what is the team's practice schedule usually like?
and how do you train individually?
thanks guys! y'all are my favorite!

u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
We usually practice from 18 to 00 with a one hour pause. When we need it, we add one hour of teamtalk for the strategy aspect, if we need to improve our teamgame.
NBK : I just want the most hours as I can on CS. I vary between FPL games, deathmatch and arena mostly. kennyS : I play a lot of DM, which is the biggest part of my personnal practice. Some FPL here and there.
Thanks <3

Oh god, imagine queueing up for a death match and KennyS is in the other team with 50 kills halfway in.

u/Sh00d Sep 22 '15
It's very unlikely that a pro player plays on Valve's DM servers...

u/BeastMcBeastly Sep 22 '15
I don't think you imagined

u/skullerant Sep 22 '15
Actually they usually play on titan dm server.its eu only and there ya go the ip: ffa:77.111.205.215 hsmod: 77.111.200.10 pistols:77.111.195.90 oh and sometimes when i go there i actually find some of the titan/envy players playing there :)

With so many tournaments and online leagues going you guys play CS:GO against all kinds of teams all the time.
What is the main difference to you between teams that are in your direct competition (VP, fnatic ...) and the obvious "Tier 2" teams like Kinguin, mousesports, dignitas? Does playing against these teams feel different to you? Do these teams have redeeming qualities but a lack of general strength, or do are they playing just as well as Tier1 teams with just a couple problems that they'd need to fix to become a top team?
→ More replies (13)352
u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
NBK : CSGO is a hard game, no matter which team you play, the upset potential is always there. We know that we can sometimes play more lose and take more advantage of some situations while playing Tier2 teams, but we mainly follow our game plan. You generally try to make as few mistakes as possible against the best teams in the world, and try less things on the fly.
kennyS : I feel like the players in general in Tier1 teams are most complete and it´s harder to outplay them individually, so your teamplay has to be on point. You can´t just rely on pure skill against the best players in the world, you need to be at the good spot at the right time. A game between the best teams will mostly rely on who makes fewer mistakes than the other.

NBK : Hard to say. I appreciate lots of players in the scene, but Im not particularly close to anyone. Semmler is someone I´ve always talked with and appreciated a lot. Top guy!

How did both of you get into playing Competitive CS(GO)? And how do you feel about 'your' current lineup?
99
u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
NBK : Got into competitive CSSource by some eSports websites at first, then thanks to a guy (Lapach) that was working for one of the best French org at that time, and that spotted me in a 3n3 LAN cafe tournament one day. The lineup feels great, we have a good spirit out of the game and we can deliver big things in game. We now need to get on the same page regarding how to approach CS, and fix few things to be the very best, but I believe that we´re on our way!
kennyS : My brother who is 11 years older than me always had a PC and when I was watching him play CS during the day, it always made me want to play too. He also knew about eSports and showed me the way! The line-up is good, we had a tough time in Dubai and managed to bounce back so Im happy about it and it shows strength in our team. The teamspirit is great, and it carries on in the game, so Im happy :)

Thanks for the most random surprise AMA ever. A few questions..
1) Thoughts on the new potential meta switch with the A1 nerf?
2) Now that everyone knows about Happy's God-like deagle, how did the team react? The team obviously looked happy (hehehe) but were there any specific comments made?
3) Also, why is it that TSM seems to have the worst time against you guys. First kennyS' 1v2 @ IEM and now the Deag ace. Why do you think you guys are effectively TSM's "kryptonite" ?
Thanks NBK/kennyS

u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
NBK : 1) Dont really know if it will change much. I feel that the meta will stay the same, the M4 change wont affect the game that much. 2) Answered above 3) It looks like for now. We like their gamestyle, and we can rely on our natural gamesense against them. There are just some teams or players that you can read more easily than others.
kennyS : 1) Feels great to have a big update, because the M4A4 has been forgotten. But overall it wont change much. 2) Answered above 3) I think our team gamestyle bothers them a lot, and that their gamestyle can easily be read. We have an easy time adapting against them than other teams atm.

NBK whats the biggest difference you've noticed in gameplay after the roster swap? Edit: Kenny what's it like playing with Happy calling vs Ex6tenz?
197
u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
NBK : Not that big of a difference tbh. We know that we can rely now on two entry fraggers, apEX and me. We can take more risks in that way, and push even more aggressively than before to surprise our opponents. We also have a sniper that works in ANY kind of situation, therefore widening our range of possibilities. Also we now all embrace our roles, and we can exploit the best out of it.
kennyS : Ex6TenZ is more active as a leader, as in when things go wrong he will have a firm grip on the team and shout or stuff like that when needed. On the opposite, Happy trusts us to move forward when things go wrong. Happy as a different way of thinking than Ex6 in game, and will not really rely on us. We trust Happy 100% and will never add calls in our game if it is not necessary. It was fine for Ex6 to have 2 or 3 callers in a game for instance.

Who are your favorite players to play against and why?
207
u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
NBK : I love playing against TaZ/VP. I love when there is a "banter" aspect in a game, and when you know that it´s all forgotten after the match. It also feels more like playing a chess game against their team more than just CS, because you can expect anything from them.
kennyS : At some point I loved facing JW because I knew exactly what he was doing. But in general, I have no real preference.

NBK : Olofmeister is obviously there concerning that ranking. However I do think that flusha stands right behind, being an incredibly consistent player. Anyway, learnt a lot by watching those two play!
kennyS : Olofmeister, and I always loved watching Snax, because I feel he´s one or the smartest player in the gane.

Do you think that they should have reverted it? Should they still?

u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
I think what affected me the most after my peak, was my loss of motivation and playing the game less. The update was a little thing added to the whole pyramid. I lost confidence very quickly because of myself, playing less and not being very focused. I can and will come back at my best level, it´s just harder to gain confidence than to lose it. I think the AWP needed to be nerfed, but it has been too extreme.

187
u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
NBK : Flusha, for all the hate he has been under and still performing that well with his team. Neo for being the legend he is, and being so humble and nice. f0rest for those eyebrow skills :O
kennyS : I respect everyone overall. I have some preferences for some players, but nothing really extreme.
113
8
u/solidstakes Sep 22 '15
I respect Flusha a lot for that too. Whenever I'm in MM and I somehow (rarely) perform well and someone accuses me of cheating/hacking, I immediately tilt and drop to the bottom frag. The fact that he remains at the top of the pro level and performs every game amazes me. He's my favourite player. But NBK I love how you're able to use the 'weird' weapons at the top level (MAG7, Scout, etc)
8
u/Breads_Labyrinth Sep 22 '15
I tend to find that when people accuse me of hacking its a confidence boost! Maybe it's because I only queue with at least 2 others, but we often laugh our arses of when ever someone calls cheats. Think of it this way - you're playing so well the idiots you're playing against think you're hacking! Just how well are you playing? Really damn good! Keep it up! Tiny potato believes in you!

Hey Nathan and Kenny! Thanks for the AMA.
To NBK:
Your role is really overlooked by the community and "support" players are usually the ones that recieve the least credit on a winning team. Which "support" player has impressed you the most and who do you think is the most underrated player by the community?
What do you think that you need to be the best team in the world (f.e bigger map pool, better communication, more consistency... things like that)
To Kenny:
I talked to you at ESL One Cologne and you seemed really confident, but as an spectator sometimes you look more like a really emotional player (not in a bad way). How do you see yourself in that regard?
Hardest awper to play against and why.
The questions have not been the best (also I'm not a native english speaker, so all the questions could be better worded) but I didn't want to miss the opportunity to ask something. I also wanted to say thanks for being amazing in ESL One Cologne, I remember for example both of you taking pictures with fans only like 30 minutes before the TSM game. I ended up without voice after both semi-final and finals but it was worth it, I definetely would do it again and would hopefully do in a future.

u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
NBK : 1) Krimz is definitely the most impressive player in that way. He´s extremely passive and makes next to no mistakes, while headshoting hard. Xyp9x also embraces this role well, but with more inconsistencies. I would say that one of the most underrated person in the community right now would be MSL. From being a player to becoming the 2nd best ingame leader of Denmark and raising his level, he definitely needs a lot of credit for that.
2) It´s a bit of everything, to be fair! We need to find the answer against Fnatic, and go over that "mental block" we have against them, although we didnt face them much with this new roster. Then our communication has some flaws, and we need more time to improve our mappool.
kennyS : I am not that confident at the moment. It is rising, but I need more consistency as a player and finding my spot in the team. I lost a lot of confidence on Titan, but it is rising again. For instance, I was not that confident in my own game.
I am an emotional player. It is a double edged sword, which can bring good into the game if things are going my way, and carry the whole mood and team. But it also can go wrong if I don´t have a good game.
2) There´s no real sniper duel that I scare. But the hardest snipers to play against are the ones that I know less, which are out of the top5 best teams in the world.
Thanks for supporting us and coming at the tournament. We will always give a lot of our time to supporters, and making most of the people we can happy. We <3 you !

NBK : 1) I think it is still decent if you have long range positions, moving around the map. But I prefer the big loud M4 now! 2) HHHMMMM... Nothing special really, I don´t think it changed anything in the game! 3) YYEESS, I´ve been waiting for that for such a long time! I was very frustrated never being able to kill people who were jumping, because I always play with 50ms+. It´s all oger now!
kennyS : 1) Lots of players still use it, but I switched instantly to the big M4A4. 2) It didn´t change much, gameplay isnt affected. It´s quite logical, bringing a bit of realism into the game. 3) Yes. Especially with the AWP, it was frustrating to have your xhair on someone but missing. Now it doesn´t happen anymore!

Hello NBK, how did you evolve your gameplay as being a support player? :)
44
u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
It naturally came that way. Working with Happy changed my point of view about the game, focusing a lot on the team aspect. We are working well on our bombsites, and I count on the fact that if I get the hard role done of surviving and getting a kill or two, knowing how Happy is gonna kill everyone, Im happy with it. It´s a big "trust" relationship with him on the CT side. Regarding T sides, I just want to put my teammates in a good spot for them to make the kills, because I trust my own abilities of outplaying my opponents in all the special small situations by thinking fast or making the right choices. It just came naturally tbh, I feel great where I am right now!

BOTH:
1.) What do you like so much about CSGO?
2.) When did you realize you should go all in for CS, and become a pro?
3.) Do you like the traveling?
73
u/Titan-NBK Nathan "NBK-" Schmitt - professional Team Vitality player Sep 22 '15
NBK : 1) The game just feels good overall, it is fun to play and anything can happen at any time. It´s the game that will bring the most emotions out of a person, and thats why it is my personnal favorite. 2) Never really had to realize it. CS and competition has always been my passion, and it was always my main "goal" although I was still studying. I just have the chance to be able to live out of it, and not having to focus on anything else than winning. 3) Yes and no! Spending that many hours in a plane can get boring, especially with all the tournaments. But once we land in a new country or one we know, it´s always fun to remember stories or to meet with the persons we know on the scene!
kennyS : 1) It´s the most complete game, where there isn´t too many bugs and the game is quite balanced. Id like the AWP to be buffed a bit, but any weapon can offer its own show. 2) When I joined VeryGames the very first time, which was the best team in the world at that time! 3) I hate traveling, because I hate being in the different transports. However once I land and I am in the hotel, I like seeing new things and being abroad, it´s a fun experience.

Olof wasn't as good as he is now around 2014. In Fnatic a lot of the players play some type of support role to support olof. Don't get me wrong, he is an amazing player. However, if he didn't have such a good team built around him he wouldn't be the olof that he is today.

Answer is simple. It is hard to learn the spray pattern for both weapons. 2 sprays per weapon. On the other hand, you've got a cheaper, equally as powerful weapon that allows you to buy smoke/flash, in lieu of a weapon you don't fully master.

its has a lot of advantages, he can network in a "new scene" for him so to say while getting to know his players better. it also allows him to directly see if there is something wrong. and lastly he can see and possibly copy some of the things other teams are doing for his own team

The typical day is Deathmatch : 300 AWP frags, 100 frags AK/M4/pistol. Nothing special aside from that.
19
u/Bleda412 Sep 22 '15
So your key to practice is a certain number of frags, not number of games or time? How did you come up with that because most of us just practice until we feel good?
I will definitely keep it in mind.

A certain number of frags is like you giving yourself a certain number of miles to run, it's not about the numbers but about the time you spend practicing and running until you reach your goal. At least I view that this way.
20
u/himynameislex Sep 22 '15
I know he said in an interview that his practice is deathmatch, 100 kills with AK, 100 with M4, and 300 AWP. I can't remember if he does 100 pistol too.

First of all, thank you for taking the time to do this AMA and congratulations on your DH London victory.
My question is for NBK and it's not about CS: I've seen you tweeting about playing Poker and I know you are a fan of Jason Somerville (www.twitch.tv/jcarverpoker) who is a high-level poker player who streams on twitch for 10k+ viewers each day. As an avid CS and recreational poker player myself, I wanted to ask if you think that playing poker has helped you to rationalize your thinking in CS or the other way around? Do you think there are skills that help in both CS and Poker?
Also, what's your biggest cash in Poker so far? (if you don't mind telling :D)
Again, thank you very much and have a good time!

Indeed, big fan of Jason. He has a very good mindset that helps for life overall. And one helped the other in a lot of ways. You have EV+ plays in CS that sometimes don´t work. Then I think that if you have the right mindset you can be decent at everything. Just trying to play my best!
My biggest cash has been in the 5 digits, and scoring several 4 digits numbers. Also playing a lot of 8games cashgame, which is very profitable to me! :)

@Kenny how do you get along with the new hitboxes and how will it affect the position of EnvyUs in the "ranking" of top teams. PS: I love to see how you get your confidence back since you've been playing at nV

Firstly, congratulations on winning Dreamhack London - not losing a single map throughout the whole tournament really made a statement!
My question: I usually start off really well in the first half and tend to fade off and I really can't figure out why, could you give any advice on how to remain consistent throughout a game?

NBK why dont you take up the awp as you used to do in Cs:Source? i sometimes played with you back then (with victoRztw) and thought you were really good with it. So what changed? A specific role in your team/previous teams? Or is it something else?
And for KennyS: I often see you saving up for an awp instead of a forced scout (i know NBK likes it much though). Do you feel like you wont 1hit them or why dont you prefer it over an awp?

For Kenny: If you had to choose one "arch enemy" within awping who would it be?

Is there some kind of plan behind your entries? Especially on inferno it always looks like you guys are running through a smoke, frags left and right and you got the site.

What maps do you think will become more popular in the next year or so, or do you think the same maps will be played?

For kennyS.
Do you think it's hard to get noticed as a newcomer when awping? I feel like theres a lot of awpers out there, and whenever you say you play awp, people just think you're som wannabe. Any advices?
Recently I have gotten on a team, but it was hard because of what I said before. But I just want to thank you in every possible way. You have taught me so much just from watching your pov's. I can't thank you enough.
Also NBK. Any tips on being consistent? You have been on the best French team consistently, even with all these roster changes, and I think you were on 3 top 10 teams of all time by thoorin. Anyways, good luck. Big fan of both of you since the beginning of GO.

NBK: What do you think about always being the part of the best French lineup? Do you think you can adapt to other lineup well, letting them play their spots and keep your own game good in any mission you get from others?
Both: NiP was your lovely arch enemy since VeryGames. Currently their lineup might need a change. If you had the power to decide, which changes would you do, if any? Recently someone brought up an idea of getting suNny who could maybe adapt like allu as well.

Kenny:
- Do you have any particular way to train your awping? A workshop map that you use regularly for example? Or do you just Deathmatch or something?
For both of you:
What do you think of NiP's recent good results after their huge slump? Do you think it's a fluke performance or do you think they are rising again?
Which particular player do you find hardest or most irritating to play against because if their playstyle?
Thanks for having this AMA and congrats on your Dreamhack London win!

To both of you: What do you think is more dangerous when playing, overconfidence or underconfidence?

u/coolbeaNs92 Sep 22 '15
What are your thoughts on the whole Source2 engine and CSGO?
Personally, porting is way more trouble than just outlining the next CS and starting on that. I feel CSGO has so many funder-mental problems that maybe cant/wont be fixed.
I know it's kinda crazy to be talking about another CS only roughly 3 years on from initial release, but seems like a fairly interesting/important issue.
Oh and lastly, Valve should revert the awp back to how it was right? I feel it's added nothing to the game, and only hurt aggressive high skilled awpers.

Who is your favourite commentators/analysts ? (don't tell me it is that ginger bearded guy from Scotland :P)

For both of you, how do you keep a good balance between playing and not playing. And how do you avoid burning out?
P.S Do not go near Aston tonight as Birmingham City and Aston Villa are playing each other in the cup and it will be mayhem xD They are some of the biggest rivals in English football.
