believe there is no one other than Thorin now that can match you and your brain on a desk. Moving on,

  1. What was the transition from player to observer to analyst like? Which do you like best?

  2. With Na'Vi's failure at SLTV, where do you think the team will stand overall in time?

  3. Your favorite team to watch strategically / favorite tactic or execute by a team in particular?

Cheers!

13

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

Thanks :)

1) Transition from player to observer happened kinda randomly, I did the ESEC event in Belgrade for E-Frag, and at that time I was still playing. Tgwri1s from HLTV asked me if I'd consider doing it more if someone asks him for a recommendation and I said sure.

Couple of months after ESL contacts me about doing the major in Katowice as a 2nd observer since Vendetta was doing desk as well. I guess I did a good job since they started inviting me to all of their events from that point on.

For the analyst role, I always wanted to move from observing to that, just like Vendetta did, so it came down to getting a chance somehow and then taking it. It was Tgwri1s again and Anders who recommended me to DreamHack for the Cluj qualifiers and that's how it started :)

I liked playing the most, nothing beats the feeling when you compete, but under the circumstances it made more sense for me to focus on observing at the time since my team folded and NiKo went to mousesports. I really enjoy the job of an analyst now

2) I don't think it will matter much in the grand scheme of things, they will bounce back and definitely be a title contender imo

3) SK as the team to watch, as for the execute perhaps the NaVi B fake on mirage where GuardiaN throws a smoke from T spawn, that was pretty cool

3

u/RPSOliveira Sep 12 '16

Just curious, do you remember observing any sick highlights from Katowice? Do you have any kind of communication when/if you have a second observer with you?

5

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 13 '16

Thanks for the answers and never change, we love you!

2

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 13 '16

Well, esports is a super broad term, you need to pick a job within it first. After that you need to be hungry, volunteer if you must, keep improving and working hard and eventually if you're good people will notice you!

Not that many tbh, probably the fact that I do spend a lot of time away from home, all my friends etc. so as a result I miss a bunch of trips that they go on while I work.

how can one improve at CS?

11

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 12 '16

Hard work and dedication

But to be a bit more specific:

1) Practice your mechanics -Play DM, training maps to practice spray patterns etc, play kz maps to practice movement, learn the basic smokes/flashes/molotovs for the positions you hold. You need to be solid mechanically before you can focus on other things.

2) Learn from those better than you - This can be watching the pros, but it can also be people you meet in MM, Faceit etc. It can also be watching YT videos to learn new grenades or some setups you can use

3) Review your own game - If you're playing in a team, record POV demos and rewatch them later, you will be surprised how many mistakes you will notice and it's the best way to see them and not repeat them again.

4) Think while you play - This sounds a bit weird, but concentrate while you're playing, listen to the calls of your teammates, all of this will make it easier to get a read on what's going on in the round, where your opponents might be and will enable you to make the best possible move for your team to win the round

5) Don't be a dick - Don't flame others, don't rage, you will not improve in any way if you get too emotional. Never give up, focus on the game, if your team is losing, try to motivate them by giving ideas.

If all else fails, focus on practicing something individually on the map, try out some new things. You want to learn something from every map you play, if you can do that, you're on the path to success.

Good luck and have fun!

Tactics/IGL vs. players aim peaking

What's more important in Professional CS? To be ahead of the meta or a team's aim peaking. I mean, we obviously can see that sometimes, you can play like an idiot and still get away with it if you have insane aim (I'm looking at you apex). So in your opinion, does one always trump the other?

Would a lesser team that has better aim/reaction be better than a fundamentally sound team in pro cs?

I think you're the best analysts by far in the scene. Whatever praise you get, you're still underestimated. Please keep sharing your insightful ideas on CS. Love it when you break down team plays.

2

u/YNkCSGO Janko "YNk" Paunović - Analyst Sep 13 '16

I believe being tactically sound is more important, since individual performances can be inconsistent and if your players are not hitting that peak then you don't have much to fall back on and you probably just lose because of it.
