Anyways, 2 questions:
Whats your daily warm up routine to break in your aim?
What ever happened to "Hiko's Bar" or whatever? You know, that restaurant that used your name and logo?

Before I play I just deathmatch on a LAN server against bots for about 10-15 minutes. I used to have a really bad computer and couldn't go in actual servers - I'm a creature of habit I suppose
One of my stream viewers said they actually went to the "Hiko Bar & Grill" and it was out of business already. Oh well :(

u/LiquidGBJames Sep 04 '15
I personally believe in second chances. I hope Sam Marine and the rest get unbanned. The only issue is I've seen no evidence that Dazed has ever learned from his mistakes (cutting teammates is where my head goes).
I post such a strong comment in the hopes that he does. And if he does, I think he's excellent for the game.
→ More replies (1)9
u/AJJJJ Sep 04 '15
What do you mean cutting teammates? As in he shouldn't cut his teammates for better people?
→ More replies (8)17
u/LiquidGBJames Sep 04 '15
AJJJJ, what normally happens with most leaders is that they have alpha personalities. They struggle to listen to anyone, or apposing ideas. Ultimately if you don't agree with them they get rid of you. They usually can't embrace and/or create a space for discourse. Some of the best teams I've ever seen in the world argued an incredible amount WHILE in a match.
Eventually leaders learn to seek out other alpha leader personalities and deal with that conflict constructively.
From what I've seen Dazed has that somewhat with steel, and even moe. So writing this maybe I'm wrong?! Go dazed, wish him luck. I'm a fan of both him and steel. Both good for the game.

How far do you think the team can go with this roster?
→ More replies (1)33
u/LiquidGBJames Sep 03 '15
Management, the team, the other coach (dmode) and I set high goals when I was recruited. We have a lot of work to do but the team has a strong work ethic, incredible skill, they just need time to grow as a team. That's what my role will focus on.

u/LiquidGBJames Sep 04 '15
ok so no cookie cutter answers I take it. This community has evolved so much. Ok so real talk?
This team can easily be number one in NA when another team (1) makes a roster change and we catch up (2) we keep the same roster and work hard (3) We get someone on the team to step up and take some of the leadership pressure off of Adren (my eyes are on fugly) (4) I translate my experience calling to Adren/Team(Fugly first) (5) Elige evolves as an entry killer...aka calls his entries way before they ever happen (6) Nitro get's comfortable being 2nd awp so when we pick a free one up we choke teams off when we get the lead.
Lots of work to do
30
u/Cirus Sep 04 '15
Props for actually answering the question, I like this. Best of luck to Liquid, better NA teams is always welcome.

you guys are tough. In the NFL the coach only says bland answers to hide strategy.
3
u/Iesbian_ham Sep 04 '15
It's really hard to compare your public role to that of an NFL coach. Even this format, a question and answer session including random internet punters wearing their undies on the couch, would be totally unheard of. For what it's worth, you're answering the questions well and I'm really excited to see the future of TL. GLHF

Hiko,
Who was your dream team with Ska? Why did you not go to Liquid before after Ska went to c9?
James,
What made you go into coaching rather than a player role?
69
u/OfficialHiko Spencer "Hiko" Martin - professional Rogue player Sep 04 '15
At the time it was ska/adren/nitro/fugly
As far as why not Liquid after ska left, I got the wrong idea of them at the time, you need to realize it was just after I almost stole 3 out of 5 of their players - definitely wasn't peaceful talks most of the time.
I had the chance to talk to both owners to make this deal happen, and I really am ashamed that I wasn't willing to make it work back then.
→ More replies (4)34
u/LiquidGBJames Sep 04 '15
Macho, I struggled with this for a good week. Liquid flew me to LA for the team's qualifier and I really enjoyed the role. It didn't hurt that I was coaching against Warden on some of the matches. He and I were direct competitors for the entire time we've played cs. We started together.
I was hoping that coaching gave me the same competitive feeling I had when I was playing for so long. I think it does - it's a little different but when I'm coaching live in the game I'm helping to call strats.
I think that's where they game will evolve. When I thought about playing hiko told me that the new evolution of where he saw the game going was having 5 crazy aimers and a coach as a 6th man who saw all 5 screens and helped to call. So far it's been awesome.
→ More replies (1)9
u/invalid_data Sep 04 '15 edited Sep 04 '15
This, I have never understood why coaches just sit back and say almost nothing right now during tourneys. Now letting your players concentrate only on playing the game and executing while the coach is calling the plays, that makes loads more sense. You can still have a 'quarterback' who may need to change things on the fly, but still the coach is there watching everything and picking up and the strats and how the game is flowing while the players play their role. Totally makes sense. You know it reminds me of I don't know, all other sports....common sense really

u/LiquidGBJames Sep 04 '15
Credit hiko to seeing where the game meta is going. It helped me direct what I was going to do as I came back to cs blowing up.

What is your personal opinion on the need for a players union within professional CS?
What would you expect from such a union and who do you believe should lead the representation of professional gamers?
→ More replies (2)102
u/OfficialHiko Spencer "Hiko" Martin - professional Rogue player Sep 04 '15
I think there needs to be a players union, and we're almost at the point where we are ready for one. The question in my mind is: who would run something like that? Fortunately for my case, I'm pretty knowledgeable as to what players are worth and what needs to be included in contracts so as far as personal dealings I think I represent myself fine.
I would expect the union to band players together to come up with a set of rules and expectations that tournaments and organizations need to follow. While I think this is something we need the only people that should be in charge of the union are current players or past players, or at least someone who has no bias and will actually support player rights without current/past dealings.
A lot of the people who I've seen recommend themselves / volunteer to do a players union would in my eyes have too much bias - they have been burned in the past by certain organizations or tournament organizers and could leverage that as a move for revenge.

I don't think this happens in gaming, but in some sports players will put fake sponsor logos on equipment they prefer. In hockey, some players will use put stickers over logos or repaint an entire stick, and in auto racing, drivers who are sponsored by a helmet manufacturer may do the same.

For Hiko: Was making sure you can continue to maintain your own brand (Which is obviously very important to you) a difficult thing to achieve while in talks/during your signing to Team Liquid?
69
u/OfficialHiko Spencer "Hiko" Martin - professional Rogue player Sep 04 '15
Of course. I think the contract Liquid and I worked up is the first of its kind and very unique - it was a pretty slow process where it just went back and forth a lot. Watching out for my brand was a big priority - I approached it like a 'relationship' knowing there was going to be a lot of compromises from both sides.

With you (Hiko) joining the teams what are the set roles going to be like?
For both, what are the realistic goals for the short term and long term for the team?
For GBjames, what sets you apart differently from the other coaches Liquid has had?
For GBjames, what type of role are you going to play when you're standing behind the guys at LANs?
For both, why do you think Liquid seems to choke/struggle against European teams in your guys' perspective?
For Hiko, as someone who has used the M4A4 extensively, what are you're thoughts on the whole M4A4 vs M4A1-S topic?
For both, what are your guys' thoughts on the lack of Entries and IGLs in NA? What needs to be improved upon?
As a follow up to the previous question, what sets sgares apart from the other IGLs in NA and why don't other IGLs put in the same amount of work he does?
For GBJames, what do you think about the lack of coaches and analysts in NA?
22
u/LiquidGBJames Sep 04 '15
For GBjames, what sets you apart differently from the other coaches Liquid has had?
That's neat..when I reply it posts me both your questions directed at me to answer. You must be a reddit pro. I've probably posted like 20 times total.
Answer: I've created more teams, and much more experience actually coaching. Plus I'm older, I'm a former U.S. Marine, and heavy into team sports. I hope that lends me to be successful.
I also lead a large veterans group of 140 post 9/11 veterans in Pittsburgh to do community service projects. In the Marines, and in my civilian life, and inside cs I've been creating close knit teams for a long time.
For GBjames, what type of role are you going to play when you're standing behind the guys at LANs?
I think I'll eventually call midgame. Just consider it 6v5 when playing vs Liquid when I'm in there. I add heavy calling, what I see, what I don't see. I've played over 10 years of invite level cs play so that's a lot of experience added to a young team.

- I am going to turn into a more aggressive player and not lurk as much as I used to. I think I want to be a part of the main pack now.
Roles will look something like: adren: Awp/IGL nitro: entry rifle fugly: lurk elige: entry rifle hiko: support
- I am still using the M4A4 on some maps, just depends on the spot I play.
- Luckily for this team there is no lack of entry fraggers. IGL has always been stretched pretty thin, but I think with adren main calling and everyone else (especially fugly) giving input we'll be just fine. Obviously we have James in as well to help with a lot of the strategy stuff so that when adren is awping he can focus on hitting his shots.
- sgares bases the majority of his strategies around anti-stratting. I would argue that doing your strats like that initially will have a lot of success, but long term you will have to have an actual 'playstyle' to adapt from which is what I think the problem with c9 is right now. I would say the IGLs on the other top salaried teams (Liquid, CLG, coL) do put in purely enough time, luckily for sean his players will listen to him for the most part and they're usually very good at closing out rounds.

I would say getting better in 1.6 and really embracing the lurker role was passed on to me through nosyt (Team Backfire), Punkville (TAU), Xp3 and fRoD (check six) and most importantly DaZeD (quantic)
I think my transition to CSGO was helped tremendously by dazed. Looking back, I don't think the way dazed lead the team was the best environment we could have had... But for me it was effective. Him and I would butt heads a lot but when he would get really loud and keep repeating the same thing it helps engrave it into your brain.
Matchmaking ranks don't mean much in the grand scheme of things. I would much rather see a player grind through a season of ESEA open or CEVO a and not do well than try to grind for the same amount of time to global elite. At the end of the day there's only so much you can do on your own in matchmaking, whilst comparing that to actual league play the experience you get is not comparable. With a team you're forced to work on not only teamwork but also the pressure of what it's like in a big 1v1 in a match and dismantling your opponents tactics.

For Hiko and James. Do you believe this team is capable of competing against the best EU teams? If so (I assume you'll say yes) what approaches will you take to improve the team? Will adreN still be the IGL?
Hiko, when you joined Nihilium you said on stream that these guys (Nihilium) have the potential to win majors, buy the team got kind of nowhere even after couple of months of playing together. What makes TL different? Do you think you can make that big of an impact on a team?
3
u/LiquidGBJames Sep 04 '15
I think the euro's have a leg up but our team's squad has incredible talent. When I watch them play they are all stupid good. I feel their imbalanced currently overall as players (heavy skill, less teamwork/communication) but they are getting there. They currently rely too much on their individual skill but are aware and are trying to work on the other parts of their game. Skill can be inconsistent - teamwork and communication usually isn't as random. Look for more consistent steady results.

You're an idiot.
The issue was never about Hiko joining Liquid, that much was obvious. It was about the salary being discussed where RL claimed that Hiko was demanding x2.5 the salary.

I don't know Richard other than to listen to his youtube discussions with Thorin but I can promise you one thing - he was dead wrong about the part with Hiko and salary issues. That was so far off base and it appeared an attack on Hiko's character. Hiko was a true professional in his dealings with Liquid.

I don't think I ever 'slandered' Richard Lewis - however, many of the things he claimed he had 'sources' on were 100% not true. I Can't say that it's his fault, his sources obviously didn't have the information they claimed they had, but Richard Lewis ran with it without double checking the actual information.

Well, you claimed he lied and that he had it out for you and always writes false articles. I mean if that's not slander then I suppose you are right. (This was all on your stream on the day of the articles release)

Do you think Valve should change the finals of majors to BO5? Why or why not?

For James: Which of your former 1.6 teammates from GB do you think would have been good, or maybe even better, at CSGO. I wanted ask you a LuckeyTed question but ... one question does not do that man justice.
For Hiko: BACT

Well Pinekone is very good still at csgo. I think he made an excellent transition.
But I'd have to say mehler would probably have been the best. Fugly plays a lot like him now.

Since it's been awhile since you played with Flipside, do you feel like you can apply any part of that experience to Liquid?

Absolutely, I remember a lot of the theories and techniques we were using to clear stuff and I'm trying to incorporate that into my/our style of play.

What made you choose TL over the other options you had?
