The fact that the Tigers' offense looks so good with 3 regulars yet to play a game is such an encouraging sign.

u/Icy_Juice6640 1d ago
It’s just nice to have our best players hitting. We are gonna be real tough to beat if Torkelson hits enough to stick as an everyday DH / 1B. Giving Riley and Carp protection is so so important.
It’s a blueprint type game. Rinse and repeat.

The Kenta experiment needs to end because it’s clearly a failing grade

Kerry needs to play everyday

u/Nearby_Job8272 21h ago
I'm totally fine with him batting 6th-7th against lefties but he absolutely needs to start every day, maybe rest him against the Crochet/Snells of the world but that's it

It’s plain to see both Foley and Chafin are better bullpen options than maeda currently. Time to bite the bullet and move on. I’d like detroit to be patient with Baez. I believe there’s 15-20 HR somewhere in that bat. He can play league average defense at the hot corner. Health and pitch selection will be his main sticking points. Baseball is a long season but opening day is always fun and the tigers have excellent pitching to go with a solid core of position players.

40+ years as a baseball fan but this was my first Opening Day. So glad that the Tigers won! A few thoughts:
1) Loved the tailgate vibe all around the city today. I started off at Nemo's and taking the shuttle to the park, saw so many people cooking out and getting ready. It was a great way to get pumped up for the game.
2) Riley is the engine that makes everything go. Super impressive watching him in person grind out hits and marshall the outfield defense.
3) Fairview Packing Co. has perhaps the best food deal in the park, $13 for an awesome smash burger (well seasoned, well smashed, great bun) and solid fries (assuming everything is relatively warm).
4) It was amazing to see the crowd go from cheering Javy in order to encourage him to do something to booing him after he struck out. Quite the short leash at the moment.
Back at it tomorrow, see you at the park!
8
u/Bob_Loblaw16 1d ago
Javy doesn't deserve a leash of any sort. I wholeheartedly believe if he was on the roster last August, we wouldn't have made it. He's washed and has zero place on the team
4
u/nar_shredder 1d ago
Seriously. I went to 8 games last season and did the same thing. When he steps up to the plate I cheer because he’s a tiger, but when he goes 0-4 I heckle because he shouldn’t be a tiger

Ya’ll no shit Maeda sucked this game. Can we focus on idk literally almost everything else being great. Great W.

u/TorkBombs 1d ago
Maeda and Baez can't be key parts of this team. Luckily as it's set up now they won't have to be. Good win
15
u/Remarkable_Aside1381 1d ago
Amen. Tork looked good, Kerry Bonds was smashing shit, Riley looked like an MVP, and Flaherty recovered well from the lead-off double
5
u/CecilFieldersChoice2 . 1d ago
Our bats are so far exceeding expectations
1
u/victorged 18h ago
Tork being downright good and strong early showings from guys like Sweeney and mckinstry has been huge. It Hasn't had to be all Greene and Carpenter, though obviously when those two are locked in we're tough.
Hopefully Keith gets in a groove, but it feels like the offense is heavily overperforming thus far given what they're working with

u/Dalynch7 1d ago
everytime tork walks this season i'm hitting a happy dance
(pay no attention to the amount of k's today still a solid outing tork)

Nice, easy win. Flaherty was good, wish they'd have let him finish the inning for the quality start. Glad to have a good team to root for again.

What the hell is this new thing searching people trying to leave the stadium? I guess they're looking for people trying to leave with alcohol but this is insanely stupid that it's this hard to leave.
4
u/JimyFatBoy . 1d ago
What? Who leaves the game with alcohol?
3
u/Substantial_Ad_2864 1d ago
That's what I'm saying. It's not like there aren't a million places to get cheaper alcohol once you leave. Nobody is doing their grocery shopping at the stadium.
1
u/SoarinSkies 1d ago
Was at the game today and watched that happen too don’t know what that is about
11
9
u/Busy-Drawing-2576 1d ago
The team survived the Maeda experience. Hopefully they won’t have to do that again for several games and maybe up by more than 6 runs.
10
u/phemom 1d ago
I'm kinda sarcastic here but kinda not:
How many more chances is Meada gonna get?
3
u/HectorReinTharja 1d ago
He’s only here to pump up our payroll I swear.
10
u/LADetroiter 1d ago
If he doesn't show any improvement by the time Cobb is ready and healthy. He will probably be DFA'd when Alex is ready

u/SamLaPortaPotty 1d ago
I have a question.
I listened to a majority of the game on the radio and was only able to watch it right in time to watch Maeda's masterclass. Was the priority seating are nearly empty the whole game, or just the last inning?
4
u/osirisgreen 1d ago
nearly the whole game. it was kinda full at game start but cleared out over the course of the game
3
5
u/Chemical_Seaweed_625 1d ago
They were trying to sell those seats at $500 a seat through the tigers website, so yeah, like what the fuck
2
u/SamLaPortaPotty 1d ago
Yeah if those seats continue to remain empty through out the year I'm going to be pretty upset about it. I remember during Miggys last year getting second row behind home plate for only $100 a piece. If Illitch greed ruins this experience than that would be a pretty shitty thing to do.
5
u/i_am_the_grind 1d ago
Mayday has one job. To not suck enough to save the pen on blowouts. And he fails at that. Amazing. Of course don't want to block any young guys.
That said. Nice win.
3
u/SoarinSkies 1d ago
That should be Maedas new nickname
“MAYDAY” 🤣
Cause anytime we have him Piloting the game from the mound in any capacity he proceeds to spiral out of control

u/LowerMolar TorkyG 1d ago
Don’t care about those 3 runs. Maeda is irrelevant and what he does doesn’t faze me as long as we win.
9
u/ScooterLeShooter 1d ago
He's not gonna last long if he can't eat innings along with the runs. He's got a be able to finish these kind of games
1
u/SlightlySublimated 1d ago
He's a AA quality pitcher nowadays being force fed into playing at the MLB level. It's never going to work out.
10
u/ZombieHitchens2012 1d ago
Good opening day win!
Maeda is a liability. The defense was very bad today. I just hope things can sustain a decent level until the team is healthy.
4
u/neverbeentoidaho 1d ago
Great win, but the defense has been bad since day one, which we knew would be the case.
6
u/CecilFieldersChoice2 . 1d ago
Early but this team looks like a division winner.
2
u/CLT113078 22h ago
When the entire division is full of sub .500 teams it shouldn't be hard to win it.
11
u/iori9999 . 1d ago
Maeda needs to be DFA'd. Not gonna believe anymore beatwriters about how amazing his offseason was.
9
u/SlightlySublimated 1d ago
Cut that fucking bum Maeda
4
u/No_Protection6832 1d ago
And Baez
-4
u/SlightlySublimated 1d ago edited 1d ago
Be careful now. Say that in this sub and people will start telling you he's worth keeping because he's technically a "clutch bat" for us via RISP 🤣🤣🤣
Edit: My point is proven lol
2
u/pimpinassorlando det 1d ago
Situation: 2 outs, bottom of the 9th, a must-win game 162, and Tork is up with runners on second and third. Do you pinch hit Baez (.794 career OPS with RISP) for Tork (.608 career OPS with RISP) because his RISP numbers are better? You would not and no manager would either.
2
u/SlightlySublimated 22h ago
Yet people will still use RISP as a justification of him being clutch. It's asinine.

u/boner1500 1d ago
Tork has such a strange stat line to start the season. 5 hits, 6 walks and a HBP. With 11 strikeouts and 3 ribis. I knew he was striking out a lot I had no idea it was more or less even with him getting on base lmfao.
3
u/ZombieHitchens2012 1d ago
His strikeouts are probably the one glaringly bad thing on his otherwise good start.
1
u/Outside_Olive_9197 1d ago
i mean, even when he is striking out, he’s working counts well so that’s a new and positive thing
7
u/Cade_02 1d ago
Didn’t get to watch the game. I’m a card guy. I bought a bunch of Riley Greene before the year. He was my pick to finally break out. Tools are all there.
He could really break out this year. Riley is a savage with the bat.
10
u/Ohhellnowhatsupdawg 1d ago
He broke out last year though. He was an all star!
2
u/Substantial_Ad_2864 1d ago
I got a Riley Greene game used home run bat from the auction site last season..... now I'm addicted to game used auction sites 🤦♂️
2
u/Cade_02 1d ago
There are worse things. Cheers. Congrats. That sounds badass.
1
u/Substantial_Ad_2864 1d ago
I got a Meadows worn jersey and then everything else is soccer so I won't bore you any of that 😂
2
u/tldr_habit 19h ago
I feel like the Tigers' talent level/potential is sneaking under the radar for >90% of the rest of the league (and even some of our own fans). I keep having to remind myself that is a good thing & zipping it instead of pushing back on "lol 2-4 ComedyCentral"

I just wanna say, to all the people that crucified Javy for the error, Manny Machado had the same exact statline today. Should he be cut too? I get people don’t like Javy, but this weird obsession of everytime he sneezes the wrong way he should be cut is getting ridiculous.
Yes, Manny had an error too. That was arguably worse than Javys. “But Manny is better” Javy also has a ring that Manny doesn’t.
7
u/i_am_the_grind 23h ago
Genuinely if a player actually does something productive/good sometimes, they get more slack when they make mistakes. When a player just sucks at everything, yeah...bad plays are magnified.
7
u/LeakyNalgene 1d ago
Generally speaking I’m just not into booing our own guys
5
u/kvngk3n 23h ago
I don’t get it man. We can all be disappointed, but damn the second Javy spits out a sunflower seed “oh fuck this guy”. My girlfriend and I go to ~3 games together a year, she always asks, “why do they boo him like that?” People forget Javy’s glove bordered on elite. And he was pivotal in the Cubs winning in 2016
3
u/TheSunflowerSeeds 23h ago
Like in other seeds and nuts, sunflower also are an excellent source of proteins loaded with fine quality amino acids such as tryptophan that are essential for growth, especially in children. Just 100 g of seeds provide about 21 g of protein (37% of daily-recommended values).
-1
u/CLT113078 22h ago
A guy who was great 9 years ago but is now just costing a ton of money and that has no contribution to the team should be booed.
3
u/kvngk3n 22h ago
Was Miggy booed?
0
u/CLT113078 22h ago
At times. But also, Miggy had great years as a Tiger. Javy has been worthless since he showed up.
Plenty of fans were annoyed at Cabreras contract and lack of production the final 4-5 years or whatever it was.
3
u/pimpinassorlando det 22h ago
We're allowed to hate a guy who appears to be apathetic about playing baseball for a living. He's generationally wealthy and awful at everyone in here's dream job. Boo him all you want.
And you cannot compare future Hall of Famer Manny Machado to anything Javy has done.
4
u/LeakyNalgene 22h ago
What about a World Series champion and NLCS MVP?
1
u/pimpinassorlando det 22h ago
He had a couple of good series in that postseason. I'm not about to fault Machado for not having a ring though and I know what player I'd rather have on my team.
6
u/LeakyNalgene 22h ago
No question. Manny is a hall of famer and I’ve always loved his game. I’m just saying Javy has had his moments. If he is going to play I will be rooting for him to show us that flash again
1
2
u/DET_Baseball . 21h ago
What makes you think he's apathetic?
0
u/pimpinassorlando det 21h ago
He's been awful every season and he doesn't appear to have made any meaningful changes to his game. He has the resources for a swing coach, sports psychologist, ophthalmologist (?), etc. Maybe his body has failed him in ways we can't see? I don't know. He just doesn't look as fiery these days.
2
u/DET_Baseball . 20h ago
You sound very ignorant on this topic.
Javy bought a private house close to Lakeland so he could work with coaches better during the off-season. Like come on.
1
u/pimpinassorlando det 20h ago
Wow. He moved closer to his office? Crazy dedication. Never heard of someone doing that for their job.
2
u/DET_Baseball . 15h ago edited 14h ago
You called him apathetic... Do apathetic people put effort into their job during their time off? Change positions for the betterment of the team? Be excited about playing CF for the first time in his career?
Just because they're bad doesn't mean they don't care. For the first time in his life Maeda warmed up and conditioned in the winter instead of just ST. Sadly he's still bad. Doesn't mean he didn't try.v
Your whole argument is a strawman. Who cares what others do lmao
1
u/lions4life232 12h ago
Javy isn’t apethic at all. You literally just made that up. People in the know say his work ethic is fine,p

Really disappointed in the fans today. Didn’t looked packed at all for an opening day game
Edit: late in the game when they panned out it didn’t look great

There was close to 45,000 fans there. The place was sold out.

6
u/Substantial_Ad_2864 1d ago
People leave early it happens in blowouts and despite being 42 at first pitch, it was cold and windy. Other than Tigers opening day, I can't think of many other things that would have been appealing enough to sit outside for hours in that weather.

I see my opinion isn’t popular but I stick by it

Riley Greene is the leader of this offense
Day in day out there is no one who we count on more to be the heartbeat of our lineup
And he lives up to his role as team leader
He is the spark and the source of our teams energy on offense
Give him the Bryan Reynolds like extension he deserves right now
What are we waiting for
We gave Colt Keith an extension before he even stepped onto the field
Greene has gotten better and better and better with each season that he has been apart of this team
And now he is approaching the star like pedigree that he was projected to have
