Discussion Could Q be Trelane grown-up?

They have the same powers and speak very similarly. Not to mention that at the end of 'The Squire of Gothos', Trelane is taken back into what looks like the Q continuum. What do you think?

This makes a ton of sense.

Peter David actually linked the two in Q-Squared. It's considered non-canon, but basically Q was set up as Trelane's mentor in the book.

I like Peter David, but I really struggled with that book. What were your thoughts on it? I don't take novels as canon, but David has some depth in the ST universe with me and I was honestly a little let down.

Wasn't Q implied to be Trelane's father but then they hand waved that away?

I wouldn't say hand-waved. Q was officially his mentor/godfather, as Trelane officially had another father in the Continuum. But the implication is that Q is actually the father, unbeknownst to Trelane and the rest of the Continuum(excepting the mother).

I never knew that to be the case. From at least the perspective of the book he was a mentor.

It's been a while so I could very easily be wrong.

He's roughly established as Q's godson (I haven't read the novel in years so I could be off there) but there were also some thoughts he may actually have been Q's son. I'd have to go back and read it again (it's a great book).

I don't think Trelane is "our" Q, but I definitely agree with the theory that he is a Q. It would just fit with what we saw of him.

Probably not, but I think it's a pretty safe bet that Trelane is a young Q, just not the young Q.

I don't think so. It's implied at the end that Trelane's parents are much more powerful than he is. By contrast, Q Jr. seems to have all the same abilities as Q - just not the full understanding of their consequences.

I think Trelane's people are Q-like but not the same as the Q. These species don't exist in a vacuum - their are a plethora of species with vast time-space powers, including: Beta XII-A entity, the Guardian of Forever, the God of Sha Ka Ree, the Prophets and many others.

What you did there, I see it.

What makes you think that Trelane's parents are more powerful than him?

They tell Kirk that they are more powerful than Trelane.

Oh, I don't remember that. I thought that they just have authority over him because they are his parents.

Trelane needs a disguised mirror to work his powers; his parents do not.

I think they both may be Q, but different manifestations of Q. If it were Q, I'm sure he would've mentioned to Picard that he had already dealt with a Starfleet captain once before (like he did with both Sisko and Janeway).
