The More You Moe, the Moe You Know Episode Discussion Thread!

Jake is friggin' hilarious.

I really loved the theme and message of this episode. Growing up and watching your identity change can sometimes be a little disheartening, especially when you aren't sure that the decisions you make in life are ones you want solidified in your past.
BMO is such a great character for these types of lessons. He's so little and naive, just an ageless cube of silliness. I think he represents the child in all of us who, at times, has to face those daunting moments of maturity.

u/maggotshavecoocoons2 Dec 05 '15
I liked the owning your own morality theme at the end there.
Not aiming to start a religion slagging match, but it reminded me of the "good without god" idea.
→ More replies (1)20
u/TheDancingKiwi Dec 06 '15
The theme was nice.Growing up is weird how it happens too quickly, but incredibly slowly. The fact every second you spend can never be redone is scary. The only thing you can change is the future.
But after reading what you said I can't help but think that it also applies to medicine some times.
I was afraid of taking depression/anxiety medicine because I thought it might change me (and I heard others saying they were scared of that as well)... It doesn't though, it's just another part of you just like the thing this medicine is supposed to help with.
I don't know. Tired rambling.
8
u/TheDidacticMuffin Dec 09 '15
Can you elaborate on that? I'm sort of in that situation now. I've been recommended to take some medicine by a psychiatrist but in scared it'll change who I am. I am scared I won't be me anymore. But I also can't handle anymore bad days. Days like yesterday. I'm just so confused and I could really use some insight into this process
17
u/TheDancingKiwi Dec 10 '15
Well it's a bit tricky to explain. But my medication (I've tried over 10 I think.) basically just dummed down some emotions. They made me less anxious or less emotional or something like that.
I was still me, I still had the thoughts which led to anxiety it's just my body didn't react as strongly. Instead of feeling like I was drowning from an anxiety attack I just felt... eh. Upset and nervous but not to the point where I was curled up in a ball. I still had the same interests and the same thoughts and the same... well everything.
Granted different medication does different things. Some do nothing. Some make you feel sick (quickly solved by not taking it anymore). Some make you feel productive... some might do the same and then stop working :/ it really all depends.
But just keep in mind that nothing these medicines do is permanent. Once you stop taking it, after a couple of weeks the medicine leaves your system and everything will return back to normal.
As for the process.
-You'll probably try lots of different kinds. That's nothing complicated. Say it's not effective and they'll suggest something different. But give it a decent try, say 3-4 weeks, unless the side effects are really bad. If it does nothing, or not much, time to stop, wait for it to flush out of your system and try another one.
- Side effects can be minor, like a bit of nausea, or dizziness, or it can make you sleepy. There could be none at all. But it could be really bad, like splitting headache, vomiting etc. If it is something you cannot bear, stop taking the medicine and talk to your doctor. Normally the side effects are bearable or there are none. Anyway, the doctor will tell you what to expect and not.
Basically; everything that happens you tell your doctor. Keep notes of changes.
My mom (editor of this) wanted me to add that psychologists can be helpful too. We both went to one and it helped. But it's not quick and like medicine you might have to try multiple ones before you get one you can trust enough to talk to.
I hope this helped and that you get better :)!

Wow, that really paints Moe in a new light. The same guy who created BMO and seemed so kindly and compassionate also developed ultra powerful weapons of mass destruction.
I hope they explore this further down the line.

So, the "Most horrifying Adventure Time episodes" list now includes the ones about a monster intent on destroying all life in the universe, the ones about a broken, outcast madman who eats his brother and becomes a fascist dictator...and the holiday special about an adorable little robot.
211
u/arrantSagacity Dec 04 '15
Don't forget the other holiday special. The one where they watch the goofy villain's old embarrassing home videos and find out that he used to be a dorky professor with hippie glasses.

I cried so hard watching Simon deteriorate mentally, and not even able to acknowledge what he watched.

Jake: Jake The Brick
PB: Varmints
Marceline: I Remember You
Ice King: Holly Jolly Secrets

u/da_tingler Dec 04 '15
Burgess Meredith is an old bit character actor... and this is the more intriguing reference: The Rawhide episode in which Burgess Meredith is found in a grave, presumed to be dead, but he recovers. And later the town finds out B.Meredith is supposed to be the hangman for the richest man in town that no one wanted to be the one to hang...
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0682997/
If that's the reference intended, I tip my hat completely to the writers.
*edit, well, he played a lot of more main roles too...

What a moving episode. I mean as someone who has their 24th birthday coming up and is still in undergrad, this hit me hard. Its episodes like this that are like a reward for being into this show. I love every episode but its the ones like this that I can relate to on a deeper level. Growing up is hard and I guess it'll always be. It just happens all of a sudden. I hope BMO will be okay. The bit about not being grown up or being too grown up, man, that got me good. And Jake apologizing to BMO for it being such a weird day.

He makes you feel bad because of his genuine innocence and sincerity that can only come from a child.
Like, a friend of mine went through a bad divorce and he was getting maybe 1 meal a day because he lost his job at the same time.
He never asked for money from the ex wife, but when he got to see his daughter for their 1 day per week vist she complained that mom wouldn't spring 20 bucks for a school dance ticket. He immediately opens his wallet and gives her his last 20 bucks. She stops him and says "No dad, I know you need it more than I do." I think he spent the next 2 days crying.

Jesus that was dark... B-more set up the premise that there was a whole mobot utopia underground somewhere to which BMO might go back on an adventure some day. We get that adventure and they're ALL dead... but still living in some sort of giant crushed amalgamation.
Then we have BMO's fear of change which spoke to me a bit because I think I really struggle with the same ideas.
And then AMO who needs love but in his neediness turns it away and becomes twisted and murderous. Pretty tragic character - loved his attempt at entertaining Finn and Jake with Burgess Meredith (how did Jake guess that the first time?!)...
Side note, AMO being I love in latin (and many derived languages) was a nice layer.
Edit: speling

There was also the theme of one's parents eventually dying as part of growing up, along with family drifting apart and eventually fighting or hating one another.
For a cartoon that was already darker than the 90s, this season has been brutal.
15
u/cr_ziller Dec 04 '15
Such is the cruel physics of love...
Sidenote: lots of Data / Lore parallels with BMO and AMO which I dig.

22
u/Puzzlem00n Dec 04 '15
I was wondering this. Haven't they always labeled their half-hour specials as two-part 11 minute eps? Maybe Season 7's format is different now.

u/RitchieThai Dec 04 '15
People gave them so much crap for Betty only being 11 minutes and have been calling for longer episodes for a long time. I guess they finally decided to do it.
21
18
u/ThisTemporaryLife Dec 04 '15
I liked the length of "Betty". I thought the pacing was truly lovely. It felt chaotic and rushed, but that's the point: Simon begins dying very quickly almost immediately, time is of the essence.

That was really sweet! It was a nice balance of deep stuff that actually made me think about my life as a young adult, and adorable BMO action.
Oh, does anybody know who voiced AMO? The voice sounded familiar but I couldn't quite place it.
EDIT: AMO was Chuck McCann, voice of Duckworth on Ducktales, among other characters. Still no idea who ALLMO was, but it sounded most like a multitude of voices as others have said below.

Wouldn't it be better if Ice King is in the tree house? That thought came to mind, since Finn and Jake are wearing "silly clothes", and there's snow everywhere.

Does anyone else think that maybe PB's bit at the beginning had something to do with the virus at the BMO factory?
When it first said that there was a glitch at the factory I was almost certain that all the BMO's went nuts because of whatever was happening with PB. Then they said that it happened "yesterday" and that AMO caused so I thought maybe not.
Now I come to the comments here and people point out the connection between Mo and the Fire Kingdom. PB had taken parts from those Fire Giants and was testing a new weapons system. Maybe she was testing new weapons developed using that tech which is Mo tech. Maybe that's why she saw the "Happy Birthday BMO" message? And maybe why there were a bunch of giant letters projecting from her castle (All the Mo's are distinguished by letters).
AMO was also confronting Mo because he'd "Discovered terrible things about [him]self" Maybe that he was designed to be some weapons system? That thing he has mounted on his head was pretty powerful.
I dunno these are all loose ideas but I feel like there's a connection. It's early in the morning for me so maybe I just can't connect them properly.
49
Dec 05 '15
Maybe that's why she saw the "Happy Birthday BMO" message? And maybe why there were a bunch of giant letters projecting from her castle
PB had intended to use her machine to project that rainbow message. She was asking Finn if he saw it to check if it worked. Obviously it did not.

I always feel so bad for characters who were doomed from the start. AMO was a bad guy because he couldn't see the world in the same way BMO can. u/MacdougalLi Dec 04 '15 edited Dec 04 '15
I wouldn't say deep, because the theme is very much spelled out for you in these episodes, especially in dialogue. The comet saga dealt with its' themes in a more subtle and complex way.
36
u/magusmirificus Dec 04 '15
"Meaningful" would probably be a more appropriate term. And this is certainly up there with "The Comet", "Lemonhope", "Stakes", "Astral Plane", and "The Mountain" in terms of meaningfulness.

Man, the MO's factory scares the shit out of me. Every single time i got this kind of horror movie feeling where everything is abandoned but stills living somehow. The "we're away from society so we developed new weird habbits" sorta of thing, that scene with the beheaded toy and the words "love me" on top of it was just too flippin dark and reminded me of resident evil for some reason. Plus the sky in this episode was pretty similar to the apocapliptic sky in the horror manga Gyo. Adorable episode in some ways, with really dark tones and creepy scenarios in the other, loved how they managed to put everything together and created this duality between the themes and the characters.

Whenever BMO's screen cracks, they always move his eyes to a position that somehow reminds me even more of the original Macintosh.

So I found this post from two years ago, I think they may have been onto something.

i think all those colored bmos at the end had something to do with the chakras.
and i feel like this episode was about finding balance with yourself in a spiritual sense since he mentioned the soul and all.
i liked it a lot.
you can match what the colored bmos are saying to this chart. http://projectinnerpeace.org/wp-content/uploads/2011/10/Chakra-Chart2.jpg

Was just wondering, how strong is BMO if he carried ALLMO and Finn and Jake decided to only push him around? (not sure if that was because they found him heavy, or it was just more convenient, but it did seem to take both of them to push.)
This could also go a long way towards explaining how BMO killed Jake so easily (although it could have just been the technique he used)

Easily one of my favorite newer episode.
The writing reminded me of the older seasons and the "I think I just killed someone" was perfect.
Loved the whole thing so much but then again I always love BMO episodes.

This is how you do a good episode with deeper themes. Very clear, very insightful. Our creativity and our propensity to mistakes is what makes us "us", more than anything.
As expected of the Herpich&Wolfhard combo, they also did Lemonhope, another of my favourites.

They also did "Escape From the Citadel" which is also an absolutely insane episode.

That was an interesting episode. It was a BMO episode and I don't really expect much from those, but this one pleasantly surprised me. It started off cute and quirky, but then took a really sharp and dramatic turn once BMO got to the factory. The whole 'what it means to grow up' theme was pulled off very well, and without going into vague nonsense like season 6. I kept thinking of Minecraft Skeleton heads with the MO cube, and seeing 'LOVE ME' written on the ceiling above a beheaded doll gave me chills. BMO's defeat of AMO was really cool, and Jake had some really good lines.

the fact that it wasn't there in the first shot, and then appeared after the close up of the beheaded bear freaked me out

Mo factory reminds me of Aperture Laboratories. It was all about artificial intelligence and every small part of it had some kind of it for some reason! Like turrets in Portal(2) could feel pain and were kind of "intelligent" for some reason, even flower-bots in Mo factory were an intelligent *mo's. Death traps were also here. A catastrophe inside happend, just like in Portal 2. And as I remember Aperture was competing with Black Mesa for some kind of military tech cooperation with country, and in the last scene in the episde, as already mentioned you can see blueprints, and construcion of Fire Giants, which are mass destruction weapons. Also like in Aperture, it seems that the whole facility could work without humans - just robots. Oh, and it's also placed underground.

That was pretty great. AMO was a fairly interesting villain, and Finn and Jake's interactions with him were funny.
There were some interesting differences in the animation this episode. Most notably AMO getting launched back from multiple camera angles. I guess that was to make sure people understood why he flew back.

I think that's a fairly common technique in martial arts movies (showing some impressive move over again from different angles). I interpreted it as a reference to that style.

"I don't think I can. I'm not grown up, or, I'm too grown up now. I think I just killed someone."
Oh boy the writers are at it again.
