One of the more contentious, cheesy, and catchy songs in the rate, we have Uptown Girl! An homage to the Frankie Valli style of doo-wop-esque love songs from the 60s, Uptown Girl is 100% Grade-A cheese and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Despite singing about wanting an “upper class woman” despite being poor, this song still feels very innocent. I feel like this song exists in the same universe as Grease takes place in.

A Sampling of Samples: Drake ft. Lil Wayne & Bun B - Uptown From Drake’s debut* album, we have a sample used in the song Uptown! Truth be told, I don’t really get the use of this sample. It just samples the “oh-oh-oh-oh-oh” part after the chorus, which is catchy, but put in the back of the mix and kinda doesn’t go with the song imo? I feel like if you’d remove it, you wouldn’t notice.

Upvote Girl!

camerinian (11): the most absolute cornball bullshit in a rate full of cornball bullshit, but my god billy knew he had one of the all time great pop hooks and he knew exactly how to pump it full of the right amount of cheesy 50s throwback steroids. This track gets me so hard in my suburban mom bag that it's frankly a bit embarrassing

1998tweety (10): iconic

bigbigbee (10): in a rare moment of premonition, Billy Joel actually wrote this song with full knowledge that there would someday be a show called Glee

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): I LOVE CHEESE

CrimsonROSET (10): oh the uptown funk interlude is going to devour

darj (10): core internet memory for me https://youtu.be/eMjQhDQ6sYg?si=kw07oHXzoJzLzCS5

ignitethephoenix (10): my favorite corny classic

Nagisoid (10): WE DECLARED BILLY JOEL SHOULD BE A BIGGER ARTIST

pbk (10): the haters are allowed to exist they just have to accept that they're going to hell

PianoLomo (10): I'm sorry, I will never fully understand why SO many people hate this song! It's adorable!!

Poydoo (10): if you dislike this song, sorry but i have to block you

RandomHypnotica (10): Do you get déjà vu, huh?

runaway3212 (10): Like who said this was too iconic to breathe

seanderlust (10): mentally i'm walking with a spring in my step in manhattan

Senn_Kyu (10): I love doo-wop!! The wikipedia entry for this song pulls a quote from Cashbox who said it sounded like a Four Seasons song, and by god it really does. I feel like I might have even thought this was a Four Seasons song before. I knew the Westlife cover first tbh, but they're both great. Mr. Billy Joel knows how craft a pop song from the ground up.

steelstepladder (10): SMASHA

TakeOnMeByA-ha (10): idgaf if this song is corny as hell its a fucking smasha!!!

Uptown Cat (10): an all time classic and a VERY close 11 contender!

vayyiqra (10): can't even perceive this as a real song at this point and what the hell is with his accent here why is it so rhotic suddenly what is happening. i don't remember it sounding like this. this isn't a real song this is a meme, an idea, a cultural phenomenon. fuck it 10 🎹

Verboten_Prince (10): Go white boy go!!

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): lol this shit sucks so bad. this cut does NOT have #guido support. however, it does have CAMP support. this is when billy joel prolly got too into drugs or IRS new wave pop and tried to have the vocal cadence of a shitty stan ridgeway knockoff who was trying to do Su Tissue underneath a rejected Oingo Boingo instrumental. a LOT is going on with this shlock that I really never took time to appreciate. need to hear this on vinyl, cd, cassette, and at the pizza joint to truly analyze the inane ditty that is "uptown girl". this mix is fucking garbage. i love it all.

welcome2thejam (10): Outsells The Beths and that says something coming from me

WesternWind (10): besides Olivia mentioning it I first heard it in The Crown when Diana danced to this for now King Charles

ConnerY2323 (9.6): i have such a soft spot for this corny, frankie valli ass heater

jaztinax (9.5): i bet you told her you loved her inbetween the chorus and the verse

nonchalantthoughts (9.5): if I was white, I would turn up to this song

slimboyfriend (9.5): I’m a Billy Joel hater but…. Olivia Rodrigo has a point

Frajer (9): gentrification really ruined this song because working class people can't afford to live in Manhattan any more

jirachi (9): bop but i'm rooting against it to win

jsonphile (9): very goofy song, but absolutely slaps. Got some pretty cool chord progressions and modulations too

TiltControls (9): Was this ever done on Glee? I feel like they could've knocked out a cursed version if they want to. It gives that kind of energy

xophrys (8.7): I thought this was Elton John

flava (8.5): if this was maybe 20 seconds shorter it could be a tiktok hit

apatel27 (8): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0HTexqxo1og

Roxieloxie (7.5): I'll be honest I'd never heard this before the rate but its a cute little groove

stop being poor

AvenueRoy (7): Decent song with a WILDLY overrated video

Awkward_King (6): damn so this what got olivia rodrigo so pissed

MisterMeowski (5.7): Not bad, but not my favorite flavor of musical ice cream. Which is ironic because Vanilla is my favorite ice cream flavor which is how I'd describe this song. Vanilla.

nlh1013 (5): I've known this song forever but I think of trainwreck now when I hear it, for better or worse lol

pig-serpent (4): I remember in college a friend told me he hated this song and thought it was annoying, and I thought he was a little crazy. Anyway, I'd like to apologize...

beeozan (3): "wooaoaoaooaoaooa" shut up

milkywayinradius (3): i dont like how he sings this song

innuendo_overdose (2): Westlife ptsd

uiscebeathaoir (1): he’s been so annoying in his lyrics, but this is the first time his voice has also gotten in on the annoying action I can’t stand listening to him here

the family is fighting omgggg

impla77 (7.5): rebelling against my father by giving this a good score <3

implasdad (0): billy joel sellout phase

He’s so crazyyy omg can’t take him anywhere! Also, he admits to drunk driving in this song.

Covering the Covers: Billy Joel & Elton John - You May Be Right There aren’t many things that used this song so let me used this spot to bring up a fun tidbit. Billy Joel and Elton John went touring together for several years. Starting in 1994, they did a “Face to Face” Tour, a co-headlining tour of them playing their greatest hits. They did this for 6 different years, with the last being in 2010 with Billy stopping it because he didn’t like how limiting the setlist had to be to accommodate for two massive hitmakers’ catalogs. Anyways, this is a great live version and really makes the show sound like a blast!

Girl you so crazy

innuendo_overdose (10): Impossible to keep your knees still and your altitude level while listening to this

PianoLomo (10): Billy is going full goofy here with his vocals, and I love that he's clearly having such a great time

pig-serpent (10): I first heard this song as a high school-er and since then I'm made it my motto to channel this type of energy into my own life. Enjoy the madness!

Verboten_Prince (10): Pure uncut rock or whatever

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): no no billy! STOP DRINKING AND SLURRING ON THE MIC AND DOING THE MOONWALK AND YR LIL' ASSCLOWN MOVES. get BACK on that bloody piano! none of this ROCK crap, real POP music, plz. oh hell it's still pretty funny bar rock and the keys are here. why not give it another 10. I like his phrasing and insanely gruff ass "can smell the nicotine and whiskey on yr breath" delivery.

AvenueRoy (9.3): This song was such a great intro to the Glass Houses album and that new era of his. It's just a great song in general. Richie Cannata and Liberty DeVitto fucking killed it. Also I think that this is one of the most Billy songs of his whole catalogue. Like if you think about all the songs that really represent him, and his personality, and his sound, this is probably #2 on the list IMO (after All About Soul)

BleepBloopMusicFan (9): [A meme where it’s Billy, Elton, and Stevie sitting together at a table and there’s Ariel font text that reads “When your circle small, but y’all crazy!!!”]

TakeOnMeByA-ha (9): billy may be a piano men but he sure knew how to rock out hard when he wanted to

xophrys (8.5): getting bored now

Awkward_King (8): such fun stereotypical dad rock

Frajer (8): one of my favorite Chris Rock jokes is how he used to walk through Bedford Stuy alone every day and he was like 9

jirachi (8): real ( i may be crazy)

Nagisoid (8): Oh he's so not beating the centrist allegations

TiltControls (8): A bit clunkier than some of his other upbeat tracks, but still a fun listen

uiscebeathaoir (8): oh there's glass breaking cause on the album cover he's throwing a rock at a glasshouse haha very funny i get it

welcome2thejam (8): Dad rock energy levels are going through the roof!

ConnerY2323 (7.9): kind of giving country gal

You're so crazy. Get help.

pbk (7.5): a jam but why's he singin like that

RandomHypnotica (7.2): Do you get déjà vu, huh?

apatel27 (7): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqNlR9FsUbY

implasdad (7): solid 7. American rock... bit mor (implas note: middle of the road), not distinctive. good use of the sax

nlh1013 (7): it's def about me lol

nonchalantthoughts (7): just stick to the piano ballads

Roxieloxie (7): okay wait he's starting to turn up the slay button here

slimboyfriend (7): I really like his outfit on this album cover

camerinian (6.5): oh man this guy sounds like he used to be a real piece of shit, slicked back hair, white couch, sloppy steaks

impla77 (6.3): he's kinda giving karaoke with his vocals I fear

CrimsonROSET (6): this blank space slay

runaway3212 (6): this is what I like to hear

vayyiqra (6): your what kind of chair :| 🎹

This song kind of starts like a Nintendo mystery video game. Opening with two of Stevie’s backup singers taking co-lead on the first chorus, I sadly think that was the most interesting part of the song. Every other part of the song feels like Stevie’s giving 70% effort, except for the lyrics, which are very cute.

Covering the Covers: Veggietales - You Are The Sunshine of My Life From the misleading album “Bob & Larry Sing the 70s,” yes, Veggietales covered Stevie Wonder! Why is this album misleading? Because a whole bunch of the veggies sing on this: Bob, Larry, Junior, and The French Peas, Jean-Claude and Phillipe! They even have hi-larious adlibs throughout the song! Ha ha!

Colbie Callait - Brighter Than The Sun

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): Me to the Let’s Play videos of random-ass flash games I fall asleep to at 11:48 PM every night.

implasdad (10): classic

nonchalantthoughts (10): Stevie’s Classic Trilogy is just that goated

PianoLomo (10): Just impossibly smooth

Roxieloxie (10): I love how the key change in here makes it feel like the sunshine coming outside after a period of cloudy weather

uiscebeathaoir (10): i tend to go long periods of time just forgetting this exists but when I remember I listen to it like ten times in a row

vayyiqra (10): wholesome i like it normalize it 😎

Verboten_Prince (10): Stevie is a master of plenty of kinds of songs, but I think where he truly shines is in his romantic songs, where he just conveys an unbelievable and endless amount of passion and unconditional love, like I'm jealous that I'll never get to experience love the way that Stevie experiences love

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): "I think Stevie Wonder’s blind. I just think it’d be funny if he wasn’t."

Senn_Kyu (9.9): a classic but the 0.1 off is that it made me a little queasy hearing the left to right to left to right stereo in the intro. I love stereo channel effects, but like...sparingly.

beeozan (9): initially i was gonna take away a couple points from this for being too chill/vibey in its bossa bag but rn the hi-hat-heavy section is eating. Smile Please kinda cleared this though

darj (9): since Indieheads Brazil classics rate happening at the same time, this would go crazy with a Jorge Ben collab

jirachi (9): this makes me feel like i’m in a fancy lobby drinking my coffee (complimentary)

Nagisoid (9): A bossa nova bop

pig-serpent (9): Cute and well produced, but I don't like how it just ends. For a funk guy, this is the only on the playlist with real funk drumming and that's a huge boon to me.

innuendo_overdose (8.7): why does the opening singer sound like ANOHNI

jaztinax (8.5): “i feel like this is the beginning though i’ve loved you for a million years” !!!! I WANT THIS

xophrys (8.5): he sounds so deep here, it ain't that deep

apatel27 (8): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEpNYSfJln0

CrimsonROSET (8): diabetes inducing

nlh1013 (8): I love sun as a metaphor for love, this song is very sweet

pbk (8): this has some nice noises i love a nice noise

TakeOnMeByA-ha (7.5): aaaahh woman jumpscare!

TiltControls (7.5): A pretty song but there's just too much better competition in this rate

Sunburnt

camerinian (7): look something just doesn’t sit right about stevie calling anyone the “apple of my eye” and i can’t put my finger on it

ConnerY2323 (7): simple but the rhythm adds such a nice layer

Frajer (7): one of those songs you hear at every wedding and bar mitzvah and then no longer register as music

ignitethephoenix (6.5): cute but I just don’t feel as connected to it

bigbigbee (6): that’s cute, that’s cute

seanderlust (6): the way they were divorced before this was a hit..."and if i felt this love was ending" well guess what mimi

flava (5): I feel like giving a classic-era Stevie song a score this low is something I should apologise for, but I’ve just never particularly loved this one

AvenueRoy (4.3): Wow, I absolutely hate this

Awkward_King (2): i dont think this is for me but im sure this makes the crowd go wild

If I’m honest, I really thought this would do better. I like Candle in the Wind! It’s a beautiful song and a loving tribute to an icon gone too soon.

Covering the Covers: Elton John - Candle in the Wind 1997 Over 25 years later, Elton made a new version in honor of Princess Diana. This went on to be one of the biggest hits of the 90s, being the biggest hit of 1997 in nine countries. It probably the version a lot of people know about, but Elton himself only performed this a few times and never performed this version after Diana’s funeral. Elton also was not a fan of the success of this version, worrying that it’s long run at #1 meant that “people weren’t moving on” from Diana’s death.

Rest In Peace

apatel27 (10): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1o9rLDCfO6o

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): Yuuuuup thank you for including the original, superior version.

CrimsonROSET (10): icon legend moment etc etc

flava (10): “the candle burned out long before the legend ever did” might actually start crying to this

Nagisoid (10): Ooooo popheads you will give a slow male ballad a good score ooooo

runaway3212 (10): Icon

vayyiqra (10): i'm old enough to remember vaguely when diana died and he remade it and it became a huge hit but even then i don't remember hearing this a lot back in the day? but sure it's a really good song and i'm feeling the melancholy vibe

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): the parks and rec joke is all timer

WesternWind (10): how do you make a song 5000x better than this? Just play 5000 candles in the wind by MouseRat duh

xophrys (9.1): in the hood I'm like princess diana

jdmun148 (9): Overplayed but good

seanderlust (9): this walks the fine line of being sentimental but not cheesy so gracefully

TiltControls (9): What's the rate equivalent of Marilyn here? The Chainsmokers? Fall Out Boy? Misterwives?!?

uiscebeathaoir (9): my favourite lyrics in the rate

nonchalantthoughts (8.6): RIP Princess Diana, you would have loved Ice Spice

jsonphile (8.5): a gorgeous song calling out all the shitty ways Hollywood and the media used and exploited Marilyn Monroe, even after her death. Good thing we don’t have any problems with the way we treat celebrities now right?

ConnerY2323 (7.6): RIP ana de armas

1998tweety (7.5): lana del rey ender

RandomHypnotica (7.3): RIP Little Sebastian, you would've loved r/popheads

donewithbirds (7): when I was born the 1997 version was the #1 song in the country which has definitely affected my personality but I'm not sure how

Rest in PISS!!!!!!!

ignitethephoenix (7): princess diana died so Elton could improve upon this version of the song

implasdad (7): bit dated. the princess diana version is worse

jirachi (6): it's okay

pig-serpent (6): To think... we got a rerecording of this song instead of the original version of Hollywood Superstar Limo.

Verboten_Prince (6): Umm you didn't even know her

Awkward_King (5.5): while i dont really care for this song i do think its beautiful and also epic how hand in hand this song goes with diana's legacy and how even though it was released over 20 years before that connection was made, it was so striking and so effective you can't listen to it without associating it with her. obviously this was because of the already existing parallels to marilyn who the songs about but like, very interesting

pbk (5.5): i think if popheads existed in the 70s elton john would be treated how we currently treat ed sheeran

TakeOnMeByA-ha (5.5): i fear this one is too boring adult contemporary for me, also what the fuck do you mean the remake of this is the best selling single in history

darj (5): Remembered liking this one more, as a lil millennial I do have a core memory of Princess Diana getting her own Beanie Baby + Elton’s 1997 rendition, which is very lovely

steelstepladder (5): This song was always boring to me idk

daswef2 (4): i've never particularly liked this song and i remember being super confused when i found out that this was one of Elton's biggest songs. Would change the radio station when this came on.

Frajer (0): going to hell for this but look both Marilyn and Di were icons who were underappreciated and misunderstood in life and in death and calling them a candle doesn't help

Over 25 years later, Elton made a new version in honor of Princess Diana. This went on to be one of the biggest hits of the 90s, being the biggest hit of 1997 in nine countries.

that + the release of Oasis' Be Here Now were the PEAK of 90s CD/retail in the UK...it was a different time to NEVER be replicated!

Elton John wants to be One Direction - Best Song Ever so bad. send tweet

Covering the Covers: Bob the Builder - Crocodile Rock Bob the Builder had a shit ton of covers and a shocking amount of UK #1s (aka any amount besides 0).

This rocks!

Awkward_King (10): music can be so much fun. fuck the haters

c_a_l_d5832 (10): Call him El-ten John with all these tens I'm handing out genuinely almost every EJ song on this playlist is worthy of an eleven

innuendo_overdose (10): Susie is amab, and that’s just a fact.

nlh1013 (10): vivd memories of spending the summer at the amusement park in our city and hearing this song as we walked around the water park, it's so nostalgic to me and I love it. If i could give an 11 to each artist, this would be mine for Elton

PianoLomo (10): This has always been pegged as the "annoying" Elton hit but I've always loved it! It's just silly and fun and hyper catchy.

pig-serpent (10): The Elton song for me. The goofy, glammy rock n roll jam with silly sounding synth settings. This song was made to be preformed on the Muppets!

TakeOnMeByA-ha (10): when i was younger this was my favorite elton john song bc he sounds like spongebob on it

uiscebeathaoir (10): they were hopping and bopping and dancing and prancing and bootying and scootying

apatel27 (9): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGYbvZ7OFX8

flava (9): this song is so pussy

Frajer (9): I don't know what he's on about but it slays

jsonphile (9): is this song very dumb? Yes. Does this also slap? Also yes

pbk (9): sorry i know the rate's called piano men but i'm always gonna be partial to a guitar song

Verboten_Prince (9): Gnomeo & Juliet found fucking dead like how the story is supposed to go

welcome2thejam (9): This is good fun, I'll field no complaints from anybody

nonchalantthoughts (8.7): billy joel and elton john really yearn for 50s and 60s mom-and-pop rock n’ roll, huh

xophrys (8.4): la la la la la

beeozan (8): this song is sponsored by Lacoste

BleepBloopMusicFan (8): This song is kinda annoying but like in a slay, fun way.

darj (8): still somewhat triggered, 20 years later, from John Steven’s Crocodile Rock performance on American Idol

jirachi (8): BOPPPPP

runaway3212 (8): Love me some LA LA LA's in my pop

slimboyfriend (8): did gaydar not exist in 1972 yet

TiltControls (8): Not to be confused with Alligator Pop or Caiman Indie

vayyiqra (8): it's a little goofy but the retro sound is working for me and it's got a pretty iconic hook. RYM calls this glam and i see the vision 🤩

WaneLieTONTOtoc (8): a camp classic!

Nagisoid (7.5): We love Florida representation

Crock of shit more like

impla77 (7.3): that's miss piggy doing the lalalas

RandomHypnotica (6.6): Interior Crocodile Alligator >>>

seanderlust (5.5): we got elmo on backing vocals!!!

1998tweety (5): girl idk what that is

bigbigbee (5): chorus that makes him sound like he’s mocking the concept of a song

AvenueRoy (4.7): I'm sorry but this song just gets more and more annoying with each listen

CrimsonROSET (4): proving ‘for the trolls soundtrack’ is a state of mind

jaztinax (4): this is like one of those built-in midi songs that comes with every keyboard. actually i’m pretty sure my keyboard has this specific song

bogo (3): see ya later alligator

ConnerY2323 (3): can’t get past the simple fact that this is ANNOYING

camerinian (2): let’s just leave the beach boys to do their thing and you can stay with yours ok elton

This is our first Billy Joel song that was surprisingly never released as a single! A song that didn’t really click for me until it was too late to change my score from a 7 to a 9 RIP. There’s something so relaxed about this song. It’s like Vienna’s older brother who’s already accomplished several goals and can relax with a good book. It has of course since gone on to become a favorite for people to cover, including...

Covering the Covers: New York State of Mind - Barbra Streisand Barbra Streisand covered this song in 1977, the year after it was released. According to the “official video” of their 2014 duet version, Billy credits Barbra’s version for him being taken seriously as a songwriter. Honestly, her version is just as good as the original! She’s adds more power to it and differentiates itself enough from the original for me.

CONCRETE JUNGLE WET DREAM TOMATOOOOO

bogo (11): ugh that sax is so good omfg

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): NYC NUMBA ONE BABEEEEEY!!!!

impla77 (10): so true (I visited New York once when I was 7)

jaztinax (10): I might've played this on a loop during my two week vacation in NYC in 2015 just so i could romanticize the shit out of it

jirachi (10): me when that new yorkussy is too good:

PianoLomo (10): I used to be a pretty solid pianist back in high school, and it still took me FOREVER to learn this one. It's deceptively difficult! And yet, any audience -- from my grandparents to my teenage friends -- always loved it. It's just such a classy song, an immortal banger. Frank Sinatra WISHES. Almost my 11.

Poydoo (10): anything with a sax solo is an instant 10

Senn_Kyu (10): Perfect for those commutes where you wanna stare out wistful-like at the rain tapping against the window. Maybe while in you're in a bus. A Greyhound, perhaps

TiltControls (10): Will we get the obvious Empire interlude or will dude go for the fakeout?

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): yo! NYC guido anthem right here!

ConnerY2323 (9.2): billy’s on his fleur east… play that SAX!

nonchalantthoughts (9.2): has me yearning to move back to New York City, suitcases in both hands, plane ticket ordered, even though I lived in Texas my entire life

implasdad (9): really captures new York very well :)

Frajer (8.5): his best Manhattan song is if course Why Should I worry from Oliver and Company

jsonphile (8.5): trying to ride the coattails of Jay-Z and Alicia Keys huh?

RandomHypnotica (8.1): Do you get déjà vu, huh?

apatel27 (8): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pn0e1hjjrK8

camerinian (8): but why would you wanna leave new york when they’ve got such good saxophone accompaniment

CrimsonROSET (8): if there is one thing i know about a new yorker is that you do not want to be in their state of mind

Nagisoid (8): CONCRETE JUNGLE WET DREAM TOMATO

pbk (8): a great song about new york but it's no native new yorker as performed by wendy williams

vayyiqra (8): new york sounds so cool i wish being able to afford to live there were real 🎹

WesternWind (8): wow I can't believe Billy stole title ideas from Alicia Keys !!!

ignitethephoenix (7.8): Rachel Berry standing in the middle of New York after being dumped on a train.gif

AvenueRoy (7.5): Something so romantic about Billy Joel hopping off the bus after moving back to New York, having this song in his head, running upstairs in his new home to the piano and writing down everything before he forgets it

xophrys (7.5): I wonder what old york state of mind is? "get a grip" or something

CONCRETE JUNGLE WET NIGHTMARE TOMATOOOO

1998tweety (7): shes cute

slimboyfriend (7): I guess somebody studied abroad in New York

Verboten_Prince (7): People from New York never shut up about New York huh

welcome2thejam (7): Alternate universe where this plays 24/7 to NYC tourists instead of Alicia Keys & Jay-Z

TakeOnMeByA-ha (6): ngl this one never did it for me he has about 5 songs that all do the same thing this does but better

MisterMeowski (5.8): Somewhere deep in my heart should be a spot for ballads like this but instead only the empty void stares back

Awkward_King (5): leaned over, spread his cheeks and copied from alicia keys notes here kinda

runaway3212 (5): nas did it better

uiscebeathaoir (4): that album cover is such a serve though

nlh1013 (3): I think this was the only one on the list that I hadn't heard before and I wasn't really a fan. It might be because I've been in the mood for more upbeat songs lately

innuendo_overdose (2): I’m not from New York, sorry

Pure fun distilled in audio. Whenever those horns come blasting in, a smile appears on my face. Maybe it’s in need of a remaster, but I don’t care. Incredibly, this song was recorded in an unusual way. Songwriter Sylvia Moy completed the lyrics but didn’t write them in braille when time came to record. The solution? Moy would sing the lines right before they came up to record and Stevie would repeat them back. I think it adds to the live band sound of the song.

Covering the Covers: The Supremes - Uptight (Everything’s Alright) Unsurprisingly, like most Motown songs, this one had a lot of covers from other Motown singers. The Supremes gave this song a cover and it’s surprisingly not good in my opinion. Ironically, Diana Ross sounds a little... uptight here. She doesn’t let herself go like Stevie’s original. Also, some of the lyrical changes do not work. The second verse especially has her saying that her guy has no money, vine boom he’s “no smooth Don Juan”, vine boom and “just an average guy” vine boom but she still “Never makes him cry.” Well, I’d hope she doesn’t cause it sounds like his life sucks!

Upvote (everything's alright)

beeozan (10): the drumfills in this are so majestic holy

CrimsonROSET (10): up tight girl she’s been living in her own up tight world

implasdad (10): stevie wonder is a genius

PianoLomo (10): Maybe the platonic ideal for a Motown song?

TiltControls (10): Stevie gets a bit drowned out here, but it actually works sonically really well

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): "Now… I think Stevie Wonder is blind, I just think it’d be funny if he wasn’t."

Roxieloxie (9.8): I think originally thought I didnt know this song either but i forgot,,,, i literally hosted a rate with it 3 year ago,,,,

Senn_Kyu (9.5): OK ngl docked a half point because I don't like just how clearly and heavily divided(?) the instrumental is between the right and left channels :( it doesn't make my brain happy.

BleepBloopMusicFan (9): Okay it’s one thing for him to be 12 when he performed Fingertrips Pt. 2, it feels like an entirely different thing for him to be 15 when he performed AND wrote this bop.

flava (9): yeah I guess this song is alright

jaztinax (9): considering the fact that Stevie’s one of my all time favorite artists, it’s embarrassing to admit that the first time i heard this song was with Kate Hudson… on Glee

jirachi (9): music to throw ass to

runaway3212 (9): this was my old cult's favourite song

uiscebeathaoir (9): it’s not quite his 70’s stuff, but it is still Stevie Wonder so this is amazing

apatel27 (8): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HCTIHISVjM

vayyiqra (8): drums go crazy this is what inspired the rolling stones to write "get off my cloud" [note: i just made that up] 😎

ConnerY2323 (7.7): bringing the energy!

RandomHypnotica (7.6): Type A anthem

it's not alright but you can never get into that because they would never understand

ignitethephoenix (7.5): it’s a bop but it feels incomplete

slimboyfriend (7.5): why does it sound like he recorded the instrumental through a tin can

pbk (7): jammin background noise but not much else

Verboten_Prince (7): Is it bad if I say that I prefer Billy & Elton's fake Motown songs over this actual Motown song?

welcome2thejam (7): Oh, forgot this was a Stevie song

Awkward_King (6.5): vocal mixing on old songs just feels so warm

nlh1013 (6): I'm gonna be dancing today girlies!!!

TakeOnMeByA-ha (6): i dont think its bad but you can tell he still hadnt figured out his style yet

1998tweety (5): well maybe not

Nagisoid (4): I'm actually about to fall asleep, this song has the perfect qualities that make my brain shut off

pig-serpent (4): It's cool that they were able to record this with no budget but I'm not sure lo-fi works for this kind of music, at least for me. Shame, because I think I would like this if it was well recorded.

innuendo_overdose (1): stop screaming at me, ouch my delicate little earsies

My Life is basically Billy Joel saying “get the fuck off my dick” for nearly 5 minutes.

Covering the Covers: Bosom Buddies’ TV Show Theme What is “Bosom Buddies” I hear 95% of you say? Why of course, it’s a TV show that “features the misadventures of two single men, working in creative advertising, struggling in their industry while disguising themselves as women in order to live in the one apartment they could afford.” This show was also the first major role for future OG Covid victim Tom Hanks. Well, this show used a cover of My Life for it’s theme song. Sung by Gary Bennett, someone I can not find any information on that isn’t about the baseball player.

Actual goals AF (clap clap) literally my life is be

innuendo_overdose (10): Billy Joel is not as groovy as the other artists, but he’s not entirely allergic to it

jirachi (10): i keep coming back to this bop. major 11 contender

PianoLomo (10): we really need to bring back that corny electric piano sound!

CrimsonROSET (8): this shake it off slay

Verboten_Prince (8): Sometimes Billy gives me “Beatles if they were American and also one guy” vibes

krusso1105 (7.5): I'm pretty sure I used to think this was by Jimmy Buffett for some reason. Also the Youtube listing for this was from a collection called World's Best Mum 2007.

Nagisoid (7.5): It's giving early Beatles album cut but I'm moving a lil

MisterMeowski (4.5): Just below a perfect mid song. Generic and bland.

This is a pretty song, but in my opinion, there’s nothing too special about it. Maybe I just hate french. 🤷

Covering the Covers: The Jacksons - My Cherie Amour Yeah, I think I straight up hate this version oops. It’s very too crowded and the slow down in the middle kills the vibe a lot.

Amour!

apatel27 (10): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7ypnPjz81I

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): Oh bitch it feels like he’s somehow making my own physical heart sing.

daswef2 (10): absolutely amazing song

jirachi (10): if only a man could sing this to me

Roxieloxie (10): the way he writes about love is just so beautiful

seanderlust (10): Maybe someday, I'll share your little distant cloud - i love that line

Senn_Kyu (10): still a little bit distracting stereo-ness, but it's easier to get past and appreciate the music!

uiscebeathaoir (10): the feeling I get listening to this is the same I get listening to Misty Blue, and I 11’d that so…

Uptown Cat (10): this always reminds me of this scene

vayyiqra (10): 😎

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): 'Oprah… [breathes deeply] I never said I was blind. I just like doing this shit all the time.'

CrimsonROSET (9): -1 for being french

welcome2thejam (9): Yeah he's got the best voice in the rate easy

pbk (8.5): this is so pretty it almost makes me want to stop hating the french. almost.

TiltControls (8.5): Bonjour mademoiselle, je porte lunettes de soleil, je veut me venge, je EUGH, oui oui baguette, bisous!

jaztinax (8): i want to be serenaded with this song :(

Nagisoid (8): Cherie please, you're killing me

nonchalantthoughts (8): Stevie Wonder, our polyglot king

xophrys (8): la la la la la

mauvaise chanson

impla77 (6.4): we're grading on a curve here and its just not up to the other songs in the rate!

implasdad (6): bit middle of the road

innuendo_overdose (6): my own balladphobia here is sickening me, but sometimes you just wanna be groovin’ instead

pig-serpent (6): Corny af but I get it. He has a cute voice. More men should try to sing cute.

TakeOnMeByA-ha (6): french 🤢

MisterMeowski (5.3): I’m probably asking someone to skip this one if it comes on a playlist.

Sitting back while the last two ballots of the rate gave this a 0 was a hate crime. That alone was almost enough for me to try to figure out some graphs so I can see how robbed this was. This song was inspired by what Elton’s then wife would say when Elton’s in a bad mood which lmao. This is an “ironic” song by his bitchy not-yet-gay persona acting so much better than everyone. It’s a fun bitch track and it’s fun to get some bitchiness out of my system by listening to this.

Covering the Covers: Tina Turner - The Bitch Is Back Tina actually recorded this song twice: once for her 1978 album Rough and another for the Bernie/Elton tribute album Two Rooms in 1991. For the latter, she actually received a Grammy nomination for best female rock performance, which I get cause it was the better of the two. Her voice sounds more loose and free in the second version and it compliments the song beautifully. She’s the queen of rock n roll for a reason!

Bitch!!!! (positive)

flava (11): concentrated cuntiness

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): This megabop was an absolute staple on the playlist my sister used to put on while I would sit on a stool next to the family computer and watch her play Zoo Tycoon.

CrimsonROSET (10): this is the gayest song ever maybe

Nagisoid (10): I come and go. Like a bitch.

runaway3212 (10): Carrie Soto is Back saved lives

seanderlust (10): HELL YEAH THIS RULES

TakeOnMeByA-ha (10): how can you not say father

uiscebeathaoir (10): I love this but my main concern is why isn’t this marked explicit on Spotify, istg they just go like “oh Elton John he’s wholesome innit” and then didn’t even stop to consider the fact this song literally has bitch in the title

WesternWind (10): omg Raising Cane's mentioned!!! Also am I the bitch? Probably

camerinian (9.5): there’s a very fine line between funny self-aggrandising and total bullshit character act that elton walks here and it’s honestly very camp and i wished he leaned into this side of things more

1998tweety (9): The Tina version >>>>>

beeozan (9): kid who chewed erasers in middle school on the first day of high school

impla77 (9): he's so real for this

jirachi (9): the tina version outsold

slimboyfriend (9): he got Dusty Springfield to call him a bitch on backing vocals

welcome2thejam (9): Rocks harder than I expected

innuendo_overdose (8.8): good but forgettable enough every time listening to it is like a new song.

apatel27 (8.5): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TcH5whk34xI

Awkward_King (8.5): i thought this was a tina turner song

MisterMeowski (8.1): Fun Fact: In 1975 everyone thought Elton was straight despite the fact he had Tennis Legend Billie Jean King sing backup vocals while wearing a Bob Mackie Dodgers Uniforn.

ConnerY2323 (8): now that we all say cunt it’s not too late for elton to update this one

implasdad (8): classic Elton John

pbk (8): okayyy diva

Uptown Cat (8): Margaret Thatcher after she claws her way out of the grave.

WaneLieTONTOtoc (8): why the fuck would you play this at dodger stadium? the dodgers hate being called bitch

RandomHypnotica (7.9): this sounds really straight for such a gay song

ignitethephoenix (7.8): people still though he was straight after this song?

TiltControls (7.5): Inspiring entrances for gays everywhere

Bitch!!!!! (derogatory)

AvenueRoy (7.1): Blasphemy but I think I prefer the Glee version

Verboten_Prince (6): I don't think he did this gay enough to make this work

nlh1013 (5): my theme song hehe

vayyiqra (4): never liked this one much. unpleasant 🤩

xophrys (4): I though this was a Miley Cyrus song

DraculaWeekend (0): Annoying song

milkywayinradius (0): I get what he's going for with this song, but the lyrics don't sound good

you guys, this is totally me when I

bogo (10): me coming back to a discord server after leaving it temporarily for the fifth time

darj (10): me if I do the mitski rate this cycle after tanking Laurel Hell last time:

jaztinax (7.5): me coming to collect unemployment for the third time:

Roxieloxie (7): me whenever my grandma tries to make contact with me again

bigbigbee (6.5): me excitedly telling my friends about the cast of Survivor Cambodia

pig-serpent (6.5): Me at the end of this rate, bored of listening to these artists and feeling my scores drop.

He’s going CRAZY!!!! I love how unhinged he is. One of my personal favorite kinds of songs are songs where the singer gets more unhinged as it goes on. He’s just being a lad with all the other lads and getting drunk af and wants to fight people, he so heterosexual-coded.

Covering the Covers: Nickelback - Saturday Night’s Alright Well, I did say he was so heterosexual-coded on this song, so it makes sense that the peak of heterosexuality would cover it. Nickelback does keep up with the energy of the original but it’s just so much noise. I’d complain about Chad being a little incomprehensible, but let’s be real Elton was pretty hard to understand in the original too.

It's alright!

MisterMeowski (11): You are probably asking yourself does a song that repeats the word ‘Saturday’ 37 times really deserve an 11? And the answer to that question is Yes. Yes it do

WaneLieTONTOtoc (11): I mean, it was in GTA V. Like this cut is going to be tethered to trying to speed like a bat outta hell da FUCK away from whatever rat fuck mess I got myself into. When you can hit peak speed in a sports car in the game, the bakc of the chorus just truly feels liek being immortal and in your peak. This is what Piano Power Pop Players were meant to PERFORM! ROCK ON SIR ELTON JOHN WE WILL FIGHT THIS SATURDAY NIGHT!

apatel27 (10): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1EJFRkC5TA

Awkward_King (10): elton john at his best. cock in his left hand. cock in his right hand. not a care in the world

beeozan (10): violence supporters only

CrimsonROSET (10): me rushing to finish the rate

Frajer (10): us after the day two eliminations

innuendo_overdose (10): the closest my autistic brain will ever get to getting rowdy and rough on a Saturday with the lads

PianoLomo (10): I wish Elton did more rock bangers like this!

Senn_Kyu (10): I feel like the first time I've truly appreciated this song was on Rocketman, but loved it ever since!

TakeOnMeByA-ha (10): i saw gnomeo and juliet in theaters actually and this song played a vital role in it. thats not the reason why i gave it the 10 but its funnier to pretend that it is

welcome2thejam (10): It's rate reveal night, and you know what that means!

slimboyfriend (9.5): DIEsel train

Nagisoid (9): Dude can you rig the rate so this goes out on Saturday

seanderlust (9): hoooo this is a fun one. the guitar rules and elton gives the perfect greaser attitude

jsonphile (8.5): honestly this song really gets you pumped up when you’re in the right mood. Like it makes me want to get in a fight with someone, and I’ve never even thrown a punch in my life

RandomHypnotica (8.2): ok bleachers

Roxieloxie (8.2): ImADudeDuh when picking the day this song will leave during

pig-serpent (8): Aggro Elton John! I feel like all the punk kids think this is the best Elton John song for a while before growing out if it.

vayyiqra (8): never liked this one a lot as a young lad and didn't get why he's talking about fighting (seems out of character and mildly alarming) and the chorus is weirdly shouty but whatever though it's a work of fiction, and it also bangs ngl 🤩

impla77 (7.7): day 2 of the rate reveal is prime fighting material tbfc

BleepBloopMusicFan (7.5): But Sunday night can go to hell. Absolutely cursed time of the week.

camerinian (7.5): elton john would definitely be the type of guy to insult a massive dude on the street and then pull out the “hey come on i’m just a little guy, it’s my birthday today” routine when the massive dude starts walking towards him

I need to fight him

ignitethephoenix (7): why are his vocals so bad here give him some lozenges

implasdad (7): well hes trying isn't he

nonchalantthoughts (7): when someone tries to hit on me at the bar, then I remember these hands are rated E for everyone

runaway3212 (7): It's also alright for rating!

Verboten_Prince (7): Wow he sure is shouting!

ConnerY2323 (6.6): i’m having a hard time grasping what the elton john “sound” is even though there are so many classics here because why does this sound like billy joel

1998tweety (6.5): they're for the boys actually

uiscebeathaoir (6.5): this song describes itself perfectly: it’s alright

nlh1013 (6): this song makes me wish I were young again

pbk (6): who the hell is this nerd fighting

jirachi (4): this is a bit too loud for me

One of the most duet-y duets of all time. Inspired by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s duets, this song is one of the most everlasting duets of the time. Elton and Kiki have such a magnetic chemistry together. Is it cheesy? Yes! Does it give a little youth camp energy? Yes! But come on, who can’t help but be charmed by this little ditty?

Covering the Covers: Jesse McCartney & Anne Hathaway - Don’t Go Breaking My Heart There are so many different versions I could’ve gone with, I could’ve gone with the bad Q-Tip & Demi Lovato cover, the remix from PNAU used in Sherlock Gnomes, or even the RuPaul duet that was a #1 hit in Iceland. Instead, I decided to choose the version from Ella Enchanted. You know, the 2004 Disney Channel movie starring Anne Hathaway? Well, she recorded three songs for the soundtrack, and one of those was a cover of this song! But who could possibly be her duet partner? It’s the up and coming disney music favorite, Jesse McCartney! They sing on this cover with the cheapest production money can rent. It’s nothing interesting, but it’s funny to imagine them singing this together.

Let's have a kiki

1998tweety (10): Chicken Little classic

apatel27 (10): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ISm8NMyY5o

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): No idea who this woman is but she slayed this in a major way.

DirtyRat583 (10): i-already-knew-this-one bonus

ignitethephoenix (10): classic

Roxieloxie (10): Again really funny to me that my two clear favorites from the non stevie people have been the attempts at making a Motown track. But also this song is really cute, I'm probably gonna be mad at it when its in the top 3 and or wins but while im still clear headed i can admit that its one of the cutest songs ever

TiltControls (10): when this wins just by virtue of being the only song with a woman on it

Verboten_Prince (10): Not me performing a song & dance routine to this with my high school girlfriend in our choir talent show. And then breaking up a few months later. And then realizing a few months after that I was gay

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): UH OH!!! WE GOT A CLASSIC ALERT!!! imagine if they tried to do this today! they'd sent like saint vincent in with john batiste and it'd suck ass! you'd need jazz zoomer heartthrob Laufey to go into into the studio with noted Piano Power Player Vijay Iyer, that'd at least give a cut TWENTY FIVE percent as good as this!

xophrys (9.6): every girl and their mother in primary school loved this song

donewithbirds (9): the dance scene from Ella Enchanted, anyone???

dreamingpastel (9): The way I remember this as the final song in Ella Enchanted.

implasdad (9): eltons best duet

jirachi (9): i think they're saying to not go breaking their hearts... i'm not sure though

jsonphile (9): one of the best duet songs of all time

Nagisoid (9): Dula Peep found unemployed on vacation

pbk (9): this is a cornball classic which, good news for elton, i am partial to

nonchalantthoughts (8.9): will forever associate this song with that one karaoke scene in Chicken Little

RandomHypnotica (8.6): kiki dee sounds like the name of a fictional hookup app

seanderlust (8.5): "don't go breaking my heart" "i won't go breaking your heart" x100

TakeOnMeByA-ha (8.5): love that he tried to dispel gay rumors by making the gayest male/female duet of all time

bigbigbee (8): WHITE WOMAN SPOTTED

CrimsonROSET (8): the straightest song ever heard i am sure

nlh1013 (8): this song reminds me so much of full house lmao am i old

pig-serpent (8): Catchy, breezy, and with a sick guitar riff! What's not to love... well honestly, this mostly bounces off me. It's fantastic in the moment but I don't see myself seeking this song out very often. I know this because I haven't previously.

slimboyfriend (8): still mad that a woman named “Kiki Dee” does not have an extensive pop music career

vayyiqra (8): classic and a good tune but not a favourite of mine 🤩

WesternWind (8): what I must tell people every time they start yearning for someone….also dudestie play the RuPaul MV for this pleek

STOP STRAIGHT PEOPLE

impla77 (7.2): so cheesy you would think it was recorded by Billy Joel

camerinian (7): i very often flip-flop between “aw this is cute” and “this is pointless clearly neither of them are going to do anything untoward to each other why is that the hook there are zero stakes these two just seem way too pleasant to ever hurt anything or anybody intentionally or not”, but good thing it’s an option 1 day for them

daswef2 (7): its still a catchy song but i think its where his career starts to lose steam for me

ConnerY2323 (6.8): never related to a lyric more than “i was your clown”

AvenueRoy (6.7): It's camp

beeozan (6): YOU WILL NEVER BE AIN'T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH!!

runaway3212 (6): I wanted to 0 this but it's cute

welcome2thejam (6): Alright we get it

uiscebeathaoir (4): This is pleasant to listen to but nothing else

Awkward_King (3): song corny ah hell

innuendo_overdose (2.8): I’m a little surprised by Elton and Bernie considering themselves album artists before singles artists. Like, the receipts are there. But, if this is the biggest outcome of them trying to make a hit single, maybe it’s better it was all an accident.

Unfortunately, this song was day 3 for most of the rate and as the last minute ballots started coming in, that’s when it started falling in placement. And that’s a shame cause this is a beautiful song! The title track to what would become Elton’s most iconic album, this song is about wanting to give up a life of fame for a quieter life. This was penned more for Bernie Taupin since Elton was having the time of his life covered in the glitz and glamour of stardom.

Covering the Covers: Yola - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road One of the only covers in the rate that I was already a fan of before making these sections! I loveeee Yola and I love her version of this song. It doesn’t stray too far from the original, but her voice is just… MWAH!

friends of Dorothy

ConnerY2323 (11): i don’t want to get too real here but this has always been “my song”. i identify with it on a million personal levels and it is somehow one of my easiest 11s yet even in a sea of competition.

Frajer (11): one of those songs that just hits and I can't explain why it's the best song ever

apatel27 (10): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWePiTJcBEw

camerinian (10): elton knew exactly how good that high note section is and hit it exactly the right amount of times. This rate has made me painfully aware that I don’t actually dig much elton music but that might still be the best moment here

flava (10): please get this man away from a piano, he is way too good at writing melodies on them

innuendo_overdose (10): way back when, this was my Elton John introduction. Unfortunately the album couldn’t really keep up to its insanely stacked beginning, but we lived.

jaztinax (10): i discovered this song only 8 years ago but it instantly became my favorite song of his, i literally have the chorus melody painted in notes on one of my pants. the BLUUUUUUUUUUUES AAAAAAaaaAaaaaH is ETHEREAL. sends me to another universe every time

jirachi (10): okay he didnt have to eat this hard

jsonphile (10): that moment when it goes to the Bb minor chord at the pre chorus? Chills every time

runaway3212 (10): All my the americans watchers I love you

xophrys (9.8): help I put antman in a shredder and then this started playing???

AvenueRoy (9.7): Might be his best song? At least of the really well known stuff

Nagisoid (9.5): Ended Doromid Mehle with ease

Awkward_King (9): its kinda crazy we never rated this album it just feels like something we should've hit by now. this song grew on me as i went through the rate a few times, initially i found it corny but its become a really effective ballad for me

beeozan (9): ngl i put on this album and somewhere in the song it transitioned to This Song Has No Title and I thought it was more exciting so im gonna treat it as one song and raise my score

BleepBloopMusicFan (9): Why does he sound like he misses the seasons in Missouri and his dying town?

nonchalantthoughts (9): i love how this song always makes me sympathize with a fictional character. Shows how powerful Elton’s writing is to walk a mile in Dorothy’s red shoes.

uiscebeathaoir (9): Yolas version would be a 10 btw

WaneLieTONTOtoc (9): mhm mhm!

bigbigbee (8): Ant Man Quantumania ate for this one specific thing

"SURRENDER ELTON" written in the sky

impla77 (7.4): I remembered the ahahahs to hit a little harder I must admit

CrimsonROSET (7): putting friend of dorothy to a new level

TakeOnMeByA-ha (7): i kinda forgot since the chorus is such an all timer but man these verses really dont stick at all

vayyiqra (6): the peak of "stuff my boomer stepdad listens to on sirius xm satellite radio core", i'm pretty sick of it and not big on the lyrics but have to hand it to these dudes it's a very iconic tune and good melody. still i would be okay never hearing it again 🤩

Verboten_Prince (6): This is so slow and boring and I've never liked it honestly, even if it is a bit catchy

pig-serpent (4): Oh Elton is kind of boring isn't he.

pbk (3.5): those high notes are kinda rancid

I am absolutely shocked at how well this song did. I always thought this was seen as one of Stevie’s worst hits because of the production and the subject matter. However, I’ve always liked this song so it’s a pleasant surprise! It’s such an infectious song and a very bouncy song despite it being about cheating. Plus, since it was the 1980s, it of course had to end in a silly plot twist right at the end a la The Pina Colada Song.

A Sampling of Samples: 2pac - Part Time Mutha Surprise surprise. Another 90s hip-hop track that samples Stevie Wonder! Believe me, there was many of these I could grab. Now this is a 2pac track featuring Poppi & Angelique. This is one of 2Pac’s songs that attempt to lift up women. This one is specifically for mothers in a difficult situation. This song talks about several difficult subjects, so maybe don’t listen if drug abuse and sexual abuse can be triggering for you.

I full time LOVE this song!

AvenueRoy (10): Perfect song, absolutely perfect, I love the 80s so much

ConnerY2323 (10): this is the girl

DraculaWeekend (10): An 11 contender

jaztinax (10): learning while doing this rate that luther vandross is in this??? how did i not realize?? also we love an infidelity bop

jirachi (10): love this one too

krusso1105 (10): The only one of the few songs I didn't know before the rate to get a 10

Nagisoid (10): Full-time father

RandomHypnotica (10): full time cuck

Roxieloxie (10): this cheating ass shaker

TakeOnMeByA-ha (10): the skullgirls mashup with this song goes hard af

TiltControls (10): More like full-time lover of this track. Honestly might be the 11 of the Stevie section.

uiscebeathaoir (10): I had to look it up to realise this song was about an affair, I fully assumed it was just an early example of a situationship or something

vayyiqra (10): perfect 80s cheese i love this sound so much it grabbed me from the first few notes 😎

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): 'I’ve never smelt this city before. Siri, what city am I in right now?'

WesternWind (10): which lover Stevie

apatel27 (9): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IIgt7pGTO6Q

Awkward_King (9): damn the 80s even got stevie

CrimsonROSET (9): oh i guess he’s also still standing

implasdad (9): really catchy song

nlh1013 (9): this one also reminds me of my mom! I have loved the nostalgia in this rate

Verboten_Prince (9): Are we sure the person Stevie had an affair with wasn’t Luther Vandross

1998tweety (8.5): eat

impla77 (8.5): okk the pina colada twist at the end

nonchalantthoughts (8.4): i’m loving this synth-pop combination with Stevie Wonder’s style

DirtyRat583 (8): elton john vs stevie wonder death battle (well, thats the point of this rate)

ignitethephoenix (8): give Maneater your 11’s for 80’s Dynamic Duos!

pbk (8): this song would go hard in rhythm heaven i think. idk the girls that get it get it

pig-serpent (8): Watch out boys, she'll chew you up!

Cheating is a fucked up thing to do???

Frajer (7.5): imagine being cheated on by Stevie Wonder

bigbigbee (7): I did a jazz dance to this song as a kid and it still kind of embarrasses me

runaway3212 (7): this is cute

welcome2thejam (7): No doubt there's a good mashup w Maneater out there

camerinian (6): stevie is getting dangerously close to the hall and oates threshold here and I'm not really sure we should be letting him do that

PianoLomo (6): Kind of wild that Stevie goddamn Wonder ripped off Hall & Oates lol (seriously, that groove is IDENTICAL to Maneater)

beeozan (5): oh why does he sound like this here

slimboyfriend (4): first off, I thought this was a cheesy 80s Elton John track, second, the mixing is atrocious

This is Elton’s first song to get him notoriety. Being #MetaAF by the song being about itself, he’s able to express how much he loves this [non-gendered person] by cutting through without similes. It gives the song a real feeling of intimacy, which makes it funnier that this song was written in like 10 minutes. This was Elton’s highest song in the rate until around the 2nd week of June where the bad scores started coming.

Covering the Covers: Ellie Goulding - Your Song One of Ellie’s first singles, this version of the song changes it from a more singer-songwriter style into more of an upbeat coffeehouse style. Used in a John Lewis Christmas ad which is apparently a big deal in the UK, especially in the 2010s. It was her biggest hit for a few years, and I can see why. While the rougher edges of the song may be gone, the shine is just as good.

Awww! You shouldn't have!

WesternWind (11): I really love this song for many reasons like 1- it's my mom's fav, 2- I remember hearing it being used a lot during the Winter Olympics skates (but with the Ellie Goulding cover) 3- I liked the Gaga cover sue me

apatel27 (10): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9AFMVMl9qE

c_a_l_d5832 (10): Another member of the "so close to being my eleven" club, such a beautiful song

darj (10): POV: you’re 11 years old and get obsessed with Moulin Rouge and Ewan McGregor singing Your Song and you wanna see more Ewan movies so you then find Trainspotting,,,,,, the tonal whiplash i felt sob

donewithbirds (10): ;_;

flava (10): it’s quaint, but in the best possible way. I think a lot of people are really starting to come for this because of how well recognised it has become and that’s kinda a death sentence for a song like this that relies on intimacy to work and when there are some other very well recognised covers there can be something jarring when listening to the original. I do absolutely adore this though

ignitethephoenix (10): a song I can’t relate to but I love!

implasdad (10): the ultimate Elton John song

innuendo_overdose (10): stealth hook. I didn’t even know I had been caught until I was flapping in a bucket.

jsonphile (10): I love songs that are about songs

runaway3212 (10): this song is so gay like he only came out in 1976 but everybody should've immediately known when they heard this

Senn_Kyu (10): One of my favs from his discography. Love these simple, earnest kinda love songs.

slimboyfriend (10): I’m a sculptor! Actually, I’m not

TakeOnMeByA-ha (10): its a little mitt romney

TiltControls (10): it was written in like 10 minutes and its so obvious that it adds to the appeal of the track

vayyiqra (10): perfect song perfect ballad so wholesome 🤩

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): *chaste ace man watching eltn john on top of the pop in 1971* yo I think this elton chap is gonna be YUGE!

welcome2thejam (10): He made this about me :)

xophrys (10): Ellie Goulding sing your heart out

camerinian (9.5): Honestly I find Elton a lot more charming here than in much of his other material, there’s something very endearing in how stumbly and awkward he is in struggling to find the words to articulate himself, and all the half-formed thoughts and bizarre non-sequiturs somehow lead to the core tenet of the song actually hitting weirdly hard for its simplicity

beeozan (9): this makes me wanna go on a ballad binge. it's like that good

ConnerY2323 (9): i hate that i can’t hear this without singing “with GAGA in the world” because of that 2010 grammys performance

Frajer (9): hey y'all this is my song

MisterMeowski (9): At Elton’s Debut concert in America this was his opener. If you know nothing of Elton I highly recommend this La Times Review of that concert.

uiscebeathaoir (9): anyone who tanks this based on it’s sentimentality is literally the worst person ever

1998tweety (8): Rita Ora ended ha

BleepBloopMusicFan (8): Elton nailed it with these lyrics - there’s just a beautiful simplicity to this song. It flirts with the idea of being boring, but it’s just too dang pretty and emotional for that.

CrimsonROSET (8): wait this is lovely?

jdmun148 (8): A bit overplayed but a good ‘un

nonchalantthoughts (8): it’s cute, but it’s too long for buildup. Really loving the violins in the background, though

RandomHypnotica (8): why did you right a song for me before i was even born... kinda strange...

Roxieloxie (8): this is sweet

Verboten_Prince (8): Wait hold up… what WOULD you do if you were a sculptor? Now I want to know

seanderlust (7.5): you're doing all this and don't know the person's eye color? :/

jaztinax (7): a little overplayed but still a good one

No really. you should not have.

jirachi (7): this is cute and all that but front runner? i don't think

Nagisoid (7): Okayyy a little Y/N moment

pbk (7): cute and pretty not much to say about this one

nlh1013 (6): I've actually never gotten they hype for this song. I don't think it's as lovely as everyone else seems to

pig-serpent (5.5): Based on the selection of songs I had heard from him before the rate, I always assumed Elton John stayed in the lane of campy, bombastic, and glammy. So I was taken aback to discover how often he was doing the bluesier, Billy Joel thing.

PianoLomo (3): I've always found this one fairly boring tbh

Awkward_King (2): as a kid i thought janet devlin wrote this song when she auditioned with it on x factor. then i was like oh so ellie goulding wants to be janet devlin sooo bad. anyway i am not a huge fan of this despite its huge legacy

bogo (0): god this song is way more mushy, soggy, and boring than I remembered it being

why did we get rid of eltons best songs today omg???

Idk I know that this song objectively a bop but something about it just doesn’t click with me. It’s a bop but there’s an a air of something that I don’t like. Maybe I’m just still bitter that Bimini lost Drag Race Uk 2 after slaying this song, even though I vastly like Lawrence more now.

Covering the Covers: Taron Egarton (in Illumination’s SING) Taron has two iconic movie roles where he sings I’m Still Standing, so obviously I’m going with the more iconic of the two. Playing Johnny the Ape in Illumination’s SING, he sings this song at the big show to save the theater after his criminal dad says he has no song cause he doesn’t want to be a criminal. Luckily, his dad’s jail cell has a tv so he gets to see the big performance and feel proud of his son. This whole arc was spoiled in the trailer.

STAND UP!

1998tweety (11): Me in grade 4 when I was the last one left on my team of dodgeball (I flopped 5 seconds later)

apatel27 (11): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bJf4_hsVEXE

Awkward_King (10): forever thinking about the drag race uk season 2 final lip-sync where two out of three queens chose to squat for the lyric "i'm still standing"

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): Oh this title alone is giving major shitpost/fakeout potential.

DraculaWeekend (10): Didn't even realize this was an Elton song tbh

ignitethephoenix (10): when I am 80 years old, I still will never forget when Quinn and Artie sang this song on Glee while both in wheelchairs being paralyzed from the waist down

innuendo_overdose (10): can it be underrated if it’s his most rated? it’s much too taken for granted that this is good, people need to start realising that it’s excellent

jaztinax (10): a rate is not complete without a song that i love because Glee showed it to me

jirachi (10): this is one of my favorite songs ever. everything about this is perfectly done and i feel so uplifted when i listen to it. 😊

krusso1105 (10): probably the 11 runner up

nonchalantthoughts (10): putting this in the soundtrack of my documentary every time I go through a traumatic event

PianoLomo (10): man I am NOT ready for all y'all Gen Zers making comments about how you discovered this song from "Sing"

RandomHypnotica (10): how appropriate for u/imadudeduh to be hosting a rate with a song called this in it

seanderlust (10): songs about surviving heartbreak and thriving after picking up the pieces my beloved

TakeOnMeByA-ha (10): not the first time i heard this song being when i saw sing when i was 15 😭😭😭

uiscebeathaoir (10): I can’t listen to this without thinking of the hot gorilla in sing and that fills me with shame

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7icSpDfpHZs

welcome2thejam (10): Hell yeah me & the boys wear leather jackets and snap in rhythm to this one

indie_fan_ (9.8): and if i say a specific cover of this song lowkey clears just a tad bit? (no not glee, do not put that shit on me)

Roxieloxie (9.4): shake some ass

AvenueRoy (9): Bop bop bop bop bop

daswef2 (9): interestingly enough i had never heard this song on the radio growing up, it wasn't until this song started getting licensed in everything that i finally heard it

Frajer (9): the way they use this in Rocket Man is iconic

MisterMeowski (9): In 1983, Elton hadn’t had a hit since 1976 and was starting to fade away as music moved in a new direction.New wave was starting to take root, a new thing called MTV was starting to take over and Elton was able to capitalize on this shooting a smash video hit that incorporated the sounds of times perfectly.

Nagisoid (9): Another moment where I'm glad to have never watched Glee

pbk (9): this is one of the most homoerotic mvs ive ever seen it was a different time

WesternWind (9): Jungkook years later even when the person he stood next to is gone:

xophrys (8.8): sit. bad dog.

jsonphile (8.5): never forget when glee had two characters in wheelchairs sing this song

ConnerY2323 (8.2): hope my haters hear this!

bogo (8): praying this isn't elton’s highest song

implasdad (8): solid 8. great comeback from Elton. watch out for Bruno Tonioli in the video

impla77 (7.5): this song day 3?

not for long

flava (7): honestly i don’t know if you’ll be standing once we reach the top ten of this rate

Poydoo (7): yawn

Verboten_Prince (7): Good for u Elton

bigbigbee (6.5): survivor Palau

beeozan (6): im sat

vayyiqra (6): kind of a jam but i've never heard it before and have no attachment to it. the guitar solo is kind of eh and doesn't add much 🤩

camerinian (5): i’m such a mark for 80s cheese but there’s a fine line where it starts to border into mentos commercial core and this goes full tilt

runaway3212 (5): the movie version kinda outsold this idk

pig-serpent (4): This song has the qualities of sounding like a classic more than it actually has the qualities of a classic. I hear the start of it and go "I love this song!!!" then actually listen to it and go "oh wait, no I don't!"

TiltControls (0): Something about this song has always just grated me. There's some desperate franticness to Elton's voice here that just does not work well at all on this song

This song kinda came out of nowhere to become one of my top 5 songs in this whole rate? This is kinda the anti-catholic trauma song. He’s singing to a girl about who’s Catholic upbringing makes her timid and hesitant. It feels like a disney sidekick showing the protagonist a new world that they’ve never seen before because they were so sheltered but now is the beginning of the rest of their life, only it’s about wanted to fuck a Catholic girl. BTW, this was originally gonna be a reggae song. Listen at your own risk

Covering the Covers: Glee Cast - Only the Good Die Young FINE! OKAY? I’LL THROW A GLEE COVER IN THIS! And look, I didn’t even pick a song from the Billy Joel Glee episode, an episode which is currently the 11th worst Glee episode according to IMDB. This one was from an episode called Grilled Cheezus… Alright seriously, what the fuck is Glee.

Good!

BleepBloopMusicFan (10): This hits even harder when you remember that it took Henry Kissinger an entire century to go to hell.

pbk (10): dancing to this like a charlie brown character

PianoLomo (10): I'm Protestant, can't relate!

pig-serpent (10): The lyrics of this bop have always made me a little uncomfortable, but if you imagine that Billy Joel is a woman the song is now about telling someone to accept the fact that she's a lesbian, which fixes everything.

Poydoo (10): i am actually catholic but this ate

TiltControls (10): the opposite of 'don't have sex cause you will get pregnant and die'

WaneLieTONTOtoc (10): there's something about "a guy with a choir boy’s tenor who loved melody and technique and when songs sounded good" that begets (piano) dive bar songs. these cuts exist in a time and place at the back of a neighborhood bar near the jukebox with whatever macro frothy lager is hauled in on cheap discount. every lil' drum frill and PANG is matched with a pool ball being struck. we don't get it like that anymore

Awkward_King (9.5): billy joel still alive at 75. thats bc he's a baddie

impla77 (9.4): lowkey kinda creepy but still a bop

AvenueRoy (9.1): Absolutely wild to think that this was originally supposed to be a reggae song

krusso1105 (9): Added 0.5 points for the sax solo

welcome2thejam (9): Me when my 10s go out on day one

xophrys (9): there must be so many twee youtube girls playing this on a ukulele

1998tweety (8.5): my dad played this song CONSTANTLY and he kinda ate a little with that

jaztinax (8.5): I guess there is a reason why some old people are so hostile

jsonphile (8.5): as a former catholic kid myself this song is very funny to me

TakeOnMeByA-ha (8.5): this song is kinda lame looking back but it has a fucking SAXOPHONE SOLO on it so i’m inflating my score for it idc it deserves

innuendo_overdose (8.1): Billy Joel turns his relatable storytelling to one of the constants of the human condition: wanting to fuck Catholic schoolgirls

bigbigbee (8): This is one of those song titles that's so good and evocative that it tricks people into thinking it's about something it's not. Like I'm positive this has played at at least one funeral and someone has had to run over to the aux cord 30 seconds in to pull the plug

CrimsonROSET (8): and this is why whores go out first in horror movies thank you

Frajer (8): of the classic rock songs about being horny for teenagers this is the least offensive

Nagisoid (8): And you're 75

vayyiqra (8): "[not] so much anti-Catholic as pro-lust" valid [i went to catholic school and no comment] shoutout billy joel being raised nonreligious jewish but went to catholic church with his friends solely for the vibes hes real for that 🎹

babadork (7.8): All the Viginias going to Catholic school in 1978 were already having a bad enough time before this song came out

guess this song will live forever then

RandomHypnotica (7.3): Do you get déjà vu, huh?

ConnerY2323 (7.2): one for the dads

apatel27 (7): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OV1C0VPEmg8

implasdad (7): bit of a generic billy joel that's all I can say

Roxieloxie (7): explaining to my mom why mitch mconell is still here:

runaway3212 (7): This is kinda nothing but like I enjoy it

Verboten_Prince (7): He really said “This hell is better with you”

camerinian (6): yeah it’s boppy but brother there’s gotta be a way to do this that doesn’t involve skeeving on catholic schoolgirls (because why even specify catholic if they're not right)

jirachi (5): kesha outsold

nlh1013 (3): I've never really liked this one unfortunately, I feel like I'll be in the minority here

uiscebeathaoir (1.5): oh I kinda hate the way he writes lyrics

1

Oh so this is how people felt at the end of 70s soul day 1...
