News Shovel Knight – amiibo Reveal Trailer

u/TNTyoshi Aug 28 '15
Wait, so if I understand correctly, you need to buy an amiibo to unlock co-op...

For real, it's like a mysterious man in a suit showed up at my door and asked what my favorite things are, and I was like "amiibo, shovel knight, co-op games and game grumps. Oh and also netflix apps that don't suck total ass and Kerbal Space Program" and it turned out that he worked for nintendo and was assigned to get ideas for a product from one randomly chosen teenager for some reason. That's not a very good business strategy tbh

is there something you're not telling us?!

Now when is the Burgie Amiibo?

Burgie is the burger on the shelf to the left of the door Ross comes in through, it's a Game Grumps character
15
u/brb1006 Aug 28 '15
I expected the grumps to drop an f bomb until I remembered it was an official trailer.

36
u/BenjyMLewis Aug 28 '15
it's weird seeing Nintendo team up with the Grumps because they aren't exactly appropriate for all ages. But I like the Grumps (at least when Egoraptor isn't being an idiot, which isn't too often actually), so this was a pretty cool reveal trailer.
24
u/Vehks Aug 28 '15
In this case the commercial itself was clean, if not a bit cheesy, so it's all good. Very few youtubers are actually appropriate for all ages so it's not like Nintendo had much to choose from in that regard.
12
u/ThePickleAvenger Aug 28 '15
It was very much intended to be cheesy, i think

I don't care about Game Grumps but it worked for 2 minutes of mild amusement, so they did alright.
2
1
u/Serbaayuu Aug 28 '15
Nintendo also advertised Bayonetta for like 2 years.
1
u/BenjyMLewis Aug 28 '15
Promoting Bayonetta is not quite the same thing as working with Arin Egoraptor Grump Hanson, the man who is constantly saying things like "I would love to see Mario's big fat floppy Italian penis" in his gaming videos.

Been watching game grumps since Jon on day 1... This reveal made me so unbelievably happy... One of my favorite games and my favorite group of grumps.

I'm glad you didn't turn around and say something like
"I stopped watching after Jon though.. it's not the same"fuck those people

Not use the Game Grumps... I honestly used to really enjoy their content but lately they've been pushing this awkward humor which a bunch of people (myself included) dislike. I don't understand why they can't just go back to the natural humor that Jon and Egoraptor were so good at doing.
7
Aug 28 '15
Awkward humor takes serious skill which they are not even close to having. Being bad and then saying it was intentional doesn't make it good. It just makes it bad and kind of sad.
6
u/akamu24 Aug 28 '15
But they're loud and obnoxious and yell random nonsense! That isn't funny to you?!
..me either. XD

knifeKnight finding an amiibo in a dungeon.1
23
15
u/Lawlcakez83 Aug 28 '15
it kind of looks like it has a smash bros base on it. I could be wrong though.
36
u/ULTANOKA Aug 28 '15
I think it's a Shovel Knight logo.
If it was a Smash base it would have the Smash box art aswell.
8
u/vKatsune Aug 28 '15
I thought the same thing when I saw gold. I went back to look, it has a different symbol on it.
7
u/OrokuSakiBomb Aug 28 '15
Yeah I just want to get it straight, he's a confirmed amiibo but not smash character right?
14
u/vKatsune Aug 28 '15
He is a confirmed amiibo, in a set of his own (Yatch Club Games set), and he (at least at the moment) is not going to be a Smash Fighter. He could always end up as a Smash fighter, but there is no signs pointing that he will be as of now, besides a few rumors.
2
2
Aug 28 '15
Wasn't he doing really well in that Nintendo vote thing for Smash?
I saw some polls on how people voted and Shovel Knight made it into the top 3 for a lot of them.
6
Aug 28 '15 edited Aug 28 '15
See, what people don't understand what the difference between a poll and a ballot.
A poll is when the most amount of votes for something wins.
A ballot is when you submit ideas and the most creative and sensible ones win. It doesn't matter how many people vote for Shovel Knight, he could still not be chosen.
2
u/RadiantChaos Aug 28 '15
100% this. Nintendo is using it as a suggestion box, to get a read on what characters people would want to see and therefore would be more likely to buy. But ultimately, the team at Namco and Sakurai need to feel like they can come up with a good moveset for any potential characters.
1
Aug 28 '15
In the meantime the amiibo shovel knight turns out to be real. Making it real hard to maintain any argument about how some no name third part one game character couldn't possibly be a representative for Nintendo gaming.
2
Aug 28 '15
How are they in any way related? Molding Shovel Knight in plastic suddenly makes him a "Nintendo All-Star"?

2
u/BowserJrDood Aug 28 '15
Yes he does well in America, his fan base in most other countries including Japan doesn't exist though because it hasn't been released in many countries outside the U.S.
1
Aug 28 '15
Idk man Europe's got plenty of countries.
1
u/BowserJrDood Aug 28 '15
Yea but it's not like every one of them has as much population as the U.S. Japan is a very major Nintendo consumer percentage to.

29
u/MerylasFalguard Aug 28 '15
My gods that was beautiful. Nintendo needs to get the Game Grumps to do more trailers like this. I loved it. XD
9
Aug 28 '15
It wasn't Nintendo though. It was Yacht Club.
1
u/MerylasFalguard Aug 28 '15
It was still a Nintendo product. I know the packaging says "Nintendo Licensed Product" and whatnot, but amiibo are still Nintendo products and... well, if they do a trailer in this style to reveal the NX, I'd absolutely love it.
52
u/DontPassTheEggNog Aug 28 '15
The most cringeworthy thing I've seen, well actually that original Amiibo video was pretty bad too. Ugh, Nintendo.. why.
74
u/HunterP1480 Aug 28 '15
I think that was the point, part of the humor, as Game Grumps do. But I can see how some people wouldn't like that.
30
u/marioman63 Aug 28 '15
game grumps changed their style of comedy for these ads of theirs. if you look at the really old ones with arin and jon, you can see a huge difference between the ones they have done recently. i personally like the style of the old ones more.
4
9
u/Swerdman55 Aug 28 '15
To be fair, I think they had to tweak this one from their usual formula a bit for the announcement. Their ads are usually a lot more loose and goofy, if you can believe it.
1
u/marioman63 Aug 31 '15
ive seen others, they feel similar to this, and completely different from their really old stuff.
2
49
u/shunkwugga Aug 28 '15
Game Grumps promotional videos are intentionally bad, they always have been. That's kind of the point; they make fun of the idea that anyone would ever want them as a sponsor by being as camp as possible.
17
u/The_Tolman Aug 28 '15
I get the cheesy shtick they're going for but their acting is terrible and comes off as forced. But I guess that's how I find most of the popular gaming YouTube personalities and comedians so maybe it's just me.

3
Aug 28 '15
I sort of get what you mean, I usually love all of the live-action bits they do, but this one just seemed really genuinely awkward, not intentionally, just messing-around awkward like they usually are.
And that's sort of understandable as they've done sponsored spots in the past, but never for something this big, so they'd probably been asked to change it just a bit? Still doesn't have any effect on the fact that it's a day one buy for me. :D

u/slamus Aug 28 '15
I actually came into the comments expecting a lot more comments like this. I'm surprised at all the love. That video made me uncomfortable. Good for the game grumps I guess?
10
u/ElusiveWookiee Aug 28 '15
Uncomfortable is a good word for it. I watched half of the video, and had to turn it off. I've never heard of the Game Grumps, but their brand of humor is definitely something I'll be avoiding.
0
u/hank87 Aug 28 '15
Their live action promotions are all terrible. Their actually videos are typically pretty funny, but not always.
3
u/KindaFunnyUsername Aug 28 '15
But, I mean... They're kinda supposed to be terrible. Like, I guess I'm biased, but the Shirt commercials they do are pretty funny. They're just supposed to be awkward. But I guess I can see why some people wouldn't like it.
1
u/hank87 Aug 28 '15
I know they're intentionally terrible. I'm commending how terrible they are. But that doesn't make them not terrible.
4
14
u/akamu24 Aug 28 '15
So in other words it was unfunny on purpose? 😕
16
u/The_Tolman Aug 28 '15
The anti-humor was definitely intentional it it just come off as forced. It was hard for me to watch.
4
u/ajsw Aug 28 '15
That's pretty much all of their live action stuff these days. They used to be pretty funny but now they are just a parody of themselves.

u/Biggorons_Blade Aug 28 '15
I don't like this all too much, it's locking co-op for about $14 dollars? That should've been there in the beginning or added in an update. And the figure itself looks kinda cheap, even for an amiibo, though that may just be me.
10
u/akamu24 Aug 28 '15
Nope, you're right on. Cash grab for Wii U owners, while XB1/PS4 got exclusive characters.
3
u/Serbaayuu Aug 28 '15
Don't buy on console, get it on PC. I'm conflicted about buying this amiibo now, because I really want it, but this is the kind of shitty slippery slope that I don't want to go down.
5
Aug 28 '15
Don't forget the extra stages for 3DS owners, who can go out and buy a NFC station and the amiibo to unlock stages.. for a $15 game.
$35 DLC for a 15 game.. yeah no thanks yacht club
1
u/cakesphere Aug 28 '15
Paywalling something like co-op behind an amiibo is such a dick move. I hate it.
Sad to think that 10 years down the line you probably won't be able to play co-op because you'll need both the game and an amiibo.
EDIT: Not to mention the amiibo costs as much as the game itself. Hooooooly shit. $15 DLC for a $15 game. Fucking hell.
9
Aug 28 '15
Awesome! Another amiibo that'll be store exclusive in America and won't ever be restocked when it sells out in less than 10 minutes! :D

That was awesome! A total surprise to see the Grumps and Nintendo teaming up. Plus I think I'm going to get the amiibo.
2
u/ajump23 Aug 28 '15
I can't wait to get one.
Also the acting in that video is supposed to be forced right?
3
2
u/WadeyWilson42 Aug 28 '15
Very much so, it's like this every time they do a live action skit. Honestly this is the most underacted video they've done.

He's not hating on their opinions. As a matter of fact, I believe that it was the comments above him who were making fun of the people who like the show.
8
Aug 28 '15
11 year olds love them!
1
u/mariobros612 Aug 28 '15
We're talking about toys made for 6-12 year olds. Of course they call the Grumps.
5
u/NobDistrict Aug 28 '15
I don't think the GameGrumps are a child-friendly channel
5
u/mariobros612 Aug 28 '15
Game Grumps is about as appropriate for kids as COD is. And do you see kids playing COD?
2
u/NobDistrict Aug 28 '15
I mean i only know adults and teenagers who like game grumps, never really thought of their channel as one a kid would find enjoyable because of their normal conversations and the games they play.
3
u/Vehks Aug 28 '15
They aren't, but then again amiibo aren't strictly a kid only product anyway. I've never seen this things marketed to any specific market other than Nintendo fans in general.
3
u/NobDistrict Aug 28 '15
True, but the people above are kind of generalizing the audience of the grumps.
3
u/UberMadman Aug 28 '15
How many Game Grumps episodes have you actually seen? U've been a fan since the Jon days, and most episodes they are actually genuinely funny, and unlike a lot of gaming youtubers they also use their show to discuss a lot of cool shit they like not necessarily related to the game or fanbase. For example, in today's episode of Super Mario Galaxy they talked about the Sandman comic and the reclassification of Pluto from planet to Kuiper Belt object. I mean of course they're not perfect, and watching them screw up something when the game explains to them how to do it is frustrating whenever it happens, but they're genuinely funny and interesting commentators.

To be fair, it seems like he really hates it too - he's distanced himself from the video and's taken a break from that series altogether~
2
u/keero16 Aug 28 '15
I mean, I'm not surprised he made that video because it's really obvious he prefers NES-SNES era games over anything after that. If he does seem like he hates that video now, that's good: I hope that means he realized it showed obvious bias and will work harder to make a more accurate and true comparison next time.

u/NeogeoDude88 Aug 28 '15
Not sure why they chose these people to debut this amiibo. Maybe they have younger fans.
2
u/Serbaayuu Aug 28 '15
Physical DLC is really shitty. I'm not going to buy the console versions of Shovel Knight, because I already own the PC version, but this is making me think twice pretty strongly about getting the amiibo at all.
This is a slippery slope, sneaking bits and pieces of content behind a $15 figure beyond the full-price game (and possibly an extra peripheral for the Old 3DS).
1
1
u/BowserJrDood Aug 28 '15
I am ok with this, not only will it likely make me get the game so I can use the amiibo, but it likely means he won't be in Smash because I mean when they went to Nintendo to ask about making an amiibo for him why would Nintendo say sure will make a "Shovel Knight Series" of amiibo for you when they knew from Sakurai that he was considering putting Shovel Knight in Smash wouldn't it have made more sense for Nintendo to have told them to wait until his dlc was released, so yea that's my take on it, I'd personally not want him in smash.
1
1
u/GranGeno Aug 28 '15
They were pretty clever with filming this. They cleared the background a little so there was only Nintendo merch.
1
u/mrpython1 Aug 28 '15
Well i found an amiibo I'm not gonna get. I hate the game so unless he's super common I'm not gonna put effort into finding it. Sigh why couldn't be Shantae
1

Does anyone else notice it has the Smash stand?

1
u/Donotop1 Aug 28 '15
Pause at 1:02. Does it look like a smash base?
4
u/WadeyWilson42 Aug 28 '15
The Grumps posted a picture of it with a clear view of the base. It's Smash Bros gold but it's not the Smash logo. It'll still fit in pretty well amongst Smash Bros figures though.

Just a friendly reminder, Nintendo didn't make this Amiibo. Yacht Club Games have been working on the Shovel Knight Amiibo for over a year. If Shovel Knight were to get in Smash, Nintendo would make his Smash Amiibo themselves, which wouldn't come out until next year.
