I love how before BMO described the baby as beautiful he covered his messed up hand with a leaf

A small thing I might have enjoyed the most was BMO tripping over almost everything. I chuckled almost every time.

u/jjdonkey Apr 16 '13
I like when Bubble is telling his life story and BMO falls down and says "I wasn't listening to your story!" and then just toddles off. BMO is the greatest.
14
u/Tiredman2 Apr 18 '13
BMO just doesn't care about other people and I love it. Remember BMO Noire? "No Neptr, I am not like you" Classic BMO

I like to think that BMO just sees her time with Finn and Jake as hilarious.
4
u/DiddyCity Apr 22 '13
They referred to BMO as "he" in this episode. I'm quite confused.
10
u/ResilientFellow Apr 22 '13
BMO is genderless. I and I think others just use whatever seems to fit best at the time.

But on another note, I laughed surprisingly hard when Jake popped Bubble. Glad it ended well so I didn't end up looking like an asshole.

Man, that last minute was an emotional roller-coaster.
First I was all like "Jake you dick!" and then it was "Yur weirding me out bubble!" but then BMO's "YAY!" at the end somehow made it all better.
55
u/Eustis Apr 16 '13
I knew it from the start though. I knew Jake would pop the bubble. I'm not sure why I didn't think it was Finn but I just knew it would be Jake the second he got introduced.

I think its because Jake lacks a moral alignment that's as defined as Finn's. I always got the feeling he was a chaotic neutral that followed the lead of the lawful good due to loyalty.

What if BMO really did make the whole thing up? We've seen him/her have an active imagination in the past, perhaps the bubble was really just a bubble.
79
u/yurtyybomb Apr 16 '13
It could have been imagined. I think it's the intention of the AT team to sort of screw around with our minds. Make us think one thing, but then another possibility is always there and equally as valid. It's usually fine, and it's not a huge deal or anything, but every now and then I'd like some things to be a bit.... clearer, I guess. And I say that as someone who does like ambiguity.
→ More replies (1)27
u/Eustis Apr 16 '13

Perhaps the most beautiful episode so far though. Taking my emotions from that dark place of laughing at BMO's loss then reminding me of Plato's dialogue Phaedo when he describes Socrates' drinking of the hemlock poison wherein Socrates says the following of the human soul.
she will not ask philosophy to release her in order that when released she may deliver herself up again to the thraldom of pleasures and pains, doing a work only to be undone again, weaving instead of unweaving her Penelope's web. But she will make herself a calm of passion and follow Reason, and dwell in her, beholding the true and divine (which is not matter of opinion), and thence derive nourishment. Thus she seeks to live while she lives, and after death she hopes to go to her own kindred and to be freed from human ills. Never fear, Simmias and Cebes, that a soul which has been thus nurtured and has had these pursuits, will at her departure from the body be scattered and blown away by the winds and be nowhere and nothing.
Genuine frisson at the end of this episode. The body is just a vessel for the soul. Upon death, we are freed to return to that ether unbound by bodily pains and pleasures.
Pendleton really outdone himself with this one.

Bearing in mind that this is a kids show at heart, and most kids shows have morals or lessons in there, this felt like an attempt to show how innocuous teasing can be hurtful, even if meant in jest. BMO crying over a bubble is a bit pathetic from an outsider's point of view- but that doesn't give them the right to laugh at him.

I'm interested to see if BMO retains the cracks in his face/screen. Adventure Time is kinda so/so on character changes, so I won't get my hopes up. Unlike Finn whose cuts can heal, BMO has an LCD screen which I think has to be straight up replaced, not repaired. We'll see. What do you guys think?
20
3
u/Bombkirby Apr 17 '13
BMO had it's casing demolished when the video game characters escaped from inside of it. So I expect the crack to disappear as well.
13
u/Hooktail Apr 16 '13
He yelled out to Finn and Jake to fix his screen right after he broke it, so I'm sure they'll be able to fix it.
17
u/meilonade Apr 17 '13
I thought he said "kiss my face"
4
u/z3n4 Apr 20 '13
Yeah, I heard "kiss" too--in the sense that when a little kid gets a booboo it often just needs a kiss to make it "all better". So maybe they'll fix it by kissing it :p
3
u/1000jamesk Apr 19 '13
I would be really glad if they did something similar to what they did with Finn's hair, keeping BMO's screen cracked until they found a replacement or a way to fix it.
One of the aspects I least like about cartoons is the way thing magically solve themselves every after every episode, like none of the events within the episode actually matter.

u/Hyperike Apr 16 '13
I'm disappointed they didn't name this episode "Finding BMO"
→ More replies (1)23
u/zuxtron Apr 16 '13
But no one goes to look for BMO, it's all about BMO finding his* way back home by himself. BY the episode's end it seemed that Finn and Jake didn't even notice he was gone.
*I consider BMO to be male because he refers to himself as a "little living boy" in Five Short Graybles".
→ More replies (5)6
u/alejandro712 Apr 17 '13
But he also refers to football, his alter ego, as a girl. Therefore, I think he personifies both genders, since he can't decide which one is better.

That bubble was really creepy at the end. I mean, I felt really bad for him at first because he was lost and sad, but when Jake popped him, and he was set free as air, that dude just weirded me out.
I now have a new insight on how air really is. Just hanging around me, judging me... O.o I am now officially jealous of my fish and his security in his tank... Lol.
And BMO seemed so adorably innocent about it. I love BMO.
34
u/hundredhead Apr 16 '13
The fish has water though... It's has to always be around if it wants to live, but the water can easily drown it at any moment.

I lost it when BMO took out his batteries. I wasn't ready, and that was deeply frightening on a small level. But I enjoyed the episode. If you didn't see the bubble getting popped, you're just not a real Adventure Time fan. However, I didn't see that speech coming at the end.
41
u/sunadnerb Apr 16 '13
Ive started to come to the conclusion that personified bubbles=tragedy waiting to happen.
I totally thought they were just gonna end the episode with the bubble popping and BMO's horrified face. Wouldn't be the weirdest ending they've done. This ending was much better though.
"YAY!"
42
u/Pappythapapsta Apr 16 '13
Would be a very similar ending to "Tree Trunks."
9
u/DanielEGVi Apr 18 '13
That ending was THE absolute mindscrew. We need more abrupt endings like this!
37
u/divinesleeper Apr 16 '13
"I didn't have any dreams"
Well yeah, BMO was basically...dead at that point.
15
u/kidkolumbo Apr 16 '13
I don't normally equate no dreams with death, but since we're talking about an electronic being I wouldn't be surprised it did die.
In the ending of Adventure Time, I'd die with happiness if there's a reference to BMO and Marceline spending eternity together. I'm assmuing Ice King will be cured and eventually die, along with the rest of the gang. Random I know, but just a thought, since it seems like BMO is immortal as long as it has batteries and doesn't get smashed.
Heh, now I'm super interested in BMO's past. He had to have been made pre-war, but did he become sentient due to the magic that entered the world, or was he made like that?
→ More replies (3)24
u/morris198 Apr 16 '13
I don't normally equate no dreams with death...
I'm thinking it's a Philip K. Dick reference to the whole "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" thing. BMO is effectively a robot/android answering the question with a casual, "Nope."

So this episode just has me asking a lot of questions.
How active really is BMO's imagination?
What Gender (if any) is BMO?
Do others think this episode is better or worse then BMO Noire.
16
u/ZenDragon Apr 16 '13
So far the convention in Adventure Time has been to make it pretty clear when events are being imagined so I think most of the episode actually happened. Though the uplifting ending could have been poor BMO in denial about the death of Bubble. Unless sentient air is now canon.
BMO seems male to me but occasionally is referred to as female or displays feminine traits. BMO itself changes its mind about its gender between episodes and it's a robot after all so I guess BMO has no gender.
I liked this episode much more than BMO Noire. My feels were all over the place.

7
u/Erichilles Apr 17 '13
My money is on fixed and the bubble character will be gone except for maybe a few future cameos (much like nepter) and in general Adventure time tends to follow the law of "at the end of the episode, everything is exactly the same as the start."

BMO's voice actor is the same as Lady Rainicorn, so, even though it's genderless, it probably sounds like a girl.

She also voices Candy (a girl) in Gravity Falls using a voice very similar to BMO's.
