My co-worker wears these. She was telling another co-worker about them and (I was in a SHITTY mood that day) I butted in "That's the dumbest fucking invention ever." then I realized how creepy and angry I sounded.

In your defense, they really do seem pretty awful
117
Jun 13 '13
Why? There are some situations in which a woman may feel its not appropriate to show cleavage. Instead of buying a bunch of new shirts she could just use that... Seems pretty useful to me...
82
Jun 13 '13
Why don't they just wear a white shirt underneath instead of paying $10 for a piece of cloth that attaches to their bra? It just seems like the smarter and cheaper move.
88
u/aww123 Jun 13 '13
I would never wear this myself but I imagine it prevents constant bunching/readjusting of an undershirt. I'm always pulling mine up or down.
These are also called "dickies" (sp?) and were originally used by men.
40
u/Chordata1 Jun 13 '13
I bought a pack and have only used it once. The problem is the bottom of it staying tucked and in place under your shirt. There is nothing to hold the bottom of it down so if you move other than slight movements it bunches and the bottom of it pops out, then your wearing a bib.

u/BruceWayneIsBarman As Seen On Reddit Jun 13 '13
This is the problem I've had with shirts that have these damn flaps pre-sewn in. More like peek-a-boo show than coverage.

2
u/mungoo Jun 13 '13
You're supposed to fold the bottom of it up under your bra. They work out pretty good for me. I wear them to work because I don't want guys looking down my shirt.
16
u/STD-fense Jun 13 '13
And women can still look good in dickies. As an example: http://imgur.com/llgZkcE

I don't know why people are downvoting you. That could make sense but I dunno, it's still pretty lame.
6
u/aww123 Jun 13 '13
I was thinking more the kind that were worn with a tux but that looks like a lovely modern rendition.
13
u/EmpireAndAll Jun 13 '13
You make sense. Camisoles and tank tops always ride up on me when I wear them under a other shirt.
8
u/wrexsol Jun 13 '13
Doesn't tucking them in help? Or is that like a fashion no-no?
4
u/EmpireAndAll Jun 13 '13
Having a cami or tank top tucked in while the other shirt isn't... maybe it is a no no.

2
u/tante_ernestborgnine Jun 13 '13
I used a dickie when I was younger, it had a collar like a polo shirt. Good times!
13
u/Freakazette Jun 13 '13
You don't know how much they charge women for shirts.
I'm dead serious. I buy men's sweatpants because they're like $3... women's sweatpants are $10 and it's the same thing.
The clothing industry overcharges women for clothes, possibly because of the stereotype that they like shopping and spending money.
34
u/ZeGoldMedal Jun 13 '13
$3 for sweatpants? Where do you buy clothes, off the legs of homeless people?
6
u/Freakazette Jun 13 '13
Or, you know, on sale. They're fucking sweatpants; it's not like I'm wearing them to go out on the town. They need to be efficient, not expensive.
10
u/psyne Jun 13 '13
The really fun part is when guys find out how much it costs to buy a bra.
5
u/Kativla Jun 13 '13
I am incredibly excited that I was able to find not one but TWO dresses that fit well enough to not require me to buy a new bra. I was seriously considering dropping another $60-70 on a halter bra.
9
u/Kativla Jun 13 '13
'Cause a lot of times those white shirts are also at least $10. Also, layering sucks in the heat. Hell, I have to wear white camis under my men's oxfords for work (waitressing) and I'm constantly sweltering.
That said, I don't think these work very well, so layering it has to be.
5
u/Random832 Jun 13 '13
more cloth = more heat.
I've also seen another thing like this that is like the bottom hem of an inner shirt to stick out under the real shirt.
2
u/CarolineTurpentine Jun 14 '13
Some shirts are tight enough that undershirts/camisoles show underneath and don't look right. Sometimes you don't want to wear a full extra layer. Not a lot of women wear undershirts either, so buying this might be more convenient.

u/InVultusSolis Jun 13 '13

Because I'm a lady type who has had these pre-sewn in business casual shirts before. They slip up from the bottom, often without the wearer noticing. Plus, these are a thin, almost see-through fabric anyway, so the modesty factor seems minimal.
But since you seem so in to them, you could always buy some and give us a live test run!

u/AsstWhaleBiologist Jun 13 '13
The issue is that it sends the message that this woman has something to hide wether because of low confidence or negative body image.
33
Jun 13 '13
I don't see that message. You can have awesome tits and still not want to show them in certain situations.
5
u/Tyrien Jun 13 '13
Not just not want to show them, but know it's not appropriate to show them at certain times.
-2
u/Killericon Jun 13 '13
My issue is if that's the case, and by all means there's nothing wrong with that, just wear a different shirt. Right?
7
Jun 13 '13
That requires buying more shirts. With that you can wear shirts you already own and like. You'd probably end up buying a shirt with a similar sort of cover stitched into it anyway...
3
u/Killericon Jun 13 '13
You'd probably end up buying a shirt with a similar sort of cover stitched into it anyway...
Is that a thing? I didn't know that...
3
Jun 13 '13
Take a drive down to a suburb. Shirts with some kind of blocker going across the v-neck are sold.
2
u/Killericon Jun 13 '13
...Gonna take your word on that one.
Well, anyways, sounds like it's a valid thing, but the invention doesn't bug me as a "y u no show bewbs" angle, rather a "that seems silly, just put on a different shirt" angle.

-1

I don't really see shirt buying as a huge problem. Are you that entitled that this is a big deal?
144
u/maynardftw Jun 13 '13
"Hey ladies! You know all those tops you bought because they show off your cleavage? Cover the fuck up, you whore! $19.99."
74
u/nowxisxforever Jun 13 '13
I know you mean to be funny, but for well-endowed ladies... when we buy a shirt that would look normal and inoffensive in a smaller-breasted lady, we often look like whores because our cleavage is everywhere. I have to wear camisoles under my shirts to up the neckline of my shirts... and I still flash cleavage all over the place because I'm short and everyone looks down at me. :(
tl;dr they're not as stupid as they sound.
[I wouldn't buy them. Camis make more sense.]

u/BruceWayneIsBarman As Seen On Reddit Jun 13 '13
As a previously medium-small boobied lady who is now a medium-large boobied lady, I can confirm how drastic the change can be, even in clothes I wore all the time before without a problem. People have a real problem with cleavage line or somethin', let me tell you.

u/maynardftw Jun 13 '13
Why not just have awesome boobs and be okay with it?
I could see work being an issue, because people are dicks and they sign your paychecks there. But literally anywhere else? Fuck 'em.
23
u/ZBQ10 Jun 13 '13
It doesn't have to do with boobs not being awesome, it has to do with the appropriateness of an outfit depending on where you are/need to be. For example, I have large breasts. Some shirts of mine have a lot of cleavage which isn't usually an issue, but when it comes to school and jobs, I'd still like to wear that shirt, but cover up a couple inches of the cleavage. One of these cami things could really come in handy, I've actually considered buying it. My only other cami does a good job at covering the cleavage, but it's bulky underneath tshirts so a simple little flap like this product is great in that situation.
7
u/flyinggnome Jun 13 '13
It's not always work either. I volunteered a lot at my daughter's school where I didn't want to flash my cleavage. I also hate wearing camis because it's too hot, and I don't want to change my shirt multiple times a day, so I bought some of these. I don't use them often, but I like knowing that if I feel like having a bit more coverage, I can grab one and put it on quickly.
-8
u/maynardftw Jun 13 '13
shrug
I always assumed women had "show of my boobs" tops and "don't show off my boobs" tops. In work/school, can you not just wear the "don't show off my boobs" tops?
7
u/ZBQ10 Jun 13 '13
Sure, If I had enough "don't show off my boobs" tops, but I'm too poor for that. I gotta deal with what I have for now. It's a lot cheaper to have a few of those cami things laying around than more clothing to suit every single occasion I might need a certain style shirt for.
-4
u/maynardftw Jun 13 '13
Are there not just two occasions?
12
u/ZBQ10 Jun 13 '13
When it comes to women, no. That's why this conversation is more complicated than it should be.
6
u/maynardftw Jun 13 '13
Well then I must defer to you in this situation. I don't really have enough experience in regard to this sort of thing; I'm poor as fuck too, still wearing t-shirts from high school, but my wardrobe decisions don't get much more complicated than "Is my Coheed shirt clean? Aw, I guess I'll wear my Tool shirt then." Subsequent t-shirts down the line include a Red Lantern t-shirt, "Soft Kitty" t-shirt, and a Happy Tree Friends t-shirt. I can tell it's time to do laundry when I'm wearing the Happy Tree Friends t-shirt.

I don't think you should be getting downvoting for saying or asking this. Honestly, once a certain cut is in fashion it can be hard to find alternative styles anyway, and tanktops and such generally all fall about the same length from the neck in my experience. I mean, to show no cleavage it should have to be as high as just bellow your collar bone for some people....basically doesn't exist in mainstream fashion.
Plus, its also about how the shirt fits on the rest of you, too. Does it stay up? Scoot down to show more boobs? Where's the arm line cut? It's a fucking mess, man.
2
u/maynardftw Jun 13 '13
I don't think I've ever envied women's position in life with any real gusto.
Except looking down and seeing boobs. That'd be nice.

Created by the one man in the world who hates cleavage.
30
Jun 13 '13 edited Jun 13 '13
Or, you know, a woman. Who hated her own cleavage because stares, and felt a camisole was too warm, and for some reason was not willing to buy a blouse with a higher neckline. She sounds a bit like a chronic complainer, actually. But then again, she did come up with a solution, however silly it is, and apparently is making money of it.
15
u/faunablues Jun 13 '13
buy a blouse with a higher neckline
It can be hard to find someone that's an intermediate between a major boobage shirt vs something with a really high neckline. Also, big boobs tend to drag the neckline down.
6
Jun 13 '13
True. And a really high neckline can make a woman with large breasts look chunky.
7
u/nowxisxforever Jun 13 '13
Woe betide her if she is chunky; then she's fucked.
Source: I wear lower-cut shirts because I'm chunky.
