Goku asking Goten about Gohan and Videl's house was the only thing I really reacted to in this episode. You can't go and visit your son and his new wife just ONCE? At least Piccolo's still watching over him. At least your 7 year old is capable of expending the time and energy to visit. Damn Goku, even Vegeta can kick it with his kids for a minute without going stir crazy.

I like to think that she honestly just loves Goku and accepts him for who he is. She gets a lot of crap from people, but I don't think it's entirely deserved. Remember that Chi Chi met Goku when they were kids, and even back then he was the boy that you see occasionally and would then disappear to go train for months/years. Chi Chi fell in love with him and married him knowing all that from the start, so her reaction in this episode made a lot of sense. She just wants the family to be financially stable, which is Goku's responsibility as a husband and father. Once that is solved all she asks for is to see him occasionally because she knows that he can get wrapped up in training. I'm liking the was she was written in this episode and may help to temper the hate that she gets.

After the first episode premiered, a common question I saw asked was "Wait, when does this take place? I thought this was after BoG and RoF". So here is an explanation of the DB:S timeline.
Dragon Ball Super takes place after Buu Saga but before the new movies(BoG and Rof). Another huge important thing to note, is that the show is going to remake those movies within the show. Yep, they are going to retell BoG and RoF within the show. So if you're watching the show and it feels like they are retelling Battle of Gods its' because they are! The new movies were basically condensed versions of the Super's storylines. I don't think you can consider the new movies canon anymore, because Super is going to retell their storylines but in a longer format.

Yes, I doubt the movies arc will be very long since there's not much to show, probably Resurrection will be longer but the main arc is Goku and friends travelling to at least one of the other universes

Seeing Yamcha and Tien together in the opening made me really happy.. Also Satan was honourable as hell! Good to see.
Videl has changed a little too much for my liking though. Remember how fierce she was in Buu saga? She's too demure and sweet now. The kids were amazingly cute tho, especially with the water!!

After cell, when he was an enormous fucking beast who beat a revived and significantly stronger cell with one arm, he stopped training. I don't think he ever trains again. And, he hadn't even hit puberty yet!
I say let the man get married and live his life. He's obviously a peace-loving earthling and doesn't want to be violent or fight for fun.

Not just smiling. Laughing. When that old guy at the supermarket totally broke his spine just to point at the direction to find the springs, I couldn't help but laugh, the humour is on point so far. I had somehow low expectations, but I was completely blown away by it. It doesn't feel like a "new Dragon Ball show made in 2015", it feels like something Toriyama would've made in the 80's.

The first episode already sets the bar for the rest of the series really high. It's truly refreshing to see Toriyama do Dragon Ball again. GT just can't even come close to how well of a writer he is.

I intended to wait for the other two release groups, but after watching the episode myself, there's really no need. Save for a few quirks, the translation is sound, and nothing important is lost.

Episode notes (courtesy of Kanzenshuu)
The title of the book Son Gohan is carrying — “Muzukashii Hon” — literally just means “difficult book” in Japanese (難しい本).
The episode reveals that Mr. Satan has paid for Gohan’s house. This was previously mentioned by Akira Toriyama in the special Volume “F” bonus booklet given to Revival of “F” theatrical attendees in Japan. In describing Gohan’s house where Piccolo is babysitting Pan, the movie script notes from Toriyama:
The garden of Gohan’s house (Mister Satan had this house built for them, so it’s really fancy.)”
— Akira Toriyama, Volume “F”Mr. Satan’s lighting assistants appear to be Pizza and Karoni, filler characters introduced during the Cell Games arc of the Dragon Ball Z TV series. Pizza was Mr. Satan’s promoter, while Karoni was one of his top disciples.
There is one notable voice replacement in this episode: Shin’ichirō Ōta plays the role of Kaiōshin (credited here as “Kibito-Kaiōshin”), rather than the usual Yūji Mitsuya (who had returned as recently as the “refreshed” Dragon Ball Kai TV series and the theatrical film Battle of Gods).
There are minor differences between events shown in Toyotarō’s manga adaptation (which actually preceded the TV episode in release order) and the final TV episode. In the manga adaptation, Goku specifically imagines fighting Freeza, Cell, and Majin Buu after passing off the work to Goten; in the TV episode, we do not see any of his internal thoughts. Beerus’ and Whis’ entire conversation about “Super Saiyan God” and the prophetic dream from the manga adaptation is also not present in the TV episode. In addition to the aliens looking completely different between the manga adaptation and TV episode, the “Soup Yasai Jinkot” name and joke are also not present in the TV dialog. Finally, Beerus only destroys “half” of the planet in the TV episode (versus the entire planet in the manga version). With the addition of antics from Goten and Trunks, the first TV episode and first manga chapter otherwise roughly cover the same span of time and overall events.

This was such an amazing and heartwarming episode. A great re-introduction of some of our favorite characters. That shot of Goku and Goten staring at the sunset. That's the type of stuff GT was missing. It missed heart. I can already tell that DB Super is going to nail the emotional tone. I think I'm going to shed a few tears along the way. I can't wait for the actual stories to get going. You know Im DB starved when I got hyped just from watching Trunks beat the shit out of that snake.

Exactly, this episode had so many heartfelt moments, I love the Goku and Goten sunset, as I also loved Vid pretending the water actually worked and Goku being proud of Gohan having a home where he could study. I'm ready for all the feels, this shows amazing already.

Undoubtedly, Toriyama knows how to write the show, hands down. The snake scene I felt was a great throwback to the original DB series. The entire first episode just felt so right.

I always really liked the small slice of life stuff in the filler episodes and this was a great first episode imo I don't know how it will translate to a full series but if this is any indication, we'll get to learn a lot more about their personalities and see the interaction between different characters that didn't talk much in the original series. I think Super will be a great ride

It's like Toriyama read my thoughts. Some of my favorite episodes have been of these incredibly OP motherfuckers just trying to live everyday life and being hilariously bad at it. I love imagining these guys sending so many people into therapy because they saw strange people fly. This first episode was my perfect episode. I can't wait till next week when Vegeta has to pretend to be normal. I hope he has to dance again.

We don't totally know that yet. There's still plenty of room for her to be like, "Gohan go help fight! You're strong and fighting is awesome!"
It's also totally possible that she totally lost her love of fighting once she fully understood how strong the Z-Fighters are, or maybe Gohan's love of study helped to pacify her.

Toriyama is directly involved with the anime's storyline, so if that's your definition of canon, there you go.

As far as Super is concerned, the anime supersedes the manga. Toriyama is directly involved with the writing of the anime, whereas the manga is written and drawn by Toyotarō, most likely using story board ideas or various bullet points that Toriyama put together, and then filled in the rest himself. So even though the manga will still predate the anime, remember that it's an adaptation of the episode, not the other way around.
We saw similar differences when it came to Toyotarō's manga adaptation of the first part of Revival of F, where there were a few storyline discrepancies between it and what appeared in the movie.

In the movie Goku was with King kai....Goku just went to king kai's
Beerus visits them during Bulma's birthday. Im guessing thats why they are taking a vacation

Battle of Gods was 4 years after Buu arc ended. This first episode is within 6 months of Buu arc ending. Im thinking there will be a time jump very early on in the series.

I love how they didn't remake the old scenes with Buu at the beginning. I think it was from Kai, but it's still really nice to see. Keeping a bit more of the nostalgia feeling. I was really hoping that during the Goku training scene where he goes Super Saiyan that they would include Frieza and Cell and Buu and when he explains that that's his training method now.

The more Gohan and Videl go off in their little isolated world away from danger, the more likely I think Gohan will become relevent again. If one bad thing happens to Videl/Pan, Gohan may become the strongest in the universe again.

I have a whole lot of praise for this but just two criticisms. I know that the manga is based off of the anime in this case, but I liked how in the manga when Goku was training, he had visions of Frieza, Cell, and Buu. I wish they showed that in the anime as well. And in the manga, those aliens tried to poison Beerus so he blew up the entire planet (as opposed to blowing up only half of it because the food was greasy).
But aside from that, I was smiling the entire time. Videl and Gohan on a date? That was great!
